GSVR

This ride is open to anyone who reads this. The ride will be slow and more about enjoying the day and open spaces. The route will be scenic and include a short afternoon tea break. Should all be over by 4-5pm. I plan on doing several of these over the next few weeks to make some observations.

The 1st ride will leave from the Ashhurst service station at 1pm sharp on Sunday the 30th August (Tomorrow). All rides will be Sunday afternoons.

The format of this ride:

Every participent turns up at the service station start point and fills their bikes tank and zero their trip meter. The bikes details and odometer is recorded.

We then go on the ride which will be under 200kms so well within the range of most bikes.
At the end of the ride each bike is again filled up and the fuel useage and km/litre calculated. Also the odometer readings can be compared since all bikes should have covered the same distance.

Results are then posted on KB for all to ponder.

Hope some of you riders that are put off by the longer touring bike rides turn up. Would be great to see some really old classics too!

Any questions post here or PM.

What a fantastic idea. I have wondered-since I am in the market for a bike-how economical other breeds of bikes are. I can't make tomorrow but keen for the next one.:Punk: Supposed to be a cracker day too damn it:angry::bye:
Enjoy

Can't make tomorrow's run - gonna do that charity ride over in Wanganui, but will try to make one. Concours's current average economy is around 5.8L/100km and has used as little as 5.5 at times. VTR's is around 6.6L/100km (haven't ridden it much and it does like to play up).

Hopefully will get the chance to run them both against the crowds. Anyone got a big single?

cool idea, I was thinking the same. Can't make it - too far away, but FYI in touring mode, my GT650R gets about 350km on 15 litres of high octane - add that to your results if you want. 4.3 L/100km, or 66 mpg.

Have fun!

Would love to come, but as I told everyone at dinner tonight, I'm going to be working all day tomorrow. I'll hopefully join in another one in the future.

BTW I can post my spreadsheet of virtually every fill of petrol I've given my bike since I bought it last November, if you like. Not that I'm a nerd or anything. :) :)

Great day for riding with Bluebird conditions over the central north island. I'm off to check out the classic bike meeting at Manfeild (CMRR) this morning and will be at Ashhurst Mobil from 12.45pm. Won't be too dissapointed if no one shows like how long has it been since we've had a Sunday this good!

Three bikes turned up today. Me on the SV650, Polly on the Hayabusa 1300R, and Ferris on the Triumph 1050 Speed Triple. We all filled up at Mobil Ashhurst and took Speedo readings as well as zeroed trip meters. We all run 95 octane. Ride was mainly twisties with occasional straight roads. Pace was relaxed and enjoyable but still stimulating. Ride covered just over 200km when we stopped at Mobil Manfield to fill again.

There are some explainations at this point to explain some of the odometer differences.
Pollys Hayabusa has non standard gearing which makes his speedo read around 6% over. I have a 70 section front (60 is standard) so my speedo reads slightly under.

GSVR,Suzuki SV650, 199.4 km, 10.32 litres.
Ferris, Triumph Speed Triple 1050, 205.2 km, 12.63 litres.
Polly , Suzuki Hayabusa 1300, 223km, 14.18 litres.

I was very happy with the consumpion on the SV. I didn't work the gearbox as much as I normally would and probably saved a few litres of fuel.

Because the distance covered is so close to 200 km you can get the litres per 100km by dividing the fuel usage by 2. eg the SV is around 5.15 the Triumph 6.3 and Busa 7.1.

Thanks to Polly and Ferris for turning up and Polly for shouting the beers at the Station Hotel. Good to check out a couple of different roads even if one turned to gravel.

Missed you guys by 10 mins or so,arrived at 1.10pm or so,was delayed due to some idiot who put fuel cock on prime as bike hadn't been started for a while, then shot up town to see 86,chanceyy and rob away.Went home to chuck on leathers, headed off and just prior to Ashhurst splutter and thought wtf, checked fuel cock and still on prime.Doh flicked it to proper place and away we went.

Wasn't too worried as we decided to go around the track and went through to Mangatoinoka for coffee and toasted sammies nice too, then back to town, was a good ride, man those wind towers are impressive up close, met a couple half way along track from Bulls area.

