View Full Version : Wairarapa: Motorcycle 1/4 mile sprints

Deano
29th August 2008, 08:30
Cliff Hanger Promotions have scheduled two sprint meetings for the 21st September and 30th November 2008.

More info available on the attached flier.

Or until I can get the flier attached - visit - www.cliffhanger.org.nz

Please refer to the e-mail address for all technical queries.

Marshals and helpers are required if you or someone you know can assist on the day. There should be a free lunch in it for you.

It is quite a bit of fun marshalling - apart from the heat.

PS - ok - I am maxed out with my attachments and cannot upload the flier - any suggestions ?

With your speed last time there was me thinking that cup would be solidly bolted down at your place by now.

For those that haven't seen the other thread I've offered a $25 cash prize to buy beer of choice to whoever wins the 400 title this time.

I've offered an additional prize to Str8 Jacket only, also of $25, and that is if she can break 200 on Koba's VFR.

Deano, presumably I can do this without offending any of your other sponsors?

I have a GSX 400 that might give you a good run for your money.

I have no doubt that I could get passed 200 on kobas 400 but it is his bike and it would only be fair for him to enter it. I strongly doubt that I could beat his speed of 212kmh but I *may* be able to beat his standing quarter time on it. Though Clive did very well in the standings on his CBR400, if I remember rightly!

Deano you never commented on the other point, can you cater for two entries on the one bike? Presumably depends how you stage the runs because don't some people run more than one bike which is a similar issue? I remember a few years ago the Fairbrotherbrothers sharing the same bike out at the East West I think it was.

Don't be put off by any weather forecasts either - it has often been crappy over this side of the hill, and a glorious day in sunny Carterton.

The sprints have been run on a wet road before too. It's wind that is more of an issue.

Hey guys, (and girls)
The technical issues experienced at the event really stuffed with the results recording, preventing proper results being printed throughout the day and stuffing up the certificates and all that.
The information is all there, however because it will have to be all worked out manually it is going to take a bit longer than ideal.
Keep an eye on the website www.cliffhanger.org.nz they will be posted up as soon as possible.
I THINK the organisers are going to lok at posting out certificates but that will also probably take a while.

Good shit to everybody who got out and gave it a go!

Str8jacket cracked the 200 mark she was aiming for with about a 205kph.
Fastest time of the day was the 1507cc Hayabusa at a wee bit over 200mph!

That's about right for events of this type, it's the wee situation where the people who typically enter the event, hardly ever actually help run any events, ie volunteer. Yet most usually find the time to complain...

Agree totally. How about next time instead of going to the pub, maybe ask if there's anything you could do to help make things move along a little faster. I know they were desperately low on volunteers this time, and a few key organisers missing due to other committments. It takes a fair amount of organisation to set up this wee event, mainly done by a small amount of people.

Because of the computer glitch and a few problems with multiple bikes and rider swaps ad the like I can't tell you for sure but around 205ish.
If thats the case it is right on the button for standard.

Correct, they are looking at capping numbers 55 riders was way to many but there is always the worry of turning others away. I know the organisers are looking at capping numbers to a workable ammount and I will have a talk to them about pre- entries.

Driftin' is bang on right on this occasion. Sign on is supposed to conclude at 0900. People were still signing on way after that. Way too many bikes involved. 55 I think. Plenty enough volunteers to make the day happen, the problem is there's no co-ordination. Timing lights........get them sorted early so they're working on time. If the road is closed it stays closed until runs are finished. $60 is a big ask for this kind of wishywashery. I also will not attend again. A sentiment shared with most in the lineup. Shame really as I've always supported the event in the past.

However the marshalls should be applauded again. Patience beyond measure sitting out there all day doing their best.

But me and William both did runs on our RS125 Hondas both equal top speed 199KPH blimmin crazy so so far I still have enough for the New Zealand 125 Record. Driftn and Jimbo are both correct of course, but Monsterbishi also raises a VERY valid point.

Obviously it is personal choice as to whether people help out at the event or not.

But at the end of the day, the organisers (Cliff Hanger Promotions) gain nothing from these events and it is YOU the riders that will miss out if it falls over.

That is the reason I offer to help out - not because of the sprints but there was concern that the hill climb would die....and personally I love competing in that particular event.

If thats the case it is right on the button for standard..

