EDSON, Alta. - A 34-year-old Alberta man was handed a $12,000 speeding fine this week after police caught him roaring down the highway at 263 kilometres per hour - more than twice the posted speed limit.

On May 1, a police officer noticed the man speeding on a Honda motorcycle on a stretch of Highway 16, between Edson and Hinton, Alta., with a 110 km/h speed limit. The officer gave chase, but was unable to match his speed, said Sgt. Ron Lyons with the RCMP.

The same officer later spotted the motorcycle in Hinton, which is about 280 kilometres west of Edmonton. The Edson Traffic Court handed down the fine Aug. 27.

The driver, a Hinton resident, struck a deal with the Crown prosecutor that allowed him to keep his licence in exchange for the high fine, said Lyons.

"I've never seen a fine like that before," said Lyons. "A fine of $1,000 is usually a lot."

Earlier this summer, the Hinton Traffic Court slapped an $8,500 fine on a 25-year-old Prince George, B.C., man for driving 206 km/h on the same stretch of highway.

Lyons said he believed that man also struck a deal with the prosecutor to keep his licence.

He attributed the new trend in high fines to a fresh face at the local traffic courts.

"There's a new Crown prosecutor here who is working the high-fine angle, to make a point to the drivers that speed does cause injuries and death on highways and it's unacceptable," said Lyons.

The maximum fine for speeding in the province is $25,000, he added

expensive blat!

Tui's anyone?.....YEAH RIGHT!!!!

Bloody great way of gathering revenue I reckon. How the fuck do they prove it was the guy riding the bike when they only caught up with the bike later on? Sounds dodgy to me...but there ya go.

If you`re that financialy well off in that $12000 is like no big deal, then good on him.
An easy way out to keep your licence in that case.
I know I`ve got a pay rise due in September...:msn-wink:

"the drivers that speed does cause injuries and death on highways and it's unacceptable," said Lyons.

Obviously, in these two cases, there was no injury or death.
Perhaps "speed kills" is a lie...

Ps you don't have to thrash a 'Busa to do 250kmh's , though thats the fastest I've had it at , must apologise but it was a long straight and perfect conditions. Great day , great Bike and fun all round, you had to be there.

Hey you are not the only on to give your bike a bit of whelly. I know a certain young man who has had his Fazer 600 upto 149mph (240kmp) with a pillion and all the gubbins on the bike. How do you know the manufacturers aren't lying about top speeds if you don't it out at least once?:devil2:

Luckily no rozzas and nothing like $25,000 fines here but I wouldn't bet on that not happening in the near future. They love making revenue (sorry making the roads safer) of motorists here.

ive done 240 on a gpz 1000, had bent forks and brake discs. Theoretically the bike tops 250, and at 240 it still had some go left in it! but i lost my nerve lol, not much between the road and you. Gotta play it safe aye.

Since then i've got myself a helmet but i sold the bike.

So what's the fine / worst case scenario for a Kiwi doing 200+kph???

I've always thought it was loss of license and a possible criminal conviction?

subtract a pillion, but add full givi luggage, laden up, and I did that speed on a HONDA :woohoo:

Definitely loss of license (year or more), incredibly likely a dangerous driving charge, which carries (inc loss of lic) high penalties of fines and possible jail.

However, I know of someone who was very close to topping out a 1L sportbike (as in, close to 3x the limit), picked up on radar, pulled over, and the cop was... shocked... and after nicely asking, it was written much lower.

If they had that here, I wonder how much more it would be for the highest I have gone (and a cop picked me up) :sweatdrop

$12,000 ummph... petty cash.

I pay way more than that every year in productivity fines, just for having a job.

I still have no idea how that was achieved.

No idea.

I suspect that certain people were born with mystical powers that let them just get away with shit.

Don't look to me for an answer, until less than a month ago, I had never had a warning, only tickets for exactly why they pulled me up (or more).

Finally got a warning a little while ago from a couple of young general duties, who said they were struggling to read my plate. They were happy for me to continue onto work and clean it (they got some of the heavy muck off) and I cleaned it then...

Made a nice difference...

And I guess, in Hindsight I was a bit silly ( only a bit ) however no excuses and I humbly apologise but here's my ' excuse '

I was in a good mood, only had my pretty red Hayabusa a month after reading how good they were for years, 3. The road is magic, long straight, wide and fast, about 6km long.

And 4. For those that don't know about the reeal fast bike it only takes a few seconds to wind it on and the speedo simply heads north, problem ? wind off and it comes down just as quick due to the compression factor, some brakes might help as well :-)

It was a 20 second exercise...but I guess thats how long it takes a tractor to pull out with a trailer on the back....then I hit the black ice at 130....

Yanosh
1st September 2008, 19:01
lesson learnt, don't do 130 (yet alone more) in conditions where you might find black ice...

Armitage Shanks

Timeout, if you know that piece of road you'd appreciate what my front wheel did on the black ice on the Rakaia to Leeston straight just over the bridge , wow ! just a jiggle and ....past the ice then back on the gas, 8kms of straight road, suns shining , lets go...what a day.....150-160.....round the bend at 140 ...back to 5th, roll it on, slow down to 100 ...80...60, for the tractor, 3rd gear up to 120 then straight roads ahead and warm air, wind it on 4th and 5th 190 and hold it to ......240 on the clock... must say it was a great ride and there was plenty more . No apologies for going too fast, was it 'Talk Talk ' that did the ' Life's what you make it ' song ?
