Little tiny country.

Only spends money on oval ball sports.

Why are you surprised or disappointed?

Dont worry.
We only medal in rowing/sailing at the moment.
With the very occassional one somewhere else.

Eg, Queen B, Valeri Vili, Nick Willis, Bevan Docherty. (this year those are our outsiders i reckon)

Previous years - Carter, Ulmer etc

But traditionally it is the second half of the olympics we pick up the odd medal.

First medals are Shooting, Gym and swimming - and we are NOT strong there.

so wait and we should get a few, a couple might be gold if we are lucky.

You will find that the SPARC contribution to oval ball sports is a lot less than other sports. Rowers/sailors/equestrian etc etc are reasonably well funded and have been training/competing overseas regularly.

It is disappointing when athletes have time to prepare and peak and then perform below thir best.

Thumbs up to Burmeister for the guts to take on the big guns and give it a go!!!

Oval ball sports are professional enterprises and there is NO comparison in the amount of revenue handled by the NZRU and SPARC. SPARC doesn't even come vaguely close to covering living expenses for our athletes. Compared to any other "Western" country our lot are resolutely amateur in comparison, and most of them have lives and jobs to hold down.

A large number of our premier athletes appear to have been a little bit stupid in the days leading up to their events and have developed "stomach upsets". Bring food from home. Eat only the stuff you prepare for yourself.

Yip, not hard to work that out, or find a pizza place, dont eat the local shit, it will give you the squirts if you are not use to it. Thier food is nothing like the take aways you get here.......no its worse!

I noticed on stuff today, when I checked out the medal table they had listed us as Australia/New Zealand. Maybe they're just trying to make us look better! But I also kinda think that it sucks. We are NZ, we're a small country with a lot less competitors than most countries so we were never gonna win too many medals anyway!

The only way NZ will win medals is if they start handing them out for "participation" like they do at school nowadays

I saw the Aussies posting a 'medals per capita' chart - ferk, with our population winning even a single medal would be pretty good!

Olympics? What a crock 'o shit. No one gives a ferk unless you win. You've gotta have a $1500 set of togs or a $30 000 bike just to be in the race....christ knows what a decent pharmacist is worth these days.

Don't get me started on the people "disappeared" for objecting to a stadium being built where their house, bear bile farming etc etc.

Fuck 'em all and turn the damn TV off.

I'm sure they're not that stupid. Remember they're athletes not tourists, their nutritional requirements will be finely tuned to maximise performance and to peak at the right time so experimentation isn't an option. From what I heard the food at the Olympic Village is very good with athletes only needing to bring supplements.

There are many ways to get stomach bugs other than through eating i.e. Swimming/sailing/kayaking in dirty water, walking barefoot, brushing teeth with tap water.

Yep Kiwi's suck on a new level here.
On the upside the competition between the other countries is awesome. Not a single event i have seen so far (with exception of Phelps) has been a whitewash.
However to clear up a few negatives in this thread.
- Dont judge china until you have been there, as the whole of NZ fits in 1 suburb in Shanghai. Percentage wise they aren't doing too bad.

- Tibet is being ruled by "Maoist - Mao Extremists" not chinese (as a whole). Thats kinda like saying Kiwis are all thieving wankers because we all come from south Auckland. Middle-east is full of suicide bombers. USA is full of the un-intelligent.

- Its a whole different system over there, if you dont like it, dont go there......but when did they throw mud here?

Who cares about the medal count.
My favourite sport to watch was just on.
Female Olympic diving comp.
Where else do watch women pose for seconds on a high board, in tight one piece togs. Twist/roll their bodies as they plummet down wards, exit from the pool dripping wet, then shower right in front of you.
Every second is gold in my books.:msn-wink:

Odd. I always had precisely the opposite experience in China. Wonderful local food. Cheap, fresh, delicious. Not slithery piles of tasteless greaseballs like the 'Chinese' food we get here.

I caught campy from eating sushi at a mall at one point, but that was just me being a dumbfuck and forgetting the basic principle that every Chinese chef has hands covered in bacteria which will die on hot food but survive to kill you on anything raw.

IMHO, in China, so long as you eat stuff that's steaming hot straight out of a kitchen or sealed from a supermarket you're sweet.

Oh, and go Hayden Roulston!

Fookin neow!

Yeah nice to blitz the Aussies but you must be on a different planet if you think we would EVER beat them - not going to happen.

Anyways ... it's NOT about medals, that's what's wrong with the whole psyche behind NZ olympic coverage. We have people who have done a PB, broken NZ records and other really significant shit ... give them some kudos FFS, they've earned it

Actually the Chinese didn't change the name and most Chinese don't know that outside their capital city experienced a name change. Peking was a British translation of the name but after 1949 China adopted a more correct version = Bejing and in the 1980s the West adopted it.
