View Full Version : Manawatu: A Wee Pootle

17th August 2008, 16:17
This ride is intended as a “warm up” for the Grand Challenge in October. As such the aim is to cover approximately 984km in a day. This is not a tour or a race so there’s no unnecessary stops or excessive speeding – 13-14 hours with stops should be achievable without going silly. Start time is 8am at BP Rangitikei so be there earlier for gas or if you need caffeine. The route map is available here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Palmerston+North,+Manawatu-Wanganui,+New+Zealand&daddr=Cheltenham+Hunterville+Rd+%40-40.087570,+175.637440+to:Ongo+Rd+%40-39.924600,+175.559970+to:Mangahoe+Rd+%40-39.909480,+175.503800+to:Kauangaroa+Rd+%40-39.961809,+175.213948+to:Harrison+Rd+%40-39.962431,+175.213700+to:Matarawa+Valley+Rd+%40-39.941630,+175.156900+to:SH+4+%40-39.777854,+175.314690+to:National+Park,+Manawatu-Wanganui,+New+Zealand+to:SH+1+%40-38.887300,+175.953220+to:Te+Kuiti+to:Totoro+Rd+%40-38.553360,+174.978030+to:Mangapara+Rd+%40-38.853784,+174.984877+to:Turangi,+Waikato,+New+Zea land+to:Rangiwahia+Rd+%40-39.903220,+175.895200+to:Colyton+Rd+%40-40.255954,+175.697679+to:Saddle+Rd+%40-40.316070,+175.848920+to:-40.396372,175.783997+to:Palmerston+North,+Manawatu-Wanganui,+New+Zealand&hl=en&geocode=5877639551363491309,-40.087570,175.637440%3B17162497136998431576,-39.924600,175.559970%3B17935232719415029206,-39.909480,175.503800%3B8363083955957288589,-39.961809,175.213948%3B2428039930688389900,-39.962431,175.213700%3B16340901243555674656,-39.941630,175.156900%3B527173394423770186,-39.777854,175.314690%3B14983719318493426115,-38.887300,175.953220%3B12375208015988503690,-38.553360,174.978030%3B7426975487058216953,-38.853784,174.984877%3B14160477377713315735,-39.903220,175.895200%3B3163553023326109401,-40.255954,175.697679%3B8677869629783454733,-40.316070,175.848920%3B14431754183232125895,-40.337910,175.821020&mra=dme&mrcr=3&mrsp=17&sz=13&via=1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9,11,12,14,15,16,17&sll=-40.377675,175.784168&sspn=0.09677,0.138016&ie=UTF8&ll=-39.325799,175.693359&spn=3.144326,4.416504&z=8).

Stops are as per the map:

<!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->Palmy – National Park, 249km. Gas & slash and back on the road.
<!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->National Park to Te Kuiti, 231km. Late lunch.
<!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->Te Kuiti to Turangi, 256km. Gas & slash. Maybe a coffee everyone’s been behaving themselves.
<!--[endif]-->Turangi to Palmy, 247km. Greasy takeaways in town anyone?

Things to know:

<!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->Not a race, don’t come if you intend to end up in a ditch – we’ll leave ya there!
<!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->There is no support vehicle so stay out of the ditches (see above) and have a reliable bike.
<!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->The biggest distance between stops is 256km according to Google Maps. Who know how accurate this is? Don’t come if your bike won’t do 280km+ on a tank at a good cruise. There is only 3 petrol stops...
<!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->If you haven’t attempted something like this before then maybe this isn’t one for you – some of the roads are going to require a bit of concentration even after the 900km mark.
<!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->If you get tired then stop, let us know, find somewhere to sleep, then go home when you’re fresh again – remember: no crashing!
<!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->If the weather looks totally crap on the 12/9 then we may put the ride off to the 14th.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->If all that crap hasn’t put you off then stick your name down on the calendar event here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1696&day=2008-9-13)and we’ll see you at the BP on Rangitikei Street at 7:45am on the 13th of September.<!--[endif]-->

banditrider

Lol you leaving this open for the for the big tank tourers only BR ?

