View Full Version : Where is the best place to live in NZ

Bikernereid
18th August 2008, 20:20
I have been asked by a potential employer where I would like to be based in NZ. As I have only experienced the North Island and for some reason mostly the west coast I would like to get a little more knowledge of other parts of NZ from residents. I know that everyone will have different opinion and taste but it is a little difficult to gain the experiences for myself.

I would like to know where you would most like to live in NZ and why?

Hmmm I chose Tauranga, not that I have actually lived there, visited plenty but I am going to try my hardest to work as a house surgeon there.
Its always sunny, close to Auckland if your that way inclined. Heaps of sweet roads, Close to Taupo track, good surf, it has always just seemed like a happy place to be.
Have lived in Dunedin for the past five years, its not bad but way too cold! Palmerston North is shit!
Wellington is amazing, very cultural there's always sweet live music happening somewhere. Not too big a city...I don't like big so much

Nelson
Good climate.
Great roads
Happy people
I would love to make Nelson my home base when I retire, as from there I can get to anywhere, north island or south island with the min fuss. There is a large biker community in the area, a great starting point for any bike ralley.
If I need to get some casual work for extra cash, there are heaps of Vineyards and orchards around that always need a casual worker.

Tauranga makes sense. Close to Coromandel...

Have they given you all those cities as options?

Nope but just tying to get a feel of what NZ has to offer and what the regions are like too.

Tauranga rocks!!!!:Punk:

Like rachprice said, sun, surf, sand, chicks in bikinis, lots of bikers, the posuer crew, sweet roads, mint people. Hell where else would you want to live!

I lived in Wellington for 9 years and it was great fun, but the shit weather got to me in the end, lived in the waikato for ages but the fog got me there!

Wow!- from a biking perspective - ANYWHERE in NZ is cool.
Depends what you are looking for though Im sure. The east coast of the north island between south Auckland and Whakatane has awesome road loops, google Pacific Coast Highway and Coromandel Loop 3 race tracks, safe beaches, lakes, thermal areas
and hot pools. Employment, Restaurants, Pubs, Concerts, Bike shops. Dirt bike riding is well catered for. Taupo hosted 2006 ISDE. Huge MX scene family trailrides every weekend! Over The Top Adventures. Trail Tours.

get over here:banana:

Most definitely:sunny: Nelson, for all of the above!!!!! :first:

as well as: if you are into the outdoors, we have drop dead stunning mountains, rivers, & beaches.. & all within an hour (ish) drive from the central city! A fantastic arty crafty scene! Tis an incredibly picturesque place to live (check out a heap of my photo attachments)! While it was apparently freezing cold & snowing just out of ChCh today.. I had all the doors & windows open, basking in a glorious day here!!!! :wari:

I was faced with a similar dilemma recently. With interest rates going the way they were we had to get out of Auckland (which is a shame as I have a lot of friends there that I can't ride with any more :().

I then looked at various other bits of NZ. I considered Nelson until I saw the house prices. Same as Auckland so the question then was "Can I earn more in Nelson than in Auckland?" answer was not a hope in hell. Since earning half the salary and paying more mortgage would be a dumbarsed move I found myself looking at Timaru, Oamaru and Invercargill. Looked for work in those centres and ended up here.

No regrets. Catlins on my doorstep. Teretonga raceway. Oreti Beach. Remarkables Ski fields 2 hours drive. Bluff oysters. One of the fastest velodrome tracks in the southern hemisphere. I just need to persuade all my Auckland mates to move down here now.

Nelson-mind you the places you holiday in seem great to visit.

Queenstown-but too pricey in town and cold in winter.

New Plymouth-great sea and coastal vistas, only short drive to Dorkland.

Hawkes Bay-summer,wine and summer.

Palmerston North-except when cold and wet during days off, summer is cool.

If accommodation is provided - go to the most expensive place. If you have to provide your own - go to the cheapest place.McJim has the idea.

I am happy in the Waikato....but wouldn't live in Hamilton.Huntly was ultra cheap, and it's practically a suburb of both Hamilton and Auckland.Believe it or not I went to live on Waiheke Island because it was very cheap....but you wouldn't live there now for that reason.

Lived there, went to school there.

Might as well be at Invercargill except you have more wasps, more wierdos, more 'wannabe' white supremists and a shit-load of other negatives we don't have in the deep south.

We have cold weather at times and?? and??? and? - bugger, that's it, cold weather.

And just where is 'The Riviera of the South'?

Mouth of the Big River....The Mighty Clutha River.

