Mine never did that. It doesn't look unsafe to me (looks like the edge, rather than the guts of the strap), but I'd e-mail that image to HJC themselves and ask. If they aren't happy with it, go back to the shop and make noises about the Consumer Guarantees Act (specifically the bit about "fit for purpose")

It looks like it catching on velcro or somthing causing it to frey.
I would trim off the freyed bits and maybe just run a lighter over it to melt away any other loose bits. This will not only tidy it up but will stop those bits of material pulling even further out. Still looks ok though, it dosn't look bad.

Good call.
Still looks safe enough to me. Although I can understand why you may be a little pissed that it hasnt stayed new looking longer.

HJCs are good helmets. I can testify to their life saving abilitys after years of racing (crashing on the track) and road riding. Freyed straps are a fact of life if you catch them on velcro. Rhino has the idea.
Check out how the top of the line ones stack up to top brand name helmets. There is a pommy website that rates helmets based on real life situations the web address is http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/ go have a look. Remember to keep in mind prices.

Nothin wrong with HJC - they're a popular brand for a reason and well priced. I had one for a year or so and I cant say I ever noticed the wear that yours has... having said that, if I had I dont think I would be too concerned, it doesnt appear to be anything detrimental to the main body of the strap.

I have heard back from them
Hello Bryan,
I have had a look at the pictures that you sent us (thanks for the good
quality). I have seen this before and find that this is normally caused
by the strap rubbing against the Velcro on a jacket. There are no safety
concerns with the chin strap.
Regards

Yeah mine is starting to look like that too. Bit of a pain in the butt especially when it keeps getting caught on the stupid velcro when you are riding .

Nothing wrong with HJC helmets - that other chap is so negative in his posts .... he needs a hug.
I agree thats fine.
The funny thing is if that was a car seat-belt they would fail it. Unless you trim, burn it off as suggested. I know this shit as it cost me $400 for rear belts that had a bit of fuzz.
Funny how there are no WOF standards for your helmet - I am very surprised in this day and age that they are not included as part of the inspection.

It would be my guess and it is only a guess but I think these straps may have a core of another material in them which seatbelts don't. Can anyone confirm this?? :2thumbsup

I wouldn't be too concerned about that! I was expecting to see half the chinstrap worn through or something.

Notice how it is all on one side of the strap... the edge closest to your jacket?