We want to use it for a practice for the GC so we're riding it like that. In the GC we try to ride non-stop for a full tank (unless we have to pick where the gas stations are) which is 300km+ plus. This won't be the last one of these we do so maybe we'll have one where the gas stops are a bit closer together. This time around we want to be on the bike 99% of the time.

Directions in type as Cowboyz has gotten himself lost in Rangitikei Street:
<o></o>

The easy bit: Palmy-Colyton-Cheltenham-Vinegar Hill-Hunterville
Hunterville-Fordell via backroads (dunno what they’re called but actually know the way)
Fordell-Wanganui-National Park
National Park-Turangi (47)
Turangi-Taupo
Taupo-Whakamaru (Poihipi road then 32)
Whakamaru-Te Kuiti (30)
South on 3 from Te Kuiti, turn left at Totora Rd to Aria and then on Ohura Road
Left off Ohura road onto Mokauiti road
Through Mokauiti and onto Ramaroa Road to Highway 4
Right onto 4 and then right again onto Ohura Road again all the way to Ohura
Leave Ohura via Mangaparo Road and then right onto 43 to Tamarunnui
41 to Turangi and then 1 to Mangaweka
Rangiwahia-Cheltenham-Colyton-Ashhurst-Woodville (via saddle)
Woodville-Balance-track and home.

Been through all the Ohura stuff before on a GC or 2 so know the roads are ok. We will need to look out for some of the turn-offs though. Also, they are all typical back-roads: narrow, windy, stock etc.

Good luck, knees are lovely things until they break or dislocate.Mate had an off in '86 at 70-80km,no cartilage around knee now,was only 22 at time, quack wanted to replace knee but the guy was too young as they needed replacing approx every 15yrs or so.

Brian (mate with the Connie) came through Tamarunui & the Paras yesterday (in a car) and said that the Paras in particular had taken a bit of a hammering in the recent weather. I'm picking that the back roads around Aria, Ohura etc could all have had the same sort of treatment. Possibly even around Rangi as well (might have to do a recce on the Honda...).

This isn't gonna change the route or anything - just a warning to all that we're gonna have to be aware of this sort of thing. Adds to the fun and all that.

Don't wash ya bike before the ride...

Why do some people run marathons or climb mountains? Same sort of thing really. It's not a race at all - it's a bit of a practice for the Grand Challenge in October. That's 1,000 miles in 24 hours and you do not have to race to complete that either. It's about taking on a bit of a challenge and the pleasure you get out of succeeding - and to top it all off it involves bikes!

Nothing to do with being a real biker either. If it's not ya cup of tea it's not ya cup of tea. I hate tea but am addicted to these sorts of rides.

Give it a crack one day - you might get hooked! Ride safe!

35 is the norm

i thought they were reducing fines considerably and increasing demerits considerably

not sure when it's supposed to happen though

At least I wasn't in that last group.

They'll be lucky if they're allowed bikes.

Have heard that the demerits go on as soon as you complete the transaction so sooner ya pay the sooner the points are gone. Not sure how accurate that is but could be worth it. Off to see the bank manager tomorrow...

The date you pay the fine may have little relevance to you.

The important date is the date of offence. The points remain active for a 2 year period from the date of offence. They are cancelled when a licence holder is disqualified for a period of 6 months or more, or when a licence holder is suspended for demerit points. If a licence holder accumluates 100 or more points within a 2 year period then the points all remain active until the last offence that took the total 2 100 is older than 2 years. Section 88 - 92 of the Landtransport Act 1998 might be worth a look at.

Will re-run the ride again at some stage seeing that we didn't stick to the planned route. Probably in the new year - a lot of riding on in the next wee while...

Thinking about this again. Maybe Feb sometime - anyone else keen?

and a finisher I would expect!

That's rule number 1. Everyone must finish - no offs tolerated!