As for being cold down here - it's not even as cold as London in the Winter - certainly holds no fear for me coming from Glasgow. The log burner is crackling away happily - the cat is cooking herself in front of it. The house is an '80s build with good insulation, underfloor, roof and wall cavity.

No problem.

You're English. You're not going to cope anywhere other than Auckland, until you turn 40 and mysteriously metamorphose into a sturdy pearls and twinset horse-faced middle aged woman.

Then you will want to move somewhere with a lawn bigger than Somerset and a Rose garden cloned from a bunch of ancient Regency rose bushes, originally from the Duchess of Beaufort's first 16 varieties.

There's some places like that in the Waikato.

I hate big cities and after living in London for 4 years went slight nuts. I am a country gurl much to Westy cityboy OWNERS dismay. I like open space and although I would love animals don't think that will happen (see above). I don't mind commuting if necessay and really like to be within reasonable distance to skiing, trecking etc etc. I want a slower pace of life but want to be able to enjoy all my hobbies at the same time.

As for being English I bloody hate most of them and that is why I am leaving the UK again. Have never and will never consider myself to be English, I am European 1st and foremost.

Luckily I don't turn 40 for another 5ish years and if I do turn into one of those women I give OWNER written consent to put me out of my and his misery!!

As you get older you will realize that people are more important than places.

If you are young and make friends easily, any place in NZ will suit. If you are older and dont make friends easily, stay where you are. People can be very lonely in the middle of a big city.

You are a biker so you will find many like you on this list so making friends should not be hard anywhere in NZ.

Good luck.

I lived in the Bay Of Islands for many years, one of the most beautiful and warm places in NZ, but as I enter old age, I shifted to Hamilton to be near relations and friends and I have never regreted it.

I would love to make Nelson my home base when I retire, as from there I can get to anywhere, north island or south island with the min fuss. There is a large biker community in the area, a great starting point for any bike ralley.

Absolutely! Nelson all the way!
I love Chch but there's way too many boy racers and ruggers spoiling it for everyone else now. Alot of very arrogant, ignorant people. Such a shame!
Nelson is so relaxed and easy going and lots of nice roads close by to enjoy.

Auckland rocks! Best little city in the third world I have ever lived in.
Why? Here are the reasons:
1. you and a million of your fellow friends can meet on rutted, classic motorways (for that off road experience all while never leaving Epsom),
2. tiny, crowded residential streets full of "project" cars proudly displayed on front yards for your inspection,
3. uber-expensive homes built out of the finest, low grade materials (leaky homes save pipes which is good for the environment ),
4. plenty of frigid, ugly, horse-faced drunk women who travel in packs and think they are refined because they say use deodorant, wash weekly and can say "latte" and "cafe" and "you pay" all while never taking the look of disgust off their faces,
5. boy racers roaring through the dark, wet nights, in expensive cars paid for by our taxes,
6. dairies where you can get killed by crims while shopping (@ No extra charge),
7. parking lots where elderly people get robbed and murdered (2 for 1 deal!),
8. restaurants where service isn't included in the high price for the camphobacteria laden food (value added, as they say in the industry),
9. high council rates which includes broken bottles at your kerb for no additional charge,
10. road courtesy shown to no one, especially bikers,
11. warm, sub tropical climate,
12. cultural artistic expression pieces sprayed on your walls and/or fences (included in council rates, again at no additional charge),

But, the flip side of living in Auckland is

Ahh.. now that is worth another mention! if you ride here and get transfixed by the beautiful scenery, mid corner, you might need to be picked up and taken home!
Depending on the severity of your damage and your cuteness, I will take you to your place , my place or a safe place where you can be picked up later by your loved ones!
Thankfully last summer, I only had two call outs and neither involved mangled bodies. But as the weather warms up I will give the loop riders a reminder that Im here if it all turns to shit while you are scratchin in the hills! I have trailer, tools, tubes, tiedowns, turettes and tequilla!:done:

Ya forgot to mention friendly ! (ok happy works) But the further south ya go the more ppl will acknowledge ya in the street ! Done a few miles and the sth islanders will always stop to say gidday (drag ya off to their place to stay even if there's a mob of ya)

Brrrrrrrrrrrr

Bloody hippy lol ! Motueka for you lass !

Was wondering who was gonna lock that in ! Lol wise man if i ever seen one !

Don't think it matters what anyone says here, think owners got it sussed ! A hippy should fit right on in at the mt !

Still recon if ya look at the weather we been having last couple of months ! Nelson is the winner for bikers !

