Hello, Bike has been basically sitting since 4th of dec.

No time blah blah, tried to start once before about 2 weeks ago and it wouldn't start. So drew the cage up next to it and jump started it.

Tried to do the same today but with no luck........

Anything I should know......

Would really like to get the damn thing running so I can ride it down to motohaus to be looked at --- just a general health check. But if it doesn't even start :bash:

I have the mechanical knowledge of a :stupid: so please help.........

Do the lights work. ie. does the neutral light light up when you flick the key and pop it in neutral?

Dud fuel - drain your carbs, let a little new fuel flow through then try again.I don't stuff around and hit it with some ether to show it who's boss.

smack it i agree. you are the rider not the bike tell it off, swearing always helps. battery could be crap. try the fuel filter it may be blocked, is fuel getting through? try wearing a skirt. a tutu is good.

Well decided to do some reading:

http://motorcycles.about.com/cs/maintenance/ht/howtojumpstart.htm

I normally always leave the Good Battery vehicle running.

Now read this and said OK. So I should not start the car. Hmmm

Check all ends right....... kill switch off........ choke half way engaged......

So tried it    Bzzzzzzzssssttttt .......... biggest blue spark I've seen. Fucking battery element (soft grey stuff) melts like butter on a hot pan - burn my favourite thumb - bloody metal clamps of the jumper cable burn through the rubber casings on all 4 ends +ve, -ve both batteries.

Atleast my car is ok........ but now I defifuckinetely need a new battery for the bitch of a bike..........

Oh yeah before the lights and all were fine, now after my little guy fawkes extravaganza they're all:thud: no little green neutral, no nothing.

How much would a battery cost for a 94 zzr250 - can you recommend a brand or type, etc

Jesus wept....hope the battery worked like a fuse/cutout. *shudder*. Yuasa batteries are what I've always used if that helps

And before you go to start it, check your oil level, many of my past bikes have refused to start whilst the oil level is below a certain point...

The oil everything is fine... had a complete service about 500ks ago.

Just been sitting still for over a month.

When a battary is deader than dead.... even jumping it wont work as the dead batt sucks all the goodness out of the jumper, which means that theres nothing left for the bike to fire up on.

Ahh it's fixed....... blew the fuse in the starter solenoid thingee.... replaced it and its now fine.......... Big thanks to Devil for coming over, finding and fixing the problem.

Got the fairings back from Grille and Bumper exchange, and will take off to MotoHaus tomorrow to get a quick test done to make sure I don't blow up on Sunday

Have you tried to crash start it? Warning, do not try unless you know what your doing.

If you haven't got it started yet, I can come and take a quick look at it on Saturday morning, at least to check eletricals are working OK..

Yes we did crash start it....... took around 15-20 mins of hobbling along my driveway and then the road.

It now starts fine.

It's off to the doctors tomorrow anyway so no worries :doobey:

All that shagging around trying to sort my charging and starter solenoid problems paid off :D

Justsomeguy: These engines/bikes aren't too keen on sitting around for long periods of time. If you find you cant get out on the bike, at least fire it up weekly and run it for a few minutes. Even some gentle laps of the driveway. Helps stop crap building up inside and keeps the battery a little happier. Even better for the battery is to leave it on a trickle charger.

The reason the bike was sitting around was because I was too busy....... working 70+ hours a week doing ridiculous shifts.

I've since changed jobs and have a lot more time.

I will now be riding as much as I can.

Went to motohaus and got a new clutch lever put on and had them check out the bike.

The bike is pretty ok........

Getting the steering head bearings done tomorrow and having the break fluid bled.

Sometime next week or the week after I'll get the forks completely overhauled and probably get new brake pads........

