View Full Version : Coromandel Loop caution

To get a break from painting late yesterday afternoon, I rode over to Whitianga from Coromandel. Despite there having been no rain for a few days, there was water across the road in a few spots on the eastern side of the big hill just outside Coromandel town. Most of them are no big deal, quite narrow and just seepage from recent slips. However, about half way up right on a bend, there's a wider strip with actual running water and this is VERY slimy. With all the slips in that area, some underground water courses may have changed direction so some new drainage might be required. For anyone doing the Loop this weekend, be warned! Also, it's the Whitianga Scallop Festival, so watch out for an increased presence of the Highway Patrol but more importantly; idiots in cages.

Have a safe weekend,

Cheers,

Geoff

There's enough KB'ers that know:yes:

The mussel beds are just out back too and the snapper that hang about there are pretty darned nice - catch them from our kayaks!

Thanks for the heads up mate.
Where exactly.... the Coro side of the hill or the Whitianga side and is it a blind corner or do you get plenty of warning?

Good point Beyond. We will be heading up this Sunday, nice to know where the potential hazards are.

Hi Paul - as I said, EASTERN side (i.e., The Whitianga side, haha). At the speed you travel, it could be on a 5 km straight and you wouldn't get any warning:rolleyes:. No, you don't get a lot of warning as it's half way through a tight bend, but you do get enough. There's enough room to take an inventive line and keep the bike reasonably upright. Call in for coffee if you're on schedule! I see you're stuffed for ripping up the western side of the Firth with the road being blocked at Kawakawa Bay.

Take care,

Geoff

P.S, For any Saturday riders, it's pi**ing down up here at the moment although it's forecast to clear.