I come from a small village of about 3500 peeps and mostly everyone say Hi and gives you the time of day even if they don't know you. But that is the North for you, not like most bloody snooty, wouldn't help their granny if she needed it Southerners!

As for Hippy, I guess that does fit in with me being a RIGHT WING, humanitarian green. I just love nature and usually prefer animals to humans (yes animals don't answer back:lol:. I like my privacy when at home so yes I would love a HUGE secluded garden (don't have much space for them over here). I lived on a mountain in Wales and was surrounded by sheep, it was the best place I ever lived with views over the water.

And OWNER is a smart grasshoper!!

Taupo FTW :D

Awesome lake for skiing, fishing, sailing and all those other water based sports
Mountains an hour and a half away but nearly always in view
Taupo track ten mins away
Can ride around the lake, which is an awesome ride with amazing views
Mountainbike tracks if your pedal inclined
Scenic walking tracks

The down sides are...
If you like clothes shopping, Taupo isn't very good
It's pretty boring if you're a young teen, but if you're old enough to get out and about and explore... Then it's awesome :D

Taupo is pretty muchly the only place I'd live in the North Island, if it wasn't here... Then it'd be in the South Island some where.

In reality... Any where but Auckland, big cities scare me <_<

Christchurch is the best City in my opinion. Brought up in Auckland, lived in Chch for 7 years and the climate is great (except for about 6 to 8 weeks of cold, the people are a bit reserved but good when you get to know them, the roads are brilliant and there's not too much traffic. You can't get lost here either, navigate via the Alps or Port Hills or just follow the 'black lines' :innocent: over the hill and your in Akaroa. ps if you're after a job in psychiatry/prison still I have a friend you could send your CV to. He's not directly in charge of that department but would be a good starting point. pm me if you want his details

I guess if I don't have a job to go to before I arrive I might just head down to the South Island for a little while to see what I think. Christchurch sounds really interesting and quaint and I have heard that the scenry down south is awesome.

I don't have a problem moving to somewhere I have never visited before and have done this a few times but if I would like OWNER to come with me it is only fair to try and make a decision that doesn't have him going nuts cos the roads are w*nk or there is bugger all to do.

There's 4 million people in NZ.

There is no reason at all for anyone to descend into parochial chest beating at the first hint of someone asking a genuine question because the reality is the character of NZ towns and cities is established by its primary function and the amount of money its inhabitants can borrow.

Quite frankly Rudolph's reply has me considering leaving NZ again, but I keep remembering the way Wellington looked when we came back from the last OE.

NZ is a great place to live, but a lot of the population who've never travelled, and by that I don't mean a beer fuelled stay in Shepherd's Bush or Sydney, have an over-inflated opinion of NZ's importance in the scheme of things, and an under-inflated appreciation of what they have at their finger tips.

Overall though, the Reactionary (note the big R) nature of the "average" (you know, racist, elitist so long as the elite don't earn more than 60K a year, materialist, oval-ball sport worshipping, Ford or Holden driving) Kiwi does blight the way we treat each other. The Overt Racism inherent in somewhere like Southampton or LA is much easier to deal with than the subtle tension that defines everything in NZ.

NZ - the land of absolutes.

Wicked...could surmise that you may have social issues and find it hard to play with others?

IMO most places in N.Z are good however some are simply better than others but it all really comes down to what one requires from where they live.
Personally I'm/we're enjoying living in Tauranga for several reasons.
Plenty of work...good live style...close to Taupo track and soon to be Hampton Downs...close to Auckland (kids/parents etc there)...gorgeous beaches for a City...excellent roads for riding...good people...did I mention Taupo track and Hampton Downs?

Christchurch... best bike rallys and pleanty of in NZ, awesome race tracks, mint as hell roads covering all types of terain, compaired to the N/I less traffic, safer roads less rain, and for the 2 months were it may be to cold to ride, then theres pleanty of time for shaging by the fire :msn-wink:

Quaint, yeah, that's the one.

Best place in NZ to be a cyclist, worst place in NZ to be an asthmatic.

I have heard that the scenry down south is awesome.

That would be all the scenery you can't see from Christchurch.

I still like the place, of course.

TBH I don't know what all the fuss is about. This isn't a big country. It's really just a choice between NI and SI. Aside from that, anything is a day's ride from anything else.

And it's all, frankly, pretty damn nice.

If I had my druthers and was a gentleman of leisure, I'd live in west Northland or Hawkes Bay. For me, though, my work pretty much dictates living in either Auckland or Christchurch.