Then the bike will be MINT

New Tyres, chain, sprockets, head bearings, fully serviced, oil/filter done, brakes done, forks done, ........................ :ride:

I'll be doing some cleaning today and then when I get it back home tomorrow will do some more cleaning and get the fairings back on

All that will then be left is getting the forks done and the break pads changed (they are probably good enough, but hey I don;t like my things to be simply good enough).......... then I'm off to Scenic Drive every day :2thumbsup

ONCE AGAIN THANKS FOR GETTING IT GOING

I was lucky enough to score a bike that had been sitting around a while and the only thing wrong with it was a knackered battery. $120 later and a riders tune from Energy Honda and its like new. One thing I have learned the hard way from the dead battery is that I must get the bike out at least once a week. Even if its just to let it idle in the car port for a while to bring it up to temp. The only downfall of the 1990s CBs are that unlike the 1970s models, they do not have a kick start :argh:

Hmmm........ lot of people told me to buy a CBR250 ........ as they said that was the best 250 with bulletproof mechanicals.

But beggars can't be choosers.......:sweatdrop

But you have to start off somewhere and I think you could have done much worse. :shit:

Some bikes have a cut-out switch on the side-stand to ensure you dont pull away with it down.Usually all the lights will come on and it can take a few seconds to realise what the problem is.Thing is these poxy things are right where loads of crap gets thrown and they can fail, the neutral, ignition lights e.t.c still come on and it can take the un-wary a long time to suss out the fault.Kawasakis seem particularly prone so a lot of people here bypass them.not your problem I know but worth knowing as the bloody things can cause all kinds of problems, particularly when twats like Kawasaki stick them on trail-bikes that people ride through wet mud, puddles, river crossings e.t.c.

Have you ridden scenic drive before? Just in case you haven't, there is a corner on it that likes to eat zzr250's. Both my brother and SpeedDemon have come off on the same corner. It's maybe about half way from the Piha turn off to the Bethels turn off. I guess it's mostly tricky because it starts off wide, then tightens slightly and is quite a long corner. Plus it's going downhill.

Not that I'm superstitious or anything...
I just figured it wouldn't hurt to warn you ;)

Hi Erik,

No I have never ridden on Scenic Drive before.

But I have driven there before. I actually used to go to practice there when I got my car restricted license. And I've been going there for quick blats around once a month at the minimium.

In the past 4 years there were several months where I used to go there around twice a week.

I don't smoke or drink, so when I have some cobwebs to clear......... scenic drive is my medicine. However I don't want to die and I will be taking it very very carefully............

I know the corners you are talking about.

I'M SO SO SORRY TO SEE ANOTHER BIKE IN BANDAGES, LET ALONE ANOTHER ZZR. That bike looks exactly like mine.......

From the pictures I believe that corner is near the Wairau Lodge entrance right? Yup very naughty roads those....... there is this one corner there........ you'll need to be going in the opposite side to what you are facing.... where at speeds of about 70-80 it take nearly 4 seconds to complete..... just goes on and on and on

The slow 25km corner near the house (green one with big brown garage) is a nuisance, then there is this corner near the fire station......... especially when travelling from the henderson side to the Titirangi side.......... almost lost it there before....... was very scary....... driving a front wheel cage............. going too fast........ too much understeer..... went wayyyy wide and right into the other lane......... luckily it was a week night and there was no one coming in the other direction..............:sweatdrop

You know the restaurant Nikau Lodge? Just next to that there is a Y junction....... one leads downslope towards Henderson and the end of scenic drive.... the other the roads are less steep and wider......... on this other on a good day you can easily reach 150 on a few stretches (with excellent visibility, so it's pretty safe)and have a lot of fun........ did all this in a cage though.......... :brick:

But once again very sorry to see that bike........ look forward to seeing you and your bro and all the others in about an hour...........

That's actually two different bikes, see they're on different trialers and stuff.

Anyway, good seeing ya on the ride.

The ZZR250 is a great bike and also has the legendary Kawasaki reliability. Regular oil and filter changes. check valve clearances occaisionally and it'll do you proud.

i have watched a friend crash start his car and then crash it, stupid idiot had the gas push all the way down. I can imagine a bike being flipped very easily in the same manner
