<headline>Marlboro man Stoner under fire</headline>
<byline>Cathy O'Leary</byline><date> - from SMH.com</date>
AUSTRALIA'S world MotoGP champion and Young Australian of the Year, Casey Stoner, is being named and shamed in an aggressive campaign by anti-smoking groups which have labelled him as a "high-speed drug pusher."
They said images of the 22-year-old non-smoker and his bike covered in logos of Marlboro cigarettes while racing and in the media are sending the wrong message to his fans, particularly impressionable young children.
The anti-tobacco group Action on Smoking and Health, the youth health project Smarter than Smoking and the Australian Network on Young People and Tobacco have written to Stoner and his management at Ducati calling on him to relinquish his sponsorship deal with tobacco giant Philip Morris.
The groups claim he is being used as a "Marlboro Man" to promote addictive, lethal products, and although tobacco sponsorship and advertising is banned in Australia, images featuring him plastered in tobacco logos can be readily seen in the media.
They have also written to the National Australia Day Council saying they are concerned that its Young Australian of the Year is actively promoting smoking to the rest of the world.
But in an emailed response last week, Stoner said that while he understood their views and agreed that children should not smoke, he did not believe Philip Morris's sponsorship of Ducati was aimed at young people.
"At the same time I firmly believe that every adult human being should retain the right to make his or her own decisions in life, whether correct or not," he said.
But the Smarter than Smoking co-ordinator, Fiona Phillips, said Stoner's association with Philip Morris significantly undermined efforts in Australia to stop young people from taking up smoking.
And the ASH chief executive, Anne Jones, rejected the claim that Philip Morris did not encourage children to smoke, accusing it of spending huge amounts to attract new smokers, most of whom were children.
"Casey Stoner is the new Marlboro Man and while he might have a lucrative contract with his sponsor, as a champion he is a role model to children and young people worldwide and he's being exploited as a high-speed drug pusher," she said.
Philip Morris in Australia declined to comment and Stoner's management in Italy could not be reached for comment.

Prolly wrong, but I stuck this in general on purpose.
"Philip Morris in Australia declined to comment" - but I'm sure KB can.

I see these people as a threat. Without Mr Morris' money, there is no Ducati Corse. Period. They will die (as we know them). Threats are to be removed.
Ahhh, in a perfect world...if you see an anti smoking campaigner, smash them in the face with your helmet, and then continue beating them until they're unconscious. However, your work is not finished. Go visit them in hospital, make sure they're well aware that continuing to fuck with racing sponsorship will lead to further beatings.

People in glass houses Big Dave.....KR is flaunting a picture of Rhys Jones in a Marlboro series Tee shirt in your latest issue.
I was deeply troubled by the sight and memories associated with that; mine got thrown out by an over enthusiastic parent when it became deemed a "rag".
I am emotionally scared and demand Vege puts me on his free subscription list for at least a year.
Apart from that, the PC brigade can take a hike, poor Caseys being beaten up enough by Valentino at the moment...:bash:

Some people need to remove the stick from their arse... Marlboro has sponsored motorsport champions for fricken ages. At least then some of all the blood(y) money made by the tobacco companies are being put to a good use.
Hell it's people's own lives, let them live whichever way they want to. I only object to having to pay the hospital bill when they have to be treated for cancer. That and having to endure their fumes when I go about my daily business.
Good on Casey!

I think that the fact he doesn't smoke sends a far stronger message to his fans then the tobacco company sponsorship does.

You know how some of your mates you wish would stop sending you lame gags?
Rhys's are always GOLD.
On Saturday afternoon I was sitting in my deck chair, drinking beer and
watching my wife mow the lawn. The neighbour, a lady from across the street,
was so outraged that she came over and shouted at me, "You should be
hung!"
I took a sip from my can of Beck's German Beer, wiped the cold foam
from my lips, lifted my darkened Ray Ban sunglasses and stared directly
into the eyes of this irritating neighbor, and calmly replied, "I am.
That's why she cuts the grass."

Tell the fat hairy lesbians to go watch "Thank You For Smoking" and remind themselves (again) that they've been pwned by the Tobacco industry. 1/5th of the world's population is currently aspiring to be a regular smoker and Casey is the man for the job.

Yes - I apologise.
Do you know how much it rained in the fortnight before that mag came out. I wanted a nice pic with a nice bike and nice backdrop.
I had to wait till the rain stopped long enough to put my camera on the front steps and even then it was a rush before it drowned.
An hour before deadline.
Still a mint Jacket.

Don't apologise to me mate... Apologise to your wife for making her mow a wet lawn - and the stubble too if she's the kind of woman that minds that ;)

I submitted another 100 words about the Triumph Kevlar Jeans too.
They are expensive - more than draggins I think, and I don't have any safety data, but they are more comfy than any others I've used by a commensurate amount.
No tobacco sponsors were harmed in this diversion.

What a bunch of wankers saying that about Stoner. He is such a talented rider and so what if Marlboro are his sponsors that doesnt mean that he is making the younger generation smoke as most of them do it not thru what is advertised on the fairings of these bikes that are raced all over the world but more thru the ones the hang around with.

First off I must say I am an ex smoker. I have no problem with any tobacco companies spending their ill gotten gains on sport or any form of sponsorship.
Hell why not??.
As Grubb says get the anti smoking group to sponsor him. YEAH RIGHT!!!
They are full of shit trying to tell people how to go about their lives but they are never there saying "you give up the tobacco company sponsorship and we will pick up the tab."
Not fucking likely!!! why don't they just piss off and leave the guy to get on with his life without laying a guilt trip on him about where his money is coming from.
They make me want to puke.!! bleeding heart do gooders.
FUCK OFF AND MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!

Oh and smokers that think 1st hand smoke is better than 2nd hand smoke because it goes through a filter.. I've met a few that genuinely believe that!

No I mean they said they'd rather smoke than breath second hand smoke, because that way they have a filter.. somehow breathing it out unfilters it? I don't know, they weren't the brightest of people..
As for the hating smokers bit, it's mostly cause I have to put up with that exact situation with my Dad EVERY day.