Even Auckland, the place every other NZer loves to loathe, rates in the Mercer's Quality of Living Survery (whatever the fuck that is) as the fifth best place in the world to live, behind Zurich, Vienna, Geneva and Vancouver.

So, effectively, it's the second best place in the world to live; who'd want to live surrounded by the Swiss?

:niceone:

Frankly, I consider myself damn lucky to have suffered the fortunate accident of being born an NZ citizen.

Lucky you being an NZ citizen!!

The Swiss aren't so bad and the scenery round Zurich is amazing. Sweet roads to be found in Switzerland too but to live there is way to expensive.

Vancouver is the bomb and if I hadn't have met OWNER and visited NZ I would be moving there. Well I would be living in the burbs on a farm with the rellies and beautiful views of the rockies. Why am I wanting to move to NZ again???

I think from what I have heard there is like in som many places good and bad things about where you live. I think the decision is going to be based upon job prospects fot me and OWNER, house and land prices and if I can pursuade OWNER that wherever we are it is not going to be that far away from his family. After all the South Island is a darn site closer to Auckland than the UK !!

Wellington entered negative territory, down 1.6% in July, while Auckland values sagged further to -3.6%. Only Invercargill bucked the trend, rising 5.4%.

Invercargill not the place to buy at the moment then.

Muwahahaha! 5.4% from what though  You still get what you pay for in Invercargill. Elsewhere the houses are way overpriced hence the correction they are experiencing at the moment. Auckland houses have this thing called "Indoor-Outdoor flow" which involves big windows, ranch sliders and decking. The upsot of all this glass? Too hot in summer, too cold in winter, in fact there are about two weeks in the year where the temperature is just right.

Rather than looking at house price growth trends look at the ratio of average earnings versus average house prices - then you'll look at places like Wanganui, Taranaki and Southland more favourably.

I love the Taranaki region but OWNER doesn't!! We have been looking at houses around Auckland but can't decide whether to but one that needs lots of work or one that is pretty ok as it is. I guess if we do settle outside Auckland it would be better to buy one that doesn't really need much work as our builder expert lives in Auckland.

if I can get a job in my field the salary will probably be pretty much the same as the UK. The real benefit for me is that the house prices are so much lower in NZ. I win all round really- nice house, with ONWER in NZ!!

try whangarei or nearby. Slower pace but big enough to have everything you ever want. great roads, lots of fantastic beaches and fishing close by. Warm too. Last time I went north got to the city at 8.00 a.m. and you wouldn't have even known it was supposed to be rush hour.

...and also full of wannabe gang bangers/homies...robbers......poor schooling...beaches are crap unless you travel....a distinct lack of work especially at the moment...over inflated property prices atm too.
We moved from there just over 19months ago to Tauranga....the best move possible!

but I am loving Auckland:shutup:
One of the finest harbours in the world. Beautiful yachting and fishing right on the doorstep.

New plymouth!!!:Punk:
There is certainly something in the water that assists the beauty of the females there...

Auckland has a lot going for it considering its size, compare it to Brisbane

No. It doesn't. In the slightest.

Auckland's a shit-hole in comparison. No infrastructure, shitty roads, full of useless fucks who won't get off their arses and work, full of boi-racers with biscuit tins badly welded onto the exhaust pipes of their 1985 Hyundais, run by self-serving politicos who can't see further ahead than dinner time (paid for by the tax-payer, of course), etc. etc.

Yes, Auckland has some reasonable beaches within half an hour's drive. But so does Brisbane. Interesting places to visit? Erm ... still trying to think of some that Brisbane doesn't have equivalents of that are generally better.

Oh, and it hasn't rained here for the last five weeks solid.

I chose Auckland.

For me anywhere that you have to travel for half an hour just for a pint of milk or hospital is to remote.

Some people like that, me it has to be close to utilities and civilization.

Work is easier to find in Auckland, roads are reasonably well maintained and there is easy access to some fantastic roads for motorcycles.

West Auckland for example - 5 minutes to mway, 15 mins to city centre. Or 10 minutes in other direction and you have at least 3 beaches, the waitakere ranges are stunning and full of tracks and waterfalls etc.

North Shore is full of blond makeup artists but the main highway up north is right at your fingertips.

South Auckland - great if your white and lost the will to live.

East Auckland - great for those on the unemployment benefit and if you like people stopped every 100m by police.

My pick is Auckland - and specifically West Auckland.

Oh and top reason to live in Auckland? I LIVE THERE ! ;)

I must say I enjoy Christchurch for a number of reasons... Not going to list them all - but the top of the list would include stuff like easy access to wonderful outdoor country, not too big, not too small, good spot for biking, etc...
That said, if I could get an interesting and well-paid job in my field in Nelson I'd move up there in a heartbeat.

