Never good to see a bike shop close down.
Its odd, a quick calculation says I have been to well over 30 bikeshops in NZ, from MotoSouth in Invercargill to Shaws in Whangarei, and yet I had never been into Phil Turnbulls - and its just up the road in Palmy. Go figure.

hey team pauly here.yes the shop is closed at this point there is someone intrested in buying the place tho. so dont panic just yet.if the shop is bought the prospective buyer has said he wants to retain the same staff as before so with a bit of luck and a sprinkling of fairy dust we could well be back in action soonish. will keep you updated as i know more. thanks again for the support from you guys:yes:

Sign of the times. How often on this site do you read bought this off the net, saved shitloads.Harsh reality of business (cars and bike franchises)these days, the bikes/cars not selling so the business rely on service and accesories to help turnover, internet and extra competition means hard to survive.

Waikato has lost two shops in as many months, and a few looking shaky.
One door shuts, another opens. Tis the way it goes.

unbelievable to hear when motorcycling should be a boom with fuel prices and high dairy products, but after having worked in bikeshops most of my adult life although not for the last 5 years,it always ceased to amaze me that joe public always thought thier local bike shops were ripping the pants off them in profit hand over foot, which in fact is quite the opposite

I know what you mean. I have a friend who claims that the local dealer (5 star, hope you dont mine me nameing) rips them off 'so bad' but yet i have recived bloddy good deals and as good service. So i will continue to go to 5star (and show loyalty) and i fully, 100% recomend them.

Dam shame really, they had a good range of bikes and accessories. They recently extended thier showroom as well and it was looking blardy awesome, but i know from personal experience how much of a hit moving or extensions can have on any business. It can take a long time to recoup the money spent. So lets hope they reopen the shop and give some of thier old employees thier income back again

That's a real shame, I got most of my Yam & Suzi parts from there in the past (haven't needed much lately) but would far rather give money for decent service than to local dealers of those Marques (well Yam moved some while ago, but I will always return where I get good service).
Paul pass on my sympathies to David. Hope it gets back up & running & or the staff can find more work soon.
Maybe Phil would consider coming out of retirement & buying it back? Seemed like a genuine guy.

Having worked in the retail bike trade as a supplier for the last couple of years I can assure you - loads of the guys that run these shops are in it for the passion and seem to be afraid to make too much money from their clients. Sure there are a few unabashed profiteers out there but slim margins and high overheads make it tough going.
Really sorry to hear about Turnbulls closing and best of luck to all of the guys.
Palmy needs you all in the industry!

Hi Paul,
It was a huge shock when I initially heard the news.
My first thoughts were of you guys, and how you couldn't even go in to retrieve your coffee mug!
It's good somebody is looking at buying the place... really good.
Shame the "Good Will" might be a little shot to pieces... well, it will be unless the customers who have been adversely affected can be assured they get their bikes/ kit etc back with little hiccups....
Anyhow, hope you get back to work soonest... and I can pop in and catch up sometime.
It is amazing how people shoot from the hip when they don't know all the facts though eh?

That is true....
Very true.
I can tell you though the people of Palmy are actually crap at supporting their local businesses.
This is a bit of a broad brush, but many are okay with looking around Palmy, then heading a couple of hours in any direction and getting a better deal!
Then expect help from the local shop!
This isn't really aimed at just motorcyclists, and not taking a dig at you Wellingtonians at pushing a sale to the people of Palmy, just an observation that seems to happen a lot! With all sorts of things....
I guess it is called compitition though...
I must admit I did get my bike from another district, but will always take it to the same guys for maintenance (that I can't do, or don't have time to do), and support the locals first.... Shame said shop is closed at the moment....

Am I correct in thinking that Phil Turnbulls was sold in 06 to someone else and at the time there was a discussion about whether he should have left his name on the building?
I bet he regrets it now, that kind of mud sticks.

