You will have the smaller 16 litre tank. I have the later 19 litre tank that actually holds about 17.7litres which I can get about 296kms out of, not around town though.

Good thread! I've just got a 2003. No owner's manual:doh: Have I got a 16 or 19L tank? I get a bit concerned when the gauge goes down to the last indicator bar. Is that it or does it flash or do anything else when you're really down to the dregs?

The 02 was the first with the 19ltr tank, once the gauage gos to the last bar... think about looking for gas... but it will start to flash when on reserve...

it cost me $30 to fill and its just the standard tank,i guess it must be the smaller tank.i have ridden solely on the open rd yet for a full tank so not sure how much kms ill get when i do that but hopefully close to 200km,i have a bit of a heavy hand too so that doesnt help! i do have two brothers exhausts do you think that might effect my fuel usage? maybe its not jetted to suit? thanks

Thanks - good to know. I hit the last bar at about 170km today and did another 30km before I gassed up (sweating a bit of blood) but only put in about 14L to fill it...

The Motorcycle Fuel Economy Guide (http://www.google.co.nz/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.totalmotorcycle.com%2FMotorcy cleFuelEconomyGuide.htm&ei=jmm6SMrWIYOY6gO57aDNAQ&usg=AFQjCNGvQfxl5Zi23BKngkUMadz8iw4xpg&sig2=l_TZwBenWSP5XDM7fcf64w) lists VTR1000 getting 8 L per 100 km
So it looks like the above figures are about right - except for jc-vtr only getting 130 km per tank. Get a tune up ASAP. Has it been rejetted?
From another fuel economy website, I see that there are quite a few other Hondas that are near the bottom of the list - which BTW is around what a small economy car gets. VTR's are great bikes, I am not trashing them, just pointing out that they are thirsty.

Taking grea care to not dis your bike, but 8L/100km is absurd. I had a 3L skyline that did 10L/100km.
My GT650R does 4.3L/100km

It's all about how you ride.
The difference in fuel consumption between track day riding and cruising is more than double on my vtr. A range of 90km at the track, 200km on the road.

About 180 - 190km..... (Stage 1 Dynojet's, K&N and Two Brothers exhausts).
Doing the transit thingie in Ak..... 70 km/day in rush hour.
Unless your thrashing it could be rich........:eek5:

6.8L/100km is the worst I've done so far (only 3 fills as yet). I bought the bike knowing that they weren't the best luckily my other bike is a bit better (averaging 5.8L/100km over the last 21,000km) as it's the one I do the big miles on. The VTR is a toy...

Yeah, you don't by a vtr for fuel economy, just like you don't buy a hyosung 650 for self esteem.

Whoops had to edit my above post - the Connie is averaging 5.8L/100km not 5! I'd be damn happy with 5!

Fuel economy wasn't part of my thinking when I bought mine.
The best i have gotten is 5.3L/100km although that was being TEC to some L platers. on another ride out to Castle Point and around I sat about 5.9L/100km, I wouldn't like to know what my worst has been though.

You should be fine to make it to the gas station, I got about 56kms out of mine on the flashing light before I ran dry.

Yeah, made it no worries and only put in 14.4L. A bit nerve-wracking having no idea. Should safely be able to go 30-40 eh?

I had a 99 VTR (two bros cans and K&N) and it used to do about 140km on a tank around town and about 160 on the open road. As soon as the red light of doom came on I was petrol station hunting. The first one that came along I filled up. No brand favourites or price choice unless you like walking!

Have to agree with it being nerve racking not knowing exactly how far you can go.
I ran mine dry awhile ago just so I knew how far I could go, from running out I could only get about 17.7 litres in the tank.

Yeah thought of giving that a go myself. It's great once you know you can trust the gauge and have a bit more of an idea on how far you can get on that last little bit...
Just one of the little things you have to learn with a new bike eh?

If you truly want a test to see how far you can go, fill the tank up... reset both your trip metres.... fill jerry can of some description, and carry on your pack rack....
Ride... ride some more... then ride again watch the gauage flash... then reset Trip metre A... and keep riding... till you run out and she starts to cough and splutter...
Trip Metre A will show how far you can go on reserve.
Trip Metre B will show your entire trip distance.
Top up with your jerry can fuel...
Its best probably keep an evenish speed through out the ride.
Remember weather... ie; wind can play a part in your fuel consumption... the w

When I ran mine dry - over the Rimutaka hill, out to Castle Point and most of the way back.
1st - 60kms
2nd - 100kms
3rd - 145kms
4th - 170kms
5th - 205kms
6th - 240kms
Flashing - 296kms
It took about 17.7litres to fill.
Everyones gauge will be different and I am am never exactly the same, the fuel gauge changes lots when you go up or down a hill.

Mixture of riding style - flat out or conservative. Where you are riding hills, plains both... Weather conditions - head wind, tail wind no wind. Riding with or with our luggage etc...
All will make a difference in your fuel consumption. I didn't buy the VTR for fuel economy... I bought because its fun and its a hobby... hobby's are rarely cheap

VTR's are just plain thirsty, especially around town. Dunno what L/100km I was getting, but I got similar mileage to you, which I worked out once was around 28mpg.:shit:

It's the "Orangey-Red LED of Doom" - ignore it at your peril. One day when I had my VTR, I repeatedly ignored it ("I'll just fill up later, at the XYZ station on the way to/home from work...") It started spluttering on the way home, and by the time I cracked a u-turn, it was completely out of gas. Coasted much of the way to the nearest gas station, but the last 100m or so in full leathers, uphill, was a killer. It took 16.3L to fill up, so not only was it empty, but so were the lines, the carbs, etc.

16th July 2010, 18:46
My first records:
13.3L 228km 5.8L/100km
13.5 183 7.3
11.4 144 7.9
13.8 188 7.3
12.5 199 6.3
7.0 99 7.0
7.4 97 7.6
11.9 181 6.6
14.2 170 8.4
11.0 165 6.7
= an average of 7.1L/100KM. Note that most of this is pleasure riding and commuting, the 5.8 outlier was the only one that included any motorway Ks. All of this was directly after an oil change, plugs and an air filter. On an 05 with Scorpion cans, I suspect it might be a touch rich and I haven't had the carbs balanced yet, I'll keep recording and give some more figures in a month or so. Run on 96 or 98 octane.
I've noticed my reserve light can come on quite early, with about 13 or 14 litres used.

Not that bad really guys,The TLS is truly shocking all things considered and the paltry 17l tank doesnt help at all.
