A guy I know is selling a 1996 Hornet 250 with 31,000km on the clock. I need to know what a fair price for that bike would be - I've tried a bit of research online but can't find a comparable bike of that age with a similar milage.

What would you pay?

$2000-3000. The bike while is low k's is 12 years old. $4000 can get you a bike with half the k's and years if you look hard enough.

$4000 to $4500 depending on overall condition.
Maybe less if it needs tyres, rego, wof, battery, etc.

Thanks guys - bit of a crap question I know, but this does give me something to go off.

He's now said he wanted 3000, but ontop of that it needs registering and a new battery. It's been sitting in a garage for about a year, so he's having a mechanic come over and give it the once over.

If its mechanically sound and goes, that will be a pretty good price for a little ol'hornet! A bargain actually

But like anything else, do your due diligence ... Hornets are reliable, tough little bikes and can take a fair bit of abuse. Keep us informed of developments in this! Any questions you can flick me a PM ...

Will do. The mechanic will let me know what the score is, if it's a green light I will get it.

I'm quite excited actually, I've seen some of the mods that you guys have done and it looks like a great bike to customise.

The first problem I will have if I buy it is the seat height. I sat on that Hornet a few weeks ago and it was slightly low for my lanky legs, especially in the gear shifting department. Can you get higher seats over here, or is there an upholster company that could add in some extra layers of foam?

Carefull there mate, not sure if there is anything can be done in that dept. Its the old story of don't get trapped buying the first one ya look at ! You might be more suited on a cruiser with them legs of yours !

Eh? No, crusiers are for shortarses :D

The 250 Hornet can't be too bad, GiJoe1313 is a giant of a man but he's done some fairly excessive mileage on his. If you want to spend some money, check these guys out: http://www.trimit.co.nz/

It's possible, though, to shift pegs and gearshift/brake linkages around if you really want to. Only thing is reduced ground clearance through the twisties.

Since it's a 250, you can expect to pay approximately one million dollars for it.
