Hi, I'm interested in DR650s with bigger than stock fuel tanks fitted. Anybody in Auckland have a DR650 with an oversize tank fitted that is free for a wee while today? Would be interested to take a look at the bike to see what the bike looks like. Cheers. Patrick. Going to bed now. Will check in the morning.

IMS do a 18l tank. Transalper has one - see install pics here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=52087&highlight=dr650+ims). I also had one on my old DR - see for sale pics here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=77672&highlight=dr650+ims).
Alternatively there is the Safari Aqualine 32l tank. See pics of Far Queue's here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=76993&d=1195366135).

Hi pudding. Heres a pic of my bike with the 18lt IMS tank on. With a 14 tooth front sprocket I get about 280kms. With the 15 tooth, I get about 340kms. Much better than the poxy 175km out of the dumb standard tin tank. Tires are dunlop D606, perfect for gravel and fire breaks and surprisingly grippy on the seal. They just wont last long I reckon. But I don't care, they are worth the fun of drifting and digging farrows in the gravel roads.

Maybe I tend to thrash the bugger a bit. I find that when riding on gravel my rear wheel spends a lot of time spinning out of corners. Im probably getting good distance if I rode unlike a man possessed...... perhaps Ill try someday?

What is with the DR speedometer,143 kmh indicated = 130 kmh on the GPS with stock gearing.
The 18 litre IMS is probably the go for back home ?

You'll find that GPS reads every 2 or 3 seconds and is a point to point calculation via satellite. GPS doesn't allow for corners or undulations in the road either. And odometers are seldom completely accurate anyway so if you're getting the same on both it'd be a miracle... but at that speed wouldn't be more keen on watching the raod anyway?

That does appear a bit more out than I would expect. Mine is a 2006 reg K5 model, 173 on the clock is 163 on gps. It was a road tyre so expect a knob would read even more accurate having a higher profile. Gearing will make no difference to indicated speed but may affect actual top speed. Standard it looks like they are geared for an impossible 186kph at max revs. Drop to a 14 tooth front for a more achievable 173-177??Kph (real not indicated). Unless you intend to travel at a constant 130 kph the standard gearing is to tall. Are they a fun bike or what tho!

Just not long changed the gearing from 15/41 standard , to 14/43.
the bike ran fine at this gearing but round town it was reving to high for 3rd gear and to low to use 4th gear .
i have now changed the front sprocket back to a 15 tooth and now the final gearing is 15/43.
this seems to far better over the 14 front sprocket .
now round town is a third gear down to 2nd at times ride .
i can still use 4 th gear at 60 km and its fine up to 90, top from 90 km .
Has anyone else found this to be better than the 14 / 43 that most change to .

Most people just change from the stock 15/41 to 14/41 till the original chain and rear sprocket wear out. After that 15/43 with the option of 14/43 seems to be a good compromise on ratios and chain/sprocket wear.
Transalper and I (when I had my DR) really liked the 15/43 ratio for adv riding from slower speed trails to road running. Nordie in Nelson likes the 14/43 ratio but he does a lot more hill work and less 1+ hour runs along straight highways. I'm not sure where you are based but if you have to do much highway running I'd be using the 15/43 ratio most of the time and if you are going to do any knarly stuff chuck the 14 front on. There is a 13 tooth front that can be made to fit for the extremely knarly stuff but you will probably be wanting a 250 at that point. Get in touch with Far Queue about the 13 tooth if you are interested in one.

I havn't checked it against the GPS but maybe the speedometer reads high with the (low profile) Trailwings to allow for higher profile full knobby tyres.
Edit- Just spotted GaZBur's post,exactly..... I spent a good deal of yesterday running the D606's at 130kmh + except for some (constant) weaving on the return leg (only) they seem like a good tyre.

Is that Cahills crossing?
How deep and fast was it?
What is it that you have circled in the second photo
When we were there (if it is Cahills), the water was dropping off the downstream side of the cause way and we weren't game to cross. In your photos, there is no downstream step, so it must be quite a bit deeper. If you rode through there, I take my hat off to you.

