Hmmm mines a tricky one - I was very briefly born in Australia while my parents were there. Never really lived there so I don't count myself Australian in any way, which is why I'll put my vote in for UK instead. I'm actually Scottish, but my parents travelled around a bit - so I've lived in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Scotland and England before moving to New Zealand 13 years ago.

But anyway, Sawubona. Unjani?

Edit: But I could be wrong because it is many years since I had to learn Zulu, and I can only remember how to say, "hello, how are you, I'm well and you?, I am well too, sit down" because that's how the class greeting went with the teacher at the start of each lesson!

I was a few weeks old when they left. My parents and brother were all born in Scotland, and I was conceived there! But I will admit to having an Australian passport - which I only got because the British Passport Office was on strike at the time. However it came in remarkebly handy for moving to New Zealand - my parents and brother all had to go through the residency thing, whilst I just waltzed into the country!

So, I'm supposed to say stuff about where I came from, or summat?
If my parents were actually my parents (apparently I looked Chinese when I was in the maternity ward, so there may have been a mix-up), I have British, Irish, Scottish (fair bit of that, hence the Scottish name), French, and somewhere maybe even a bit of Spanish (probably why I like olives) genes and stuff. My mother is from Oxford (UK), my dad was a fourth or fifth generation NZer, and his family were from around Nelson area. I was born in Rotorua, lived there and in Canberra, Hamilton, Christchurch, Tauranga, and now D'Auckland. I think I need to go and live in Otago - it speaks to my soul (maybe the Scottish blood or summat....)

What I would like to know is why you're proud to fly a flag that stands (stood) for slavery, and lack of human rights.

Or maybe it's the fact that the Confederates were responsible for over 300,000 US lives being lost.

Ya know, all those great American traditions...

Ixion
30th October 2005, 12:56
Technically (rash though I am correcting a Texan about the War Betwixt the States), they were not "rebels". They were secessionists. The Confederate States position was that each of the constituent states had the right, at any time, to secede from the Union. Having done so, they were of course no longer part of the "United States" and could not be rebels. It was the Yankees who called them rebels. And, the Yankees won, and of course the winner always gets to write the history books.

Some might also think that Messrs Lincoln and Seward had somewhat to do with the 300000 Unionist lives lost (not to mention the half million or so Confederate deaths, military and cvilian); or the sacking and plundering of the South

And, if you want some real examples of slavery and lack of human rights , google on "Pinkerton AND Homestead". Or, for that matter "Waterfront Strike 1951".

The Southern slave owner had at least a financial incentive to see that his slaves were kept alive and healthy. It cost him money to replace them. The bourgois capitalist had no incentive to keep his proletarian slaves alive. It was to his advantage to work them literally to death, whilst starving them, and their wives and children on less than subsistance wages. The Walmart chain today carries on this great tradition.

OMGWTFBBQ, the whole north south thing has grown far beyond just the cival war and slavery. And if you study right, you'll see that slavery was not even a big factor in the cause of the war.

What it is now is showing pride in your heritage and your home. The only state that still takes any of that slavery/war stuff serious is Alabama.

i never did take too much to the whole "yank v. Confederate " thing.. i have kin on both sides of the line..i'm an American.. i consider myself a "buckeye" (Ohio) since i lived there for the majority of my life ( although like i said, i have lived in quite a few states.. nature of the biz i was in at the time..)

Yank / Reb thing just divides an already divided nation even further.. kinda like the Kiwi / Maori thing..just sad at this period in history that we have to sub-divide ourselves even further
