Just booked my Restricted for 9:30 AM out in Brown's Bay on Monday August 25th...

....I am a wee bit nervous!

Can anyone share some info, is this a good location to sit the test at, what sort of route do you take, is the instructor good? I've been riding over 6 months and done a lot of k's in that time but still quite nervous about taking the test...

I'm sure I will do ok but is there anything in particular that anyone can advise I should look out for, I ride a Hyobag GT250R '07, it's all warranted/registered and all but I wonder how accurate the speedo is as they often tend to be a bit out, is this something I should talk to the instructor about?

Any help/advice/info very much welcome!

Hi mate I live near there, and I did mine there too, starting from the soccer club, the instructor looks like a big angry truck driver, but hes a really nice guy, but i have seen a woman doing the motorbike tests aswell, I think that might be his partner or something, they drive a really old school falcon ute, its a little bit odd to be honest being followed by a old ute for your riding test, anyway i headed north on east coast road then down lonely track road, then left down fairview av, back to oteha valley road, back up to east coast road, back to the soccer club. It was a piece of cake, though i think they have changed the route now, because lonely track road used ot be 70kph, but now its 50, and they are supposed to take you on a 70 road I think. Hint: he told me i should get a high vis vest, so maybe wear one if you want bonus points!! but just relax, make sure you know what they will potentially test you on, and you'll do fine.

If you're around that morning keep an eye out for a yellow Hyosung being followed by that same truck it is probably me!

have read of the road code, it explains what they will test you on, but its good to move your head alot, i did that and the guy commented that was good to see i was looking around.

Don't forget to check your bike, make sure all lights and indicators are going.

Did my restricted and full there, had the same guy for both too! Best thing I did was ride the actual route prior to doing the test.....gets rid of those nerves.

Thanks guys. I'm definitely going to remember to make my head movements real obvious and put both feet down whenever I stop. Also will try and get out to the testing site this weekend and do the circuit.

As always...location is everything. The location you're in is Auckland. You may survive ...just relax and do what they tell you, what you know is correct... and the 6r is yours. Be there in plenty of time. BUT RELAX...

If you'be booked it already it's too late, BUT I have to say I sat my Restricted there, and specifically went to Orewa 2 weeks ago to do my full.

sorry to freak you out, but here's why.

yes, they were friendly blah blah EXCEPT for the arsehole tester who obvioulsy thought it would be FUN to make me do my u-turn down hill on a short, very steep narrow little cul-de-sac called LIMMER PLACE (it must be that one looking at the map).

Made the u-turn by the skin of my teeth, it was a manouvre no biker would ever actually try if they had the choice, or a brain.

When we got back he said with a big smile "that u-turn was a bit tricky eh?"

I asked if anyone had dropped their bike, and he said "yes, a few" and seemed quite happy with himself.

now while doing Def Driving course I re-told this story to driving instructor, he was appalled and said there is just no way he is allowed to that, and LTNZ would crucify him if they knew. he advised to take a photo and send it in. The tester are obliged to be fair, and ensure they don't put you in danger.
In fact the u-turn had to be on FLAT road (like what I had practised on for months) with 500m visibility each way.

Now I didn't bother with the, cos I passed,:banana: but I had failed I probably would have had One News there. :jerry:

SO, I booked my FULL at orewa at (9 am on a school day) and as I suspected, could have fired a bazooka down the back streets where I was riding and not hit anyone or anything and probably 2 bazookas down the road I had to do a u-turn on.

maybe ask what environment the u-turn will be in/on. Might show them you are aware of what the requirements are.

I went for it this morning, was followed by a guy in a little blue Mazda. They gave me a radio and I couldn't hear jack all the entire time. The only way I could gather what he was trying to communicate with me was when I heard the radio beep at the end of what he was saying, which usually meant we were turning so I'd just look in my rear view mirror to watch his indicators, haha.

I pulled off the U turn, it wasn't down Limmer Place although I did go check that out yesterday. We also went onto the motorway, with my L plate flapping away in the wind at 100 k's. Besides going the wrong way a few times due to not being able to hear the radio, and a few headcheck/positioning errors, I did well and I passed.

So just glad to have gotten it over and done with! It is nice to now be able to ride on the motorway at 100 kmph with no L plates on and not be doing anything illegal!

Congratulations Graham on passing your test and you must be so happy to finally get rid of the L Plate and to be able to sit on 100ks instead of the pathetic 70 that all learners have do. It's the 2nd best feeling you can have..... (wait till you get your full) and honestly, there is almost no difference in the test.

I did my restricted there, had to do a u-turn somewhere - it was at a cul-de-sac, I remember there was a large pine tree or something there. No-problem with the u-turn.

The instructor was a real wanker, but I still passed no problem. The biggest problem was always looking behind in the mirrors to see which way he wanted me to go. I lost him once - waited up ahead for him - then had to go back but found him eventually. He drove a ford laser or something like that.
