View Full Version : Rimutaka Hill claims another bike. Ripped in half!

I came across another bike crash on the Hill today, about 2.30pm heading up from Wgtn side. A near new RSV in two pieces.

Firstly, I hope the Rider is OK and best wishes for a speedy recovery. I heard from some other Riders that the Rider was up and walking but looking very pale. I wouldn't post this if I thought he was seriously hurt or anything. The Ambo was leaving when I turned up.

Anyone heading up watch out for the bike's oil spill on the 2nd right hander as you commence the hill climb.

Only last week - not much further up the hill, I helped pick up a shiny new Harley where the Rider had gone over the Arco.

Seeing another possibly similar crash has happened today, not far from where I binned my VTR1000 into the gorse years ago, had me wondering just what is the toll of bikes damaged/written off on this 25 minute crossing over the years? Wasn't too many months ago a Speed Triple had it's front end ripped off (forks and wheel) just like today. Thank goodness I can't recall anyone dying on the Rimutaka hill.

A sobbering sight to come around a bend and see two forks and the front wheel jammed under the armco and no bike attached? The rest of the bike was further up the road on the other side of the road.

Personally I suspect loss of traction entering or exiting bends is the major cause of bikes crashing on this Hill. Often it's diesel/oil/stock truck spillage, damp roads, cold tyres or simply entering too hot, hitting the brakes and front or back wheel goes west.

Sorry about today's Rider, get well, as the road is actually in mint condition and fantastic to ride..ah, energetically, at the moment.

Take care out there. We are in for a long hot summer, lets makes the most of it.

A few of the Manawatu riders came across it too, heading out to tea with them now, so no doubt they will fill in the blanks for me
Speedy recovery to the rider

That wee stretch of road is treated like a race track...if only they'd put a tunnel through then it could become a race track :)

I've heard of a rider a few years back that was heading into a right hander, his head over the centre line and had it collected by a truck. Not sure how much truth is in it but that was supposedly a fatality.

Personally, I suspect it's because motorcyclists like to use it as a racetrack.

Had the odd moment up there in the past,i i spent many days going up over in fact so many i guess i got cocky which as we all know can spell disaster.

Talking about stock truck effluent and diesel on corners some mad drifters have been carving up the Catlins. I was coming home from Scumdog's hoose today and every right hander had a scattering of gravel pushed out from the oncoming lane. Some hoon going from Papatowai to Owaka must have been cutting every corner and spreading death traps on the road.

According to Katman I'm so inexperienced and fast that I should have died about 20 times....I wonder what went wrong?

:Pokey:

That was a mate of mine many years ago. Belonged to the same bike club. His face is one of the reasons I prefer to wear contacts when riding. His helmet rotated over his head and the nose rests gouged two furrows through his skull.

Hope the rider is ok and the bike is insured

The hill (especially on a windy day on the northern side of the summit)commands respect.

My only road bin was up there. New RG150 - with the shitty stock tyres on it it just started to rain and the road (as I discovered) was as slick as it looked...new to riding myself and in the passing lane going round a car on a long corner...all spelled hit the deck for me!

I remember years back a dude on a harley was killed coming down the southside..don't know the details just know that he didn't live to tell the story very sad. Gives me the willies everytime I ride it YET everytime I learn something and downhill riding is my archilles heel so more practise required!

25 Minutes!!!! You'd struggle to do it that slow with a coffee stop.

As for people dying, I know of only one, one I thought you'd remember although I'm pretty sure not first hand. I won't go into details, relatives are around.

Yeah I think most of us have paid the rent on that hill at some stage. Speedy recovery to the rider. Those first few corners are infamous for tripping up over exuberant riders. Especially in Winter.

We spotted that severed Aprilia today too. "Completely fucked" would be a fair description of it. Looks like a serious contact with the Armco happened at some stage, not to mention with the bank on the other side. If the rider is up and about, then he is a very lucky chap.

It surprises me how often riders overcook those early corners on the Wellington side.

Good to hear the rider is OK, this road deserves alot more respect than it is offten given, Diesle spills, stock effluent, cold damp road, are all part and passel of this road, it aint where you want to find out where your ability doesnt match your ego & bravado.

Shhhh, you can't say that. It sounds like you're attributing people's accidents to personal mistakes!

Yes Fucked would be the right term to use, I was right behind him when he lost traction. This guy is an extremely experienced rider and rides that hill every week, knows it like the back of his hand.
We don't know exactly what happened, I walked down the road after the traffic left and there is a shiny spot right where the tyre marks started.
I can tell you it's not a nice sight to come out of a corner and find your mates bike spread across the road.
I must say I've never seen forks shear off like that it was rather disturbing to see!!
He's ok just came home after a marathon waiting session at Hutt hospital all bruising and a few cuts.
He was very lucky!
I'd like to say thanks to the Police and the Ambos they were great and the truck driver who parked his truck up so no fuckwits would clean anybody out, your a legend bro!!
Just got to wait for insurance then we'll get another bike under him!!!

Good to hear mate, good to hear.

I have attended several crashes involving bikes up there, thankfully none of which have been fatal. One a year or so back chopped a Ducati in half, Rider was ok bar a few minor sore bits.

Those of you who like to rub each others backs and go "there, there" when someone has an accident through over exuberanance and out-riding their ability...

But there was a shiny spot on the road! It wasn't the very experienced rider's fault!

experienced does not mean blameless. experienced riders are aware of road conditions. if they miss things they could have seen... whose fault is it.

Glad rider is ok, and well done:clap: Greyham.
Yesterday(saturday 30th), my sister and her family helped a rider down, on the Road to Akaroa near Hilltop.
He got unlucky on :cold:grit on the road. Apparently ended up over a bank. According to her, he has suspected broken ribs:gob:. I hope he is ok:hug:, and i wonder who it may have been....

This thread was started about someone that had a nasty off on the Taka's, there is only Greyham, Guitana and myself who know who he is, and a resonable idea of what happened. Surely a few "best wishes" and a "poor bugger" are appropriate not a full on - lets guess about everything we know nothing about and while we are at it lets swing our handbags! grow up for fucks sake. The guy is a live and very lucky end of story, move on.

I totally agree ... the hill is a monster at times, and really sitting back and guessing is not helping anyone. I am so glad your mate walked away - like Chancey said ... buy a lotto ticket ... :)

Once again good to hear your mate is ok and good on you too for not outting him - no one really needs to know WHO he is unless they are related or friends.

On the note of your comment about handbag slinging...Welcome to KB...where arseholes abound. You'll see the same two making shit arsed comments on threads like this all the time..just ignore them for they will be back and are best just ignored for any comments to them will just fuel their bullshit further.

Jinxed maybe.

I had a time in my life where I seemed to come across all sorts of misfortune - car crashes, bike crashes, and one case of a person having a seizure on the footpath and falling down and banging his head! That last one really freaked me out and I finally did a comprehensive first aid course. I haven't come across one single incident since I completed the course.

Explain that, will you?

Two of us picked it up. Man they are heavy metal. It looked quite rideable to me. Foot levers a bit bent, not many scratches on it. Surprised how such a heavy bike could come out of an armco hit followed by a slide into a fence post-that it uprooted, yet come out with minor damage. Well at a glance it seemed minor. I helped his mates carry him back over the armco and lay him on the road. He seemed to be in a state of shock and damn sore.