NZ is pretty damn marvellous to be honest. I'd prefer South to North mainly due to traffic and population density (the North Island isn't bad though - we're pretty much spoiled for space here :) - but the North has some magnificient scenery as well. Maybe not as dramatic as the Southern Alps, but still...

Only place I couldn't imagine myself living would be Auckland. I'm sure it's not a bad place - but if I had to suffer a 1,000,000+ people city I think I could find somewhere else I'd rather be (higher salaries, better infrastructure, more culture and history).

5/ Great nightlife

 :bs:

I hate big cities and after living in London for 4 years went slight nuts. I am a country gurl much to Westy cityboy OWNERS dismay. I like open space and although I would love animals don't think that will happen (see above). I don't mind commuting if necessay and really like to be within reasonable distance to skiing, trecking etc etc. I want a slower pace of life but want to be able to enjoy all my hobbies at the same time

South Island

I think a lot of Europeans who decide to move to NZ would have that mentality to be honest.

Ahh.. now that is worth another mention! if you ride here and get transfixed by the beautiful scenery, mid corner, you might need to be picked up and taken home!

I had that happen on one of the gravel roads around Bank's Peninsula - came around a corner and I all but forgot to ride my bike. Absolutely stunning.

Fortunately you can live on the hill - that gets you out of the smog. It can be a bit of a challenge on your bicycle when coming home though (or at least so I have been told ;) )

[quote=jrandom]That would be all the scenery you can't see from Christchurch.
...
Frankly, I consider myself damn lucky to have suffered the fortunate accident of being born an NZ citizen.

Living on the hill solves the scenery issue too - lovely view across the plains to the Southern Alps and the Kairkoura ranges

And you're pretty damn lucky to have been born into the western world in the first place. Beats Bangladesh or Burkina Faso any day of the week.

Funny that - Switzerland and British Columbia were the two other destinations we were considering when we moved down here. And they are two of the alternatives we might consider in the future depending upon how everything goes.

Lattes are a breakfast drink, mmm kay?

Anyone who drinks coffee with frothy milk in it after 10am should buy some leopard skin tights and a Bichon Frise.

I'm sure whipped cream, brown sugar and tullamore dew are acceptable additions to your coffee... Even after dinner

Well after hearin what all of you have said I am still VERY confused. And to boot I have realised just how much I will miss my home county of lincolnshire. Taking OWNER there to meet my ma and for BSB at cadwell has made me realise how spoilt I was as a child without realising it. There is plenty of space, very few tourists, great history and culture, and BLOODY brilliant roads for bikes. AND NO SOUTHERNERS is always a bonus!!!

Not that I will ever move back there after visiting NZ but I did have pangs when I was back there this weekend. Had forgotten how cheap it is to live there, how totally cool my mates are as I already knew we have the BEST track in the world. (Philip Island my ass, it is for pussies- OWNER wanted to try and see how Cadwell compared!!).

But I do know that I really don't want to be in a city!!!

I think the decision is going to be based upon job prospects fot me and OWNER, house and land prices and if I can pursuade OWNER that wherever we are it is not going to be that far away from his family. After all the South Island is a darn site closer to Auckland than the UK !!

I think it wouldnt matter where in the world you live, no matter how beautiful it is, IF you arent happy with your self and the situation you are in. IF you view your hubby/partner as your "OWNER"...... THAT IS SO SAD

I guess that you are commenting on something you know nothing about. Shane is my partner, equal, love of my life and his hande is OWNER. I think you judging me and my relationship without knowing anything about me or it says more about you than me.

You obviously have no idea about where I am in my life so please keep your comments to yourself.

Nelson
Good climate.
Great roads
Happy people
I would love to make Nelson my home base when I retire, as from there I can get to anywhere, north island or south island with the min fuss. There is a large biker community in the area, a great starting point for any bike ralley.
If I need to get some casual work for extra cash, there are heaps of Vineyards and orchards around that always need a casual worker.

good call--Nelson has a good climate;I lived in Blenheim for 6 yrs & we used to argue with Nelsonians about who had the most sunshine...I think Blenhein wins.I would say the Sth Is as it has the best roads; Dont go to Timaru haha--I grew up there. Dunedins too friggin cold & Speights beer is Yuk.

I loved Speights beer when tried it in London but it didn't taste quite the same in NZ. it didn't have the same licorice taste, odd.

nelson does seem quite popular, will put it on the to visit list for sure. Thanks
