View Full Version : A wee warning to Christchurch riders

In case you don't know the Lyttelton road tunnel has a series of cameras, and has the ability to detect silly antics like overtaking, excessive speed etc through there.

RANT
Hopefully Mr idiot 2 smoker, reg 61Y** who decided to preform this manoeuvre today in front of me will not be to surprised when the ticket turns up in the mail, and for the other genius who took this same action in the morning and found the police car, double yellow lines apply to you as well as the cars.

Yeah, always been there, behind the traffic lights, facing towards the back of you.

The wee turnaround bay/island at the port end, there's an intercom along the the camera there  DAMHIK

That said - the air is terrible in that tunnel at times... You just wanna get out of there.

And it is very tempting to overtake through there - it's not like you lack visibility either. Safer than overtaking many other places around the countryside to be honest.

If you give in to the temptation I suspect it's a better idea to do it going towards Lyttleton than when going towards the checkpoint on the Chch side.

Um nope these idiots overtook in a busy tunnel in small gaps, also have seen the blue uniforms blitzing the Lyttelton side of the tunnel with police in the control room.

I travel through there every day I go to work and know what you mean re the air quality, still having been in the control room I would not run the risk of being silly in there.

only been in it twice [took a wrong turn trying to escape chch, lol.] and it put me off wanting to try it again. ended up having to ride with my hazards going due to being tail gated by a cager.

Oh well, you can do dangerous overtakes everywhere...

All I meant was that the tunnel in and off itself is not a dangerous place to overtake. (As in, when it's not busy.) Stupid maybe, but not dangerous.

You must be looking forward to when the grit is gone - Evans and Dyers are much nicer ways to Lyttleton.

Stupid to the extreme, double yellows all the way through there and cameras to back it up with the ability to issue tickets off the recorded evidence, hence the warning.

Yes will be indeed unfortunately early starts its a no go though that's when all the heavy, oversize or dangerous loads come across normally :(

 Just the same story as the Harley rider who died in there about 15yrs ago racing a jappa coming from the Lyttleton side and managed to shove the hog into the tunnel wall :oi-grr:

Used to be a common event many years ago to see how quickly one could get the red lights flashing through the tunnel

Back then it was the noise that gave it away as there were no cameras then.:innocent:

The tunnel is one place I do everything right. There is just no room for errors and no room for evasion.

Yep we report every offender we see, Time, date and rego . 100% success. No one wants a accident with dg loads going through there. Our last bad one was a funeral director side swiping a trailer and writing his car off.

Not quite - I think it is very worthwhile to point out that big brother is very much watching in the Lyttleton tunnel.

I like my license - however I am an impatient man and have often considered pulling off a quick overtake through there (when clear obviously - I have no desire for a crash in the tunnel).

Umm the whole lower street is covered, and several other areas, oddly there is plenty of signage to state this yet drug users are still silly enough to light up those glass pipes directly under them

Thought the same myself from time to time but I guess the guys in the control room know my bike now and where I work.

your comments have been noted and mentally discarded, perhaps when(if) you ever travel through this tunnel you may remember this, and think oh no don't be silly in here to many cameras.

A tunnel is about the worst possible place to have a crash.

With all the traffic banking up behind you, think about how the emergency services are going to reach you ...

That's easy - just make sure you block BOTH lanes

JMemonic is quite right about this.
Its monitored cause it the main road to the port (the rca is transit not the ccc and its actally a legal motorway) and there is no fire supression system in the tunnel, ie in a tunnel fire everyone dies and the tunnel-port will be closed for ages.
Its not fully camered but most of it is. Its difficult but not impossible for the controllers to work out how fast you are going by timing you between several sets of known points.
Sometimes a lazer operator camps out in the control room and pins your ass that way and I have seen him 3 times in the last 2 years.
If you pass in the tunnel expect a nasty ticket as the controllers have nothing better to do, and I kind of think they enjoy doing it.

Anyway much better fun practicing big back fires instead by flipping your kill switch on and off, helps with tailgaters too!

Thank you for the warning - not one to overtake in the tunnel but I'm sure I've been through there a tad fast.

My timid little brother in his student years, had to drink a jug of beer whilst perched on the roof rack of a Holden Kingswood going through the Lyttelton tunnel at high speed.

He did it and I'm extremely proud of him.

He's now 39 and whilst I'm doing ok, he's a qualified lawyer and doing even better. Go figure