Yes,Cahill Crossing on the Arnhem Land side.
The step was there when i went across in the morning.
I waited a half hour after taking that pic on the return, the water was about where the rocks are by the guy fishing when i crossed, maybe a foot and a half deep in the middle (my pants were wet mid shin :bye:) and reasonable flow with no sign of the step.
There is a rough bit close to the other side but nothing of to much concern,i spotted a 4WD going over it so knew it was there.
The red circle if you look closely will show the head of a crocodile.
It looks like the Wet season is close now with humidity starting to climb.

See, that's what I can't figure out.
If it's lower than when we were there because it's tidal, then how come the downstream "step" isn't showing? Surely that only disappears when the tide backs it up and raises the level.
What am I missing here?

When the tide backs up it will fill in the step, if its high enough tide, period.
The 'flow' is a seperate issue. There could be no flow and still the tide could fill in to the causeway......picture the Manakau where you drive over it each day....there is no flow in at that point, but still high tide will fill up to whatever the high tide mark is at that point, right?
The pix just seemed to show a much lower river than we saw...admittedly its taken from the Oenpelli side, but the depth guages should match each other?

Being a shorty (5'/8"/9") the screen seems to line up with my Arai XD3's peek nicely angle wise so it seems to work well even at the 130 kmh speed limit.

I imagine it will be a case of playing with the angle and see what happens. what I like about the screen is the width and the tint. Some just look to big and bulky so don't suit the bike. I commute every day rain or shine so a bit of protection from the weather would be good as well.

Actually, that road gave me a few minor pucker moments.
The straights and wider bends were in good order when we went through there, but the surface in some of the tighter corners had deteriorated badly. It meant that I was going rather faster than I was comfortable with when I hit some of those corners and it was "hang on and hope".
This seemed to be a pretty common situation in Oz where the 4WD's cut up the tighter corners pretty thoroughly, but it was a lesson that I just never seemed to learn.
The DR saved my stupid arse more than once.

Pity the exchange rate has dropped over 30 cents,DR 650 Corbin is AU$722.
That was 875kms on the stock seat and suspension.  so look forward to some comfort, have a Corbin on the TL back home, they are good.

The times were crap this year despite the bike being slightly faster the very strong head winds pushed my times a full second slower than the 13.880 I got last year. So 13.880 it is still better that the 14.836 i did this year, first time they ran Nth to Sth too!

The mags are off a GSXR250. I use Dunlop 501's 110/70-17 front and 150/70-17 rear. The mags were not trivial to set up - had to get an engineering firm to sort them for me. GJS engineers in Dunedin. All up though including buying second hand mags it was under $700 plus the cost of tyres. Now its set up with disks and sprockets attached to each set of wheels so changing to knobblies takes about half hour.

Now that sounds like a good plan ...... a set of mags and road tyres so I can have the little KLX be a motard during the week and then quickly wack on some wheels with knobblies for weekend adv/offroad fun!!!! That cost doesn't sound too outrageous - do you reckon that's typical to get set up for a spare set of wheels?

It depends mostly on axle diameters. If you can match those up spacers are not too big a problem. You can get bearings with different internal and external diameters to fit into the mags so the axle stays the same or you can go the other way and adapt an axle.
I got the mags from a wreck - about $200 incuding all the attached disks, sprocket and axle spacers.
Got the engineering company to quote me for fitting with new sprocket and machined down front disk 300mm to 290mm so I could just pull the wheels on and off without doing any adjusting to brakes. Only thing I dont have is a speedo but that could be easily fixed and will be when I get a spare $200 fro a Trail Tech Vapor.
They quoted and charged me $480 for thier work but admitted if they knew what an absolute bastard machining floating disks were it probably would have been $100 more on the quote. I can recommend GJS engineering in Dunedin as they know and do a lot of bike work and were good to me.
With the DR you just drop the rear shock to the lower mount hole and leave the front as is as the 17in drops the front quite a bit. You will notice a huge improvement in handling on the street with the smaller front! You will be amazed how well they handle after conversion even with stock shocks etc.

