View Full Version : So long and thanks for all the fush

Some of you may or may not know already, but I'm upping and leaving this place in 4 days time. Off to French speaking Belgium on an AFS student exchange for a year. So this thread is to pay thanks to all the people I've bludged off over the years and to say goodbye to NZ as I may not have time to make a post before I go...
As I type this, I sit here in a rather smelly, bright red, too-big-for-me work shirt. I'm no longer employed, I'm no longer a school student, I don't even have a family in Belgium to go to. As some might say, I'm another unemployed, uneducated yobbo kid of NZ.
Thanks to the NZ Education department for 12.5 yrs of mediocre education - I didn't really go to learn; lunch and girls were my main reason for school.
Thanks to my employers over the past few years, who've successfully aided me in my ways to become another binge drinking statistic, boy racer statistic and any other statistic you can think of in which I may be a part of.
Thanks to KB for giving me a few good laughs and heaps of support over my 2.5/3 yrs of riding in NZ. I won't be riding in Belgium due to the cost of insurance, and when I get back I'll be a poor student with a drum kit who'll need a car. But if you ever need the cobwebs blown outta your bikes, I'll be happy to help you out.
Thanks to the olds eh. 17 quality years of being dragged up proper-like. Been a few rough times; eating poisonous shit, eating sharp crap, needing endless amounts of surgery, endless amount of money to pay for all my expensive hobbies (music, motorbikes, fire dancing), putting up with all my racket and stupidity (breaking my thumb learning how to ride a bike, cutting my hand on a whiskey glass, concussing myself on the boot of Cloady's car - the list goes on)...But in amongst all the rough times, I think you guys did a pretty good job and I thank you for that.
Pat/Speights Bud. You probably won't even read this shit, but oh well. Good laughs and good times. Pretty much sums up the 4/5yrs we been mates. Never struggle to find something to laugh at or take the piss out of. Thanks for the help with breaking my thumb, cutting my hand and all the other shit we've ended up doing which has resulted in me hurting myself. I'm pretty sure you're what they'd call a good cunt, and I'd agree. Creme de la creme bro.
Um. Um. Um. Thanks to everyone else who's been there for me when I've needed it and to all my KB mates. I'll see you all after July next year sometime (except any of you who come to the Toby Jug in Manakau on Wednesday). Will have to have another party when I get back I suppose.:apint:
Don't know if there's much else to say, but I'll be sure to update KB with a few stories from Belgium. Four days and I'll be a foreign exchange student...and going by all the stories I hear/am involved in with the foreigners, it's gunna be a once in a lifetime experience and I'll definitely make the most of it, through the ups and the downs.
In the words of a typical NZ teenager...
Thnx 2 al use fullaz hu been real choice nd stuffs aye (read as eh). Im takn a bear and fukn off ovaseas bro, nd will c use al nxt yr. Churr.

My two daughters did that. One went to Holland of the AFS and the other to France on ASSE. Made a big difference to both of them. You will come back a different man and wiser too.
All the best and good luck.

Don't forget to turn the light off when you leave Noo Zeelund mmmkay?I'm sure the older folk on KB and in the real world (yes...there is a real world!) will tell you one year you missed going by is nothing...they probably won't remember a whole decade (60's, *cough*).
I always deny, deny, deny. Or act completely oblivious to any upset happenings around me. Seems to have worked 95% of the times for 17 years so far.
Them farmer's sons are trouble enough (Patrick...?), let alone the daughters. Add farmer's offspring and XX... You just get more trouble than a poor urban half-cast nigger kid like me can handle.

As i believe came up in a much older farts trip to europe thread, make sure you visit all the breweries and consume the good stuff (tm). Accordin to teh wikipedia you can drink beer at 16 in belgium, and spirits at 18. So have fun and try not to get alchohol poisoning :-)

Belgium don't have a "drinking" age, as such. They have a buying age. So at 16, you can go and buy beer and wine, where ever it is sold. And you can go to the pub too. And in that pub, at 16, you can buy cocktails or shooters etc. But until you are 18, you can not go into an off-licence and buy a bottle of Vodka or Gin.
It's a good idea, as it promotes safer drinking, rather than once you can buy alcohol, you can buy whatever you like, in whatever amounts you like. It just ends up nasty.

It's ironic that the countries with the most draconian drinking laws have the worst records for drinking.
There's a very "laissez faire" attitude to drinking in mainland Europe but the binge drinking seems to stay in the UK where the laws are strictest for some reason.

We could not have done this without the generosity of so many on KB who saw Zac as a "worthy cause" and donated money/time to help him achieve his goal. You guys know who you are and we are all very grateful.
As for him being a switched on kid, that too, is a "community" effort. He has had some truly wonderful people in his life who have imparted wisdom and put time in to him, to make him what he is today. (I also think we had a pretty good one to start with, gotta have been the easiest of our brood to parent...)
It was not all our doing, FF, but thanks for your kind words:love:

No worries, I've got ear plugs so that and the wind noise should drown out his bitching/moaning/screaming/praying to god to spare his life....

Ther Belgians love NZ and its people, something to do with our Kiwi soldiers, I guess (however they are not so fond of the Aussies).
You could need more than ear plugs!
He should be speaking French (with a Kiwi accent, of course). One of the AFS rules is you must make a real effort to learn the language, shouldn't be too hard, he will be surrounded by it, home, school and everywhere else!
Look forward to the pics....