I was one of the riders that entered two bikes:
I filled out two separate forms
Paid two separate entries (i was refunded 1 entry fee later)
I was given two separate numbers
When i went to check my time there was a quetion mark next to my number and the remark "who i this" written next to the time, i cant understand how this got stuffed up.

All said and done i left early but had a great time and would do it again i know how hard it is to organize something like this and im sure it will improve for next time (November).

Thanks to the organisers for what they did get right, i had a fantatic day on both my Ducati and Yamy and meet some great people.

I have spoken to Dina Albrett (committee secretary) and she is disappointed with the few glitches that occurred. Some were outside of the organisers control but the lessons learnt should make for a better sprint on 30th November.

If anyone wants to vlounteer to come over one night this week and help me out then we might get them up faster. At the moment though it is looking like next week at the earliest. suggestion; maybe denote the general area for bike inspections in advance?can't have been easy for the guys doing the scruitineering the way it was. I suspect a lot of us probably turned up well after the 9.00 cutoff which probably wouldn't have helped getting going either.

Heya peoples. Sorry, I am gonna be a bitch BUT..... Can ya'll wait for your results to be posted. I am gonna type them up and send them to LBTW who will then upload them to the site. If we start giving out indiviual results now then we have to do it for everyone.

Oh yeah, sorry..... Im not actually deserving of any prize. Malcolm still holds the 400 cup for 212kph, I only did 205 and I was the only one on a 400 so thanks, but I really dont think its fair! :)

OK, but part of that was the incentive to get you to do 200 so you still win if you want to claim. Life aint meant to be fair, ask Finn.

Isn't the cup handed out each round, is it for life unless someone breaks the record?

Hi,
yes, we had a few problems at our last cliffhanger promotions sprint, something which does NOT normally happen. We did NOT have anywhere enough helpers/marshals on the day, many of them hadn't helped before, we thank them all. riders know that they have to get there early for sign on and the scrutineers hadn't done this before either. Please do not let this put you off coming to our events as some of the messages I have read have been from riders who have been been before.
I have asked that unhappy riders contact me so we can discuss issues they have raised, but so far none have taken me up on this offer.
It isn't too late to do so.

I've been informed by the organisers that they will be limiting the number of entries to 45 in a hope it will speed things up.

I am keen to help out so long as ()we do get a feed and water. More importantly an actual lunch break. I for one don't want to be stuck at the other end of the track for the whole day not knowing what is going on.:angry2:.

ummmm......forgive me if I sound harsh...but honestly, just because their were a few probs at the last 'sprints' I dont think people should be so negative.

Cliffhanger organizers have run many of these events and these have run smoothly with only the odd minor expected hiccups. I think they do a great job in providing us with an event of this caliber. And many will concur that they have had LOADS of fun blasting their bikes at the Sprints!

This crew put a lot of effort into running such events. Sport is sport! so at the end of the day it can only be expected for occasional glitches to happen. As with any large organized event.

If people dont support these runs they will all eventually die off. And then you will have something to complain about.

Those people complaining on this forum should try to understand that not all in life can run as it should. If you helped on the day then GREAT EFFORT I say! If you competed and were disapointed? then just accept that things can go wrong and move on!

Rant over:sunny:

My only complaint about the Cliffhanger Sprints is that I moved 600km away.

I agree with Flame, it's a non-profit organisation that put on a fun day for any motorcyclists that turn up on the day. If you think there's no value in it for your dollar then don't enter. I found carrying a Camelback helped deal with the time spent cooking between runs, Mmmm warm water!.

It's pretty good value for money really when you think Mr Plod charges $120 for doing just 119km/hr. That's another story...

Could do it if 1 rider did both runs straight away in the flying !
Not 100 % sure how this one will be run, if everyone does one direction it makes it hard to get back to ya second bike !

Deano
16th November 2008, 18:04
Do the flying in one direction, then be first to do a standing on the return trip, then take the next right off Dalefield Road, then right, then right again and your back in the pits and can swap bikes to head back to the top for a flying. In theory anyway lol

Ahh, Right so that was you on the 900?
Nice bike and good work!
Can't wait to see it with a turbo on!

I was one of the guys at the timing desk.

Anyway, the day seemed to run much better than the last few, the worst we had to deal with at the timing desk were a few problems caused by a ham-fisted operator (me) but any "issues" were easy enough to work around.

Great day out and it was awesome to watch you guys, there were some impressive performances today but I will let you all tell your own stories about them. :2thumbsup