Good luck Nathan, safe riding & post your progress on KB if you can.

Hi XF650,
The Maungatapu track you pointed me too was a great ride. A little sketchy in parts on a fully loaded bike, but that just adds to the fun.
I'm now in Wellington searching for a new helmet today. I left my helmet on my bike at Farewell Spit and the wind blew my bike over crushing my faithful old Arai. :( Luckily, the DR didn't get damaged.
Since this is a DR thread, I'd better talk about my bike. Farkles include a Sarari tank, B&B bash plate, Moose Racing hand guards, and Suzuki rear rack. The engine is completely stock and I'm running stock Trailwing tyres. I opted for soft luggage since hard panniers just add too much weight in my opinion and I'm paranoid about them breaking my leg in a bad situation. So far the bike has been utterly reliable and always starts easily even when it's cold. The only real complaints I have is the overly-high first gear and the uncomfortable seat.
After doing a couple of quite gnarly DoC 4WD tracks, I'm convinced that smaller, single-cylinder bikes are the way to go. I've had so many occasions where a fall was saved by sticking my leg out, which just isn't really an option with the bigger bikes. And it's nice to be able to lift your bike (see pic ).

my experience as well - having wrestled with an 1150GS previously - I now reserve the Beemer for gravel road rides - even a DR650 is relatively heavy compared to some of the smaller bikes like the DR350 I owned previously - 'she's a hrad thing to get the perfect bike eh?' - Cheers S

Only 385 kms today.
The first tank it seems was mixed incorrectly and cracked up (multiple). (QC ?)
The replacement tank had a obvious defect which was smoothed over where it leaked within three weeks and 2000 kms. (QC ?)
The jacket was defective (0 waterproofing) but it was the dry season when i got it,i have ben told to send it back to the USA. (QC ?)
The Ohlins was defective when i received it. (QC ?)

Put a coil spring around it (much like you see on some brake hoses). If the spring is a little larger than the hose it will hold the hose away from whatever is making it hot and the air gap will keep the hose a bit cooler.

The above pic is before i removed the carb and turned the inlet pipe to a flatter angle so reserve is useable and repositioned the hose clamp .
Without the hose you need to watch out that for the band clamps on the carburetor inlet digging into the stock hose,i turned them anyway and use small zip ties to hold the fuel line in place.
I would also remove the two metal brackets that secure the cables and wiring at the steering head (now secured by big zip ties) those brackets will dig into the foam cushion on the Safari tank when it sags.
I would also keep and eye on the alloy bar where it rests on the cylinder head, the insulation will not last long before it starts to wear on the head and induce more vibration.
Do I detect a Corbin seat there now?
Is there any special reason for chucking the side covers?
Indeed,Corbin was AU$722.
I never got round to refitting the side covers after fitting the Ohlins, the exhaust might get a little more cooling flow but will put them back on when using pannier bags.

Hi Bass
what gearing are you running, and what sort of range are you making on a tank.
Standard 15/42 ? on road. Not certain if current rear is 42 or 43
Modified 13/42 off road. Circlips only on countershaft - no locking plate. So front sprocket change is about 5 minutes and I can still run a riveted chain.
The range is the surprising one.
Provided that I can get out of first gear, the range is around 700km regardless of the terrain.

More wear on the swingarm chain slider?
I may go to a 13t and keep the 525 chain instead of 14/16-46 in 520.

Haven't noticed any difference on the slider but then I haven't looked.
Jamie summed it up when he said that a 13T on the front gave a very nice set of ratios and what it needed then was a 6th gear for highway cruising.
IMHO it works really well in the rough stuff but effectively limits you to about 120 kph tops on the road. It will go faster but the revs are getting up there and the fuel economy disappears.

the new mounting point is behind the oil cooler, on to the frame.

the foam is to help protect the tank where the brace is close to bottom of tank.

i had a crap vibration all weekend, couldnt go over 110kms
so hopefully the new tank mount will help the prob.

