I have only had my bike about a month so I'm still pretty green when it comes to motorcycle mechanics.

Anyhow I was looking over my bike today (a Yamaha Zeal 250 '92) and found that the oil filter was covered in what looked like oil.

What I wanted help with was could you please identify what the black pipe in the picture is (I know it will be something really easy ) and also if this is normal for it to spit oil out.

Thanks for any help you can give me,
Cheers

Oh yeah thanks a lot :niceone:, I was thinking it was an overflow pipe. Just don't know if it is supposed to spit oil.

Yeah the hose is on tight ant the filter seems to be ok as well. I'm guessing its really nothing to worry about?

yeap looks like the crankcase breather pipe to me too.
Clean all the oil you can see off the filter and surrounding area, keep an eye on it for oil again.
When did you do the last oil change and clean the air filter?
Look around the motor for any other breather typr pies, make sure the clamps are tight and that the pipes are not blocked with debri.
Read your owners manual for the points you need to check weekly, you may have missed something that needs checking.
Enjoy your bike, but also remember its like a woman, High maintainence.

The last time the oil was changed was by the dealer when i bought it (only a month ago) but not too sure about the air or oil filter (don’t know if dealers are good with that sort of thing).
Thanks for the help

:Punk: Thanks for the help, had me worried for a bit thinking oil wasn't supposed to be there.

The oil breather pipe is there to allow breathing. If excessive amount of oil comes out then you might have too much oil in the motor, or your rings are worn and compression is going down in to the sump.

Check oil level. And when a chance, perhaps have the compression tested.

Good luck.

I have got a feeling there is too much oil in the engine because when I take the level compared to what the owners manuals says it should be it is way over. It was the shop that did it when i got it. Should I just leave it or drain the oil a bit to the required level?

Thanks

Drain it. In worst scenarion you get oil on rear tyre. And that is only good for burnouts...

I would empty, and fill with new oil. Won't cost you a fortune but atleast you know what is inside. Change filter too. Then you know what is going on.

Thanks for the offer.
I think I'll do what Conquiztador suggests and replace the oil and filter. Looking at the filter I wouldn't be surprised if it the original one since it looks pretty tacky, and at least this way I will know what oil is going engine. Will check the air filter to ensure no oil too.

Next question is what brand of oil and where to get the filter? I'm thinking just getting oil from supercheap and the filter from the local motorcycle shop but if anyone else has suggestions I will listen.

Cheers

Hey, quick tip if you've got excess oil:

Anybody who's ever tried to drain excess oil out of the sump knows it's a prick of a job. Pull out the sump bolt, drain until you think `oh that looks about right', then try and jam the bolt back in, spraying oil everywhere all over your hands and making a huge mess on the driveway.

What works better is to get an old spray-head pump out of a soap dispenser or glass cleaner or Spray'N'Wipe etc. (might be too fine for thick oil, though) with the long tube sticking out the bottom. Stick the tube down the oil filler and spray the oil out until you get to the level you want. Much less mess.

CheersOil filter in Hi Flo is an HF303 , I have one on the shelf for $15 . Get your oil from Supercheap it's cheaper , go for Castrol Active 4t , don't use car oils in bikes cos bikes have wet clutches and cars don,t .

I have found that local bike shops have same or better price oil. And more selection. But might depend on areas. Also worth considering, that there is a difference in oils and what is recommended for different bikes. Not much but...

Hi all, my apologies if I'm supposed to start a new discussion or something.

I'm after a bit of help. I have a 1992 Suzuki GSX600FN. Its engine seems to die on me occasionally when its slowing down (ie at lower revs). It starts again though. Anyone got any ideas?

I had the same problem with mine and I found out that it was running too rich so kept stalling at low revs.
