Yeah makes you think. Shows how much safety technology has moved on. The Volvo driver didn't look too hot!

I'm glad I got my wife a big modern car then. Best of both worlds eh?

My old Nissan Bluebird ARX actually stood up really well to geting T boned at an intersection by a Mercedes Benz though.

Merc hit me on the right hand wheel arch.

Wait till you see their bollard crash test. The damn things can stop an 18 wheeler in it's tracks!!

Very interesting. I'd like to have seen a head-on collision between the Volvo and the Renault instead of the of-set collision. Then the situation might have been slightly different.

But there's certainly no argument that brains beats brawn any day of the week!

Think I would still want to be in the "big old tank" ;)

I loved how some of the cars started backing away from the tank when it started moving again. They looked a bit like scared sheep

Yeah, sanitised version of Top Gear, but without balls, loutish behaviour, greenie bashing, mindless vandalism.... Okay so it's not like Top Gear really :Pokey:

Also they failed to mention the instantaneous 180 performed by the Renault. Even with the protection of air bags that would give the occupants internals a serious stir up

yeah i don;t like the show much either, mostly the presenters

but the good point is they do have someone who really does know how to drive tiff, he has raced in F1 and such.

but they are more just inform you on specs, but with no real humor, or anything

Yeah, I agree Top Gear sucks and the Stig is a nana...

...not.

On the other hand - I'm more interested in the opinion of an enthusiast than that of an F1 driver when it comes to choosing a car for the road.

Yeah all these programs by and large are bullshit, entertaining none the less. Cars like bikes...Bye what you want to drive, don't base any decision on what journalist's and presenter's have to say.
I do find the over the top excessive sliding of the cars, particularly the handbrake induced one on front wheel drive car that you see on 5th gear gets on my wick after a while.
Note:
1. Vickie Butler-Henderson is HOT!

2. Just because a big old cars have a lot of metal in them does'nt mean they are safe in a life threatening accident.

3. The Stig ROCKS!

Can you tell me when Tiff Needle was a Formula One race car driver?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiff_Needell

'Racing career

Needell first raced at a driving school at Brands Hatch in 1970. He progressed to Formula Ford, his progress assisted by the use of a Lotus 69 FF he won in an Autosport magazine competition.[1] The remainder of the 1970s saw Needell as a front runner in the British Formula 3 series and then in the Aurora British Formula One championship. In 1979 he was unable to graduate to the F1 World Championship due to the lack of the correct licence, but he was back in 1980, driving two Grands Prix for Ensign, qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder. However, he had an engine problem and did not finish the race. He subsequently failed to qualify for the Monaco Grand Prix.'

Im another fan of top gear. They just have the right attitude, even if Clarkson hates bikes.

I would definately feel safer in the small modern car with a 5 star safety rating though. Fuck getting my legs crushed like that!

They also did an impresive test with a smart car.

Stig only really drives around the test track, not giving reviews of the car. We all know stig, is also an ex/current f1 driver or simlar, but when testing supercars and comparing them, only people who really really know how to drive can really notice the difference. Just different make up

Top gear is 10x better than 5th gear, i have downloaded every esp of top gear s1 thru to s11, i never downloaded a 5th gear esp.

Top gear know how to do a tv show information with some humour and fun, 5th gear is just more information/spec sorta show.

Tiff was a presenter on top gear, in the previous format/line up -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_(original_format)

Hmm, world F1...two races and 1 start...but yes none the less I guess he was there however briefly it might have been.
I stand by what I said earlier about these programs being more about the entertainment than anything else and the only persons opinion you should really trust when your shelling out hard earned coin is your own.

I'd like to know how they edit those programs I can't seriously believe that they would be setting a "fast" time on tyres they've just done their level best to destroy.

As was VBH at one point too.
And yes Top Gear is indeed a much more entertaining show.

I kinda disagree with this.

The Stig does the review that a racing driver can do better than Joe Average - namely drive the car to it's limits. The fact that he always does so on a well-known and closed track means that the lap-times are comparable and you can assume that a shorter time equals a faster car.

Every thing else is covered by the other presenters and has more to do with feel and character of the vehicle.

It's no different from bikes in this regard. There are very few riders who are capable of riding a modern sportsbike to the limits of it's capabilities (and those who can probably wouldn't on the public road). Thus, the exact level of performance is quite irrelevant - you choose your bike based on other, less-quantifiable, merits, ultimately on your personal opinion.

Yep spotted that - the old "Light meets heavy and light has to give way' thing.

Has anybody seen those funny little Mercedes Benz cars, normally red and black?

They stand up to quite an impact without being crushed, they're VERY strong.

5th gear was started because the beeb cancelled top gear and channel 5 took over most of the team. Top gear was only resurrected because 5th Gear was doing so well in the TV ratings.

Personally I prefer 5th gear but there you go.

I saw some photos of a Nissan Cube today that was in a 6 car multi fatality pileup - it was hit in the front and both side in the rear.Like the Renault the drivers compartment was intact, door pillar unmoved and door undamaged.Pity the driver died. One of the other cars that went under a truck was unrecognizable,it was just shredded.Modern cars are tougher than they look....but I like being in our Mercedes or the Pajero.

I was very disappointed that the german girl (who raced the transit van around the Nürburgring) never joined the Top Gear staff. She seemed like a lot of fun.
