Hey guys,

i hope someone can help..

I've got a 1978 XS 250 i'm tarting up and I have a few questions i hope someone can point me in the right direction..

First one.. I have the frame all stripped back to bare bones, but, the condensor hangs off a lug on the top of the frame..
The condensor is secured on there with one bolt that screws into a captive nut on the back of the lug, and it was being a complete bitch..

I used some stud extractors and the head of the bolt snapped off.. i started to drill the remaining bit of bolt out, but after all my hammering and banging at it previously, the pressure of me drilling snapped off the lug from the frame..

Now, as i said, it just holds the condensor in place.. a job that could be done admirably with a few metres of insulating tape.. but I wonder if this will be a problem when i comes to getting the bike re-registered..

I'm hoping i can just get it welded back on to the frame without any hassles..
or do i now have a frame that is useless..
Would hope not.. its not like its bearing any kind of load..

Also, does anyone know where I can get all my chrome bits rechromed..
somewhere in the Wairarapa would be good, but Welly or Palmy North would do the trick too..

Another thing is the forks.. there is a little bit of pitting on them , but it looks to be a fair way up the fork and in no danger of ever getting down as far as the seals.. will this be an automatic failure of a WOF.. or of the re-registration process..??

thanks for your time.

CB..

Seriously get a quote before chroming, and shop around, you will faint at the cost. Spray paint silver is a good cheap option.

As to the lug, someone can weld it on and no one will be any the wiser so it should not affect wof or registration. It is not load bearing and does not affect the integrity of the frame. My opinion anyway. Next time try using an 'easy out', cheap to buy and they are great to extract stubburn bolts/screws that have snapped.

See if you can polish the pitting out on the forks with some chrome polish.

Good luck with the project

I don't think fork pitting is an automatic fail over here, not like getting an MOT. Especially if it's up out of the range of fork travel.

If you're really fussed, you could always fit some fork gaiters, then the bastards can't even see the forks.

Sounds like you're having fun... any light engineering place can do the welding.Wont cost much(about $20.00)
Overnight couriers to crome shops is another option, bigger business's in bigger citys can do it cheaper. Even plus courier cost it "may" work out cheaper.
Pitting is not a problem re. WOF, leaking seals are.
The big question is, will it be worth spending all the money on it ???
I would suggest ,just make it TIDY and LEGAL. Save the money for your next BIGGER / NEWER bike...
