You need 700mls of Motorex Top speed 4T 15W50....thats out of the manual and seems to work for me.
I assume you know how to check the level by removing the "control screw" hiding behind the rear brake lever...you fill the case until oil starts to flow out of this hole.

I use the recommended Motorex Gear Oil (http://www.motorex.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/show/temp/default/path/1-418-443-773-805.htm) because it is cheaper than their equivalent 4T engine oil - I used to use the one full-synth 4T oil for all the bikes, but escalating prices made me look at alternatives - and it is likely a closer match to the job at hand as well.
It feels like it shifts slightly better than 4T engine oil, even after being run for a few hours.

About $6 a litre. I've used it for a couple of years now, no probs. Buy enough and they give you a cool John Deere cap.

A little cheaper than ATF then, any idea what the weight is???
Quite a lot of people seem to use ATF and have done so for years, so thats what I use. Nice and cheap too.

I use Motul but only cause I get it wholesale through a good mate.
Used and abused my engines in my Kart on ATF. Seems to be ok. We never changed our gearbox oil as often as you guys either. And thats also in a 125 engine, on methanol, with no clutch or even a clutch basket! The only cog on that side was to drive the power valve!

Whoaa!! I don't know what manual you are referring to but in my KTM manual, the recommended oil for an 03 KTM 200 EXC is in fact EP 80 weight (Shell and not doubt other brands) - yes, good old fashioned stinky gearbox oil you'd put into a car diff!
The best thing is that it's relatively cheap, at least when compared to oils made in Europe with pictures of motorcycles on the front of the bottle.

Those two viscosity numbers are different ways to measure the same thing based on the intended application, so are equivalent. Indeed Motorex is now badging the Gear Oil as SAE 10W/30 with a specification of API GL-4 SAE 80W/85 !!
So pretty much any 4T engine oil or gear oil is OK; despite the difference listed in my edition of the manual, they are specified pretty much interchangeably. IIRC the only things to avoid are engine oils with "friction modifiers" and "hypoid" gear oils... i.e. the stuff you'd put in your diff.

I can also confirm what Warewolf has said as when he posted I was on the phone to Motul making sure my 2 4L cans of 10w 50 2T transoil where ok. Their office is local Howick.
They are basically the same but measured on two different scales. The old straight scale for the 80w and the later SAE scale for the 10w 50 oils. And as long as you have gl4 or gl3 its for gearboxs. The only thing you will get with car oils is all the additives they put in for cars. Although when I was Karting I did have a Castrol Scientist admit to me, alot of the oils are the same just packaged differently to target different markets.
ATF is just a very light oil still does the same thing. The only reason we as MXer's need to change our oils more regularly is because we have the clutch contaminating the oil with fibres and aluminium particles. Going to steel clutch plates helps with oil preservation greatly as well. It won't go black 1/2 as fast.

As the others have (hopefully) explained, it ain't just numbers...
My Manual says 2004 KTM200EXC on the front cover & it's a nice katoom orange colour, obviously there are different things printed in different manuals.
As regards lubricants, I'm conservative and use factory specified stuff, I've only got to look at the cost of a rebuild to see it as cheap insurance.