Yep had to unfortunately. As much as I would've loved to have kept it and turned it into a full-on dirt bike, just can't afford to keep two bikes at the mo. I'll miss it actually and will remember it fondly as my first offroad bike for sure! Hey it helped me meet you lot of degenerates so it couldn't have been half bad!

16klms a litre i would think that would be average for the 650 but if youv'e done the jets and associated mods that sounds about right.

My set up is 14/43 (fitted 14 engine sprocket around 2.5k) at 9k despite Scott Olier and chain maintaining its adjustment - engine sprocket is hooked (read needing replacement along with rear sprocket and chain)

Thats normal. Theres only 1/3 of the teeth taking the same load so you would expect to replace 3 front sprockets to 1 rear. Dont let the front get too worn or it will wear the chain prematurely

I was surprised y'day at just how tall 1st gear is with the 15T after what I have been used to and no engine braking to speak of too! I'm seriously considering going down to a 14T after yesterdays outing!
When you went 15T stock down to the 14T, how much do you think your top end speed changed? Any noticeable difference for you when cruising at motorway speeds 100-110kph?

re the engine braking - your bike seemed slow to return to idle which makes downhill engine braking worse. Is there some 'emissions' slow return to idle on a dr650 or am I just used to the whiplash fast response of a klr??
also yesterday was my first ride going from a stock 15T to a 16T. What a great difference on road 4000=100kph 5000=120kph and it didnt seem any worse off road (rekluse clutch hides this by slipping)

i lost around 15-20km road speed, droping to the 14 front.
it has incresed engine brakeing to a point,
paladin will have to learn feathering both brakes and clutch at same time, for the steeper section, as not to stall the bike, or end up with a runaway.....:eek5:
like the last section before the locked gate, was steep and lose, very easy for front to let go ...
earlyer on with me haveing the 15 up front, i stalled a lot, and was a little tricky steep down hills...
or maybe 15/43-44 or some thing like that,, nordieboy whats your thoughts.....

I've got really good engine braking.
I run the 43 rear and swap between the 14 and 15t front.
If I know it's going to be steep/gnarly the 14 goes on and it'll still cruise fine. Otherwise the 15t front is on during the week and for normal gravel roadie and trail stuff.
2up I go for the 14t.
14/41 at 100kph = 4500rpm (max 173kph)
15/41 at 100kph = 4200rpm (max 186kph)
14/43 at 100kph = 4700rpm (max 165kph)
15/43 at 100kph = 4400rpm (max 177kph)

I think if you managed to touch the DR down on stock wheels and D606's it would get ugly very quickly.
I have gone back to Plan A,shouldn't have wasted NZ500 on springs and emulators plus freight and tax here.
Hopefully these will clear the tank and might only need .46 springs and a little damping work,at least if they fit they will be adjustable.

No flatside yet - have softer tyres now and they are wearing better due to less sliding. Dunlop GPRa10's 110 front and 150 rear. Am back on full knobs now as I was on an adventure ride weekend with the OMCC to the Brass Monkey working bee. One other DR650 there too, sorry no photos as I was at the back, covered in dust. Whole day on gravel roads, either dual purpose tyres are better on gravel or I am just a pussy on the loose stuff! Will find out how much of a pussy this weekend at the OMCC Gravel Hill climb. Guess I will have to harden up a bit. Only scrape one side at a time and only one bin this year so far - on the road and at an embarassingly slow speed.