One more reason to support the local shops is that they quite often sponsor, or are otherwise involved in local sports or social events. The guy on the other end of the great WWW doesn't give a damn about your country/city/town, and no-one is supporting the local economy.
Then again there is such a thing as outrageous profit margins which local businesses have to watch out for...

There was an ad in yesterday's Dominion Post for a liquidation auction onsite at Phil Turnbull Motorcycles on September 6 at 10am.
Auction includes used motorcycles and quad bikes, company utes, workshop tools and equipment, motorcycle parts and tyres, plus retail stock, clothing, helmets and accessories.
For details contact auctioneer: Todd Foster (06) 835-7772 or 021-510-097. www.maidensandfoster.co.nz

The one time I went there (years ago) the staff at the shop were extremely helpful and appear to have a considerable amount of collective experience. I wish them all the best.

It's true that we can often make a short-term saving buying over the Internet. But I think more often, if the local and national franchise "at home" was interested in ordering a one-off part or providing good after sales service, we wouldn't be looking overseas or on eBay.
Worse still, some local franchise people are discouraging to the point of being hostile when we first make enquiries about a new model / product; even expect us to put our money down in full on a bike which isn't even physically present.
This encourages us to be more likely to choose offshore providers in the future. After all, under these circumstances it's not as if buying locally would get us the good after-sales service / warranty support etc we won't get from buying internationally...

Attached is a PDF of the items for sale at the auction next Saturday (6th Sept) onsite at Turnbulls at 10am.
General pictures are available here (http://www.maidensandfoster.co.nz/Auction-Input/special-auction-photographs.doc). Wow there is a lot of stock
It's quite sad looking at the photos....the end of an era :weep:
Let's hope at least that everying sells for decent prices.

Just thought you may like to know this before you plan on heading up for the auction on Saturday. Andy rang the auctioneer earlier today as his boss was interested in buying a jacket for his wife, so he wanted to know if individual items were being sold or whether it would all be in lots. The auctioneer said there was so much stuff that it would all be sold in lots - and said for example tyres would be grouped in similar sizes, and would be sold in lots of no less than six tyres, but more likely lots of 10 or more. Jackets, helmets, etc would be sold the same way.
So if you are after a few bargains, be aware you'll have to buy several items and then try and onsell the rest. And don't forget the 10% buyer's premium on top of what price the auction reaches.

Yes, can't remember who I was discussing this with but they felt this is the way the auction would go due to the amount of kit to go on the block. Looks like they were bang on the money, speaking of which, looks like i'll need more money than I have to spare to get any kit now.

Official word from the auctioneers:
The merchandise will be offered in lots/groups of similar items. Sorry I can't confirm how large the lots will be until Friday, but must stress that due to the quantity involved the Lots will be larger. I expect that this will cater more to speculators & trade than private individuals. i.e.. 4 x Motorcycle jackets same brand/style various sizes: 1 Lot. 4 x Helmets same value/various sizes: 1 Lot, Box Lot Various goggles & Gloves.etc
We may offer some identical lots with the option of more, but can only do this when they are identical.
As much as we wish to do the best (turnover) for the liquidation, we must sell & have dispersed all items to clear the premises.
So the auction is going to mostly be of interest to retailers I guess, as even if a group of people got together, the groupings of sizes etc might not suit.
Bummer, I would like a few things too but not in a position to buy a bunch of stuff just for the one or two items I want. Although note the auctioneers say there is no reserve so you never know....
A shame, but can see why when you see in the photos how much stuff there is. It would be a week long auction otherwise.
I've been to a couple of auctions before where they had multiples of many items. They would auction one, and then offer the rest to anyone else at the same price and you just held up your bidder card if you wanted one. Guess that wouldn't work too well with sized pants/jackets/boots/helmets etc.....

The same reason i can not afford to get anything there (sigh)
If anybody ends up with a shitload of tank bags (or tail bags better) if i could get one it would be swell :) If it is say a lot of 5 i will pay 1/5 of the TOTAL cost (ie bid and premium), shipping and 20 bucks for ya troble. (as long as it isnt toooo exspencive ie over 150-180 bucks.