Full throttle and it drinks fuel. In saying that, I was running a fuel map that had me getting 4.6ltr/100km at 100kph. My current map shows 5.5ltr/100km at the same speed yet the bike runs way better. I've still yet to load the big HP map which is supposed to produce 130+rwhp. I need a bloody laptop out in the shed, cause it's a pain in the arse having to cart my PC out there everytime I want to fiddle and no, not :tugger:

Good idea guys. I'm afraid I'm like 98tls, I've kept a spreadsheet of every fill for the last 2 yrs.

My 2000 CBR600 gets
91 Octane (1%) - 6.10l/100k (16.38km/l or 46.27mpg) tank range 286kms
95 Octane (72%) - 5.39L/100k (18.42km/L or 52.68mpg) tank range 322kms
98 Octane (27%) - 5.05L/100k (19.82km/L or 56mpg) tank range 347kms

On 95 I get 9.95km/$ and on 98 I get 10.7km/$ so running 98 is MORE economical because it delivers better power and requires less throttle opening.

You're definitely not the only one. Have never really compared different fuels - might be a good idea to try it on the Honda seeing as she likes gas and has a smaller range than the Connie.

Thanks Sandra but I'm really only interested in comparing results head to head as then everyones done exactly the same hills, conditions etc.

That and my own experiments with riding style etc.

Just bit of fun. I don't look at manufacters figures as they can be very misleading and open to rigging like their weights are...

Backroads and make it different each way. Take in the Gladstone cliffhanger road on the way there or back. On the way back is probably better as you ride it the right way.

Just looking at the map it may end up being closer to 250 KM

Yes it went OK.
I did 3 standing quater mile runs, 11.2 then 10.9 then 9.92. The first two had loads of wheel spin through the first 3 gears, for last one I let the tyre down to 20psi and did a short burn out before the run, it still had some wheel spin so it should go a bit quiker yet. On the flying quarter it only did 270km ( speedo said 300km ) due to being 1 tooth down on the front with the gearing. Probably will go back to the next meeting with standard gearing back on, and the Suzuki top gear timing retard disabled.

It was a good day out, and a good ride back with the some of the Manawatu Riders.

Argh but you are running 98 so your figures may be distorted. Maybe the figures should read $ /100KM. I should do 98 next time.

I reacon the biggest upset there was Bonez. I was expecting to see much better figures. Could be he has a worn needle in his carb!

As for the Sprints if you look at the thread theres a bit of fall out going on over the number of entries. You may well find the next ones got an entry cap which would mean getting an entry in or risk missing out.

I'll give 95/98 a go next time just for fun.

FI is the way to go due to its better metering of fuel. There's been a 20 year advancement in technology afterall. Impressed with the wee 4s fuel usage.

I only tried it because I saw that Al's Tiger was getting 5.15lt/100km on 98 and I thought it may be a well kept secret. I guess the Tiger is a little more aerodynamic than mine. Fuel maps play a big part too and the one I'm running is not the most economical, however I like instant grunt......and that I have!

Would be interesting to calibrate it though, see where it's at ! Sure as hell were no nanas out there today haha went looking for corners and Heidi had her head pressed to the back of mine through most of em (probably snoozing knowing her lol) If mine does callibrate up to be correct, that map of yours will sure as hell be a thirsty one !
Was running 95 today but have to say i dont seem to notice bugger all difference in power between 98, 95 and 91 only in the pocket lol they recon the higher octane is only good for the older bikes that may preignight !
Might do a calibrate tommorra (and just try and remember to do another change at 10000 haha) just for the hell of it, but only for a short trip from one gas station to the next down SH1 Otaki to plimerton or sommit !

I might disconnect the battery and have a go myself. Most maps I've tried seem to have a lean area around 4000-5000rpm (cruise region) and are quite economical, but seem to lack instant throttle response. I'll talk to Kerry Wallis about it and see what he reckons, after all it's his map.

Yep thought that was you. You got better mileage than the SV then but we did alot of riding in lower gears.Wasn't really expecting anyone to show at such short notice but Ferris turned up!

Good ride with no precipitation worth mentioning. Over the track right at Mangamaire in search of a road inland from the highway. Rode till we hit gravel. Asked a farmer on the way back and its about 6kms of gravel to the highway. Crossed the highway and rode to Alfredton then hooked onto 52 to Pongaroa for a beer at the local then home through Makauri Gorge.
Meet Horse on the Glide just before Mangatinoka and had a quick chat. Then on to Woodville and over the Saddle to gas up at Ashhurst.

Just under 200kms all up.

Ferris on 95 did 13.50 litres 6.75l/100km