It is the same suspension package you and Jamie purchased.
I was never told it had been sent so it was sitting in customs in Brisbane and came close to being returned to sender by 3 days.
My postal address was not on the package so could not be sent the paperwork/contacted. (i had made it clear regards the PO Box)
Payed $90 for tracking post but was not told the tracking number yet there was time to be posting on KB (archive post tracking) the day it was put in the post.
It was only an inquiry to see how it was coming along that alerted me that it had been posted weeks earlier.
It took another 4 days for the tracking info to be sent, without it i could do nothing because it also was the package ID.
The value on the customs docket had been inflated (why ?) over the actual cost so i got reamed on duty/GST,the shock had 2 turns of bubble wrap and was in what was basically a paper bag.
It came with no build spec sheet.
When i finally got the package, the race tech springs and emulators were simple over the counter items which i could have got from the US for a lot less and done via their online spring rate calculator(exchange rate was over 90 cents AU to the US$)
There was no set up info which is why i went this route after all the hype on KB.
The Ohlins shock was defective and would have been when sent,i had it regassed at my own expense,it leaked out within 2 days.
I was then told to send it to the Ohlins agent in Victoria over 3000 kms away.
Wait for it i had to pay the cost to send it  ie NZ$100 for the regas and post. (fully insured with tracking for obvious reasons)
Lucky for me the return post and repair was not charged to me.
I had taken the time to wrap the shock in cardboard then bubble warp, then put it in a box with packing so there was no chance of damage.
On its return the shock had been jammed into the corner of the same box and all of the packing used to push it into that corner.
The box looked like it had been dragged behind a car and did the shock no favours.
All in all it cost me over NZ$2700 for a old model shock, fork springs and emulators.
As you might have, the shock is borderline unless you are carrying a major load, for dayly riding it is bone jarring and the damping way off.
The set up info repeatedly asked for,the point of the whole exercise was never supplied, all i got in the end was a sorry that must have been a nightmare for you.
All in all it is something i try to forget about but am reminded every time i ride the bike (my only transport bar the treadly)
$hit happens.
The end.
There is little i can do about the shock,it was so expensive it can not be on sold,i would be lucky to get half what it cost.
I will set this RMZ450 front end up myself with any parts needed coming from the US,the shock i will live with,it would be to much of a hassle to keep swapping springs even if that worked. :third: maybe i could put a bag of cement on the back for around town.

The good news is it is the dry season now so it is around 32C every day with low humidity.
A new chain and sprockets go on the DR Monday then a good going over for a extended ride starting in a couple of weeks, parts unknown but starting with coming down the gulf into Borroloola then Mt Isa south.

Jamie and Neil passed through in the middle of the dry season, here is an idea between the two.
Daily temperatures are always over 30C year round getting to the high 30's
Humidity is the difference which gets up to 90%+ and rain.
No rain for over 160 days last dry season.
Here is the same spot, there is a water crossing just before but it is gone now, this is a public road and almost single track over the hill.

Hey TLD, pity you didn't ask me bout Ohlins and the folk you delt with before you purchased....I would have saved you a bomb!!
The WP, stock on the KT, are far better....I have never had a satisfactory experience with an Ohlins. Had 3. Slow learner.
Wifey and I will be up your way in late June, I am working down in WA, place called Moora at the moment, will be outta here early June and headded north.
Be good to catch up again after a year!
Jamie.
Neil, that whole episode was crap from the time i payed a NZ$2200 deposit site unseen to the time i finally received it last year.
It is the same suspension package you and Jamie purchased.
.
I am sorry to hear all this.
If you got the same package as us, then yes, it is an arse cruncher without quite a heavy load on the back of the bike.
Since I got home, I have never had that much load on the bike again - not even close - so I finally saw sense and fitted the standard spring to the Ohlins shock.
What a difference! I had to open the spring up about 0.5mm with a die grinder to make it fit but it only took about 5 minutes.
These days, I go looking for the holes and corrugations just for the grin factor.
Because the spring rate is lower, you need to back off the rebound damping and increase the compression damping but it all works fine.
I still have the big tank on and so I have left the higher rate springs in the front.
Pretty happy now.

:)
While Joe was riding my PD and I was on his DR I had a little incident on the DR.
At the last little stream crossing with that quite sharp entry and exit as I came out I gave the DR a bit of throttle and nothing happened. Joe's poor DR ended up lying on it's side.
It just didn't have the low down the PD had and it caught me out, and the full event was caught in technicolour.
