View Full Version : Motard section...

I've asked the powers that be, about a motard section.. Their advice, start a thread and guage the support.

If there is enough, they'll add one to the list.

So, anyone else think it would be a good idea?

Find info on different bikes, riding styles, tyre info, etc... All in one place instead of spread amongst the sports, adventure, stunting etc...

So if you are interested, PLEASE add your name to the thread...

Discussions with Gav have the section possibly being within the Competitive Riding section, similar to buckets and stunting etc...

http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/ For all thing thumper. Lots of people convert their trail bikes and have the info here....

http://www.supermotojunkie.com/ For all things motard....

I reckon you should get your own section- Motards are a bit the odd child- dirt bikes with road bike bits on them, so some of the gear and go fast bits are pretty specific to them.
See if you can add a poll to be able to put numbers to your idea
Viva le difference!!:)

Yeh, I would say there needs to be one. You would include stuff like the supermotos in them.

Them road bikes are juss speed jockeys dontcha know, wannabe rossi's. The dirt guys can't figure out how to use a road (which they paid for) for the life of them... and we're happy not to blast along at warp speed factor 9, and perhaps enjoy a bit of dirt now and then...

Not sure whether or not we're similar to the dual purpose section tho?

now... who haven't I pissed off/insulted?

AlBundy
1st September 2008, 18:23
It's not a matter of being similar to duals...

The problem is trying to find the info from the scattered posts...

Poll! Mmmm, Now, to figure out how to do a poll...

And any road reliable KTM motard isn't?

The road ones are always heavier and less powerful than the dedicated machines.... Apples and oranges...

For example, the 690 SM is approx 152kg's.... That's a far cry from your bike. Just the same as the DRZ400SM is 'fat' compared to the enduro model... Still only around 135kg's though...

At the first round of the Levels winter series a guy was going around getting all the Motard'ds email addresses. He was talking about a sort of Motard group camp for the Burt Munroe weekend at a country school or something, haven't heard any more yet. But the numbers of motards are getting big down here. 19 at the first round 25 at the second. There were 44 at the Wyndham street race. Seems to be getting a bigger turn out at every meeting.

For a start, it's own section would be good, similar to sports/road, or hogs/cruisers.

If not, then I suppose a sub catagory would suffice. Somewhere where it won't conflict with other sections or create confusion...

Ahhh, and thats where it gets tricky, a motard is surely a race bike and therefore will need a home in the racing section?
Otherwise we already have the Adventure/Dual Purpose Bikes (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=67) forum?
Any racing reports etc should end up in the racing forum, agree? As the sports riders do, track days etc are in the racing section.

I agree, it is tricky. There are a lot of people who have them for road bikes too. There are many with DRZ400SM's, a few with the newer KTM690's etc.
There will also be the dual guys that have 17" wheels for their bikes for motard use.

Therein lies the issue. The info is all over the place.

I think most guys will be happy to just have a central source for all things motard, even if it is in the racing section. It may not all be about racing though...

BUT... The sports/road crowd also have a general chat section....

it's all about what you want to do.

I had the old 640SM a few years ago and for the most part, was rarely passed except on very long straights.

The new smc is smoother, lighter, better handling, has the slipper clutch etc: as a day's sport ride or a hoon bike it's pretty much an R1 beater in all but the open straights. Around the Coromandel, on 22 or over the Rimutakas it'll slay any road bike ridden by the same guy.
as a commuter or a tourer.......well i have a couple of other bikes that are way better

AlBundy

The engine is pretty much the same but with the single pipe it is about 3hp less. The lower weight more than makes that up though and with a few mods it seems close to 70hp is not out of the question.

Mine's still only 1200km old or so and i'm not about to mess with it until i'm sure it won't run too lean and blow. However, once it's loose, i'll get a tune boy or similar and start changing pipes, air filter, remove air box cover etc etc. All the work will be done by the dealer though; i don't want to invalidate my warranty.

First thing to go is the muffler of course; a hoon bike that goes chuff chuff is a joke........or a hondog, yamahahaha or spewzuki

Sounds very good.

I liked the engine of the SM, so if this is similar minus the weight, it can only be heaps more fun.

I actually liked the stealthy sound of the SM. One would be able to play undetected... A little louder yes but not too much actually...

Suppose the suspension would be better though, the SM being a bit more road biased, the SMC more motard...

Mmmm, Gonna have to investigate. Thanks. Sounds like a fun bike.

I've ridden the prestige (basically the smr), the smc and the duke and i prefer the smc on the road by far.
NZ roads being what they are; potholes, gravel, hollows, bumps made by trucks on corners etc; the extra long travel suspension of the smc is my cuppa tea.

mind you, if you're not used to long travel road bikes you'll possibly screw up and crash. The deal is to forget about demon late braking and just chop down a few gears letting the back end and compression drag the speed down then gas it up early on the exit (a single will get on the power way earlier than pretty much any multi without breaking traction).
If you do use the front brakes hard they CAN be awesome but you would be crazy to slam them on (front would dive slamming the fork into itself, loading the front up and lifting the rear wheel off the ground). Best to feed them in carefully at first until the front has compressed then squeeze harder and harder. It helps to know that with the light weight, you can outbrake pretty much any road bike if you have the balls.

Well, I ride one of them DRZ motards and it's a blast in the twisties.... Seriously lacks power though.
But, what you say is true, more the slow in, fast out principle...

Mmmm, rolling stoppies come to mind when you talk about the brakes like that, lol....

i find brake steady into the first half of the corner, then full power out!

try to keep ya speed up as its hard won on a motard

Full power out...

Easier with only 35-40hp than with say, 70....

But yes, the 400 lets you do stuff like that...

Fair enough, as long as them tyres are warm, lol...

I've been down the road a few times, I exercise a bit of caution nowadays...

On the track that's a different story...

General chat is for everyone, and even if its in the ...forum?

A central motard forum under Competition Riding Hopefully the others will add their views too...

That was all a dig back at Quasi... And I was quoting the SM, not the SMC...

I liked some aspects of it, mainly the power.
review...

You're a legend!
But anyway, thanks for your input Gav. Much appreciated.

I couldn't find much info on the SMC. The KTM.au site only has the SM.
...
One things for sure, it looks loads better....

Full power out...

hit the "multi" button to the right of the "quote" to quote many things at once. when you've got all you want, hit a quote or reply button to create the post and all teh quotes will be there in order of your selection;)

People. It would seem obvious to me that we really do finally need a motard section!!!

This is because I feel the need to once again tell everyone how fast I once was racing lightly modified dirt bikes well before it was trendy!

Because I'm my biggest fan. I've got pictures to prove it. Do it.

Pete :-)

For all you F3 anti motard brigade...that pic was taken in '91'. No foot out then...none required. I've pics from as early as '87'...still no foot out!

For the motard guys and girls out there...if you want to be able to race the road racers, keep your feet on the pegs and go round the corners as fast as you can. I bet you it's STILL the fastest way.

Pete

But does it look as cool?
Thats the clincher:bleh:

Take the pic of Reuben Xaus waving at the camera while chucking the Duke motard on its ear- he'd be last out of the corner, but hip deep in fans and gorgeous womenfolk!!

Therein lies the rub with the road guys... He'd have punted them off line or destroyed their lines...

The thing is Paul...from my experience (yeah I've said this 100 times already), too many wannabe motard racers are so hung up on getting sideways and stylie, that they're forgetting to go fast!

I've seen so many posts here from people that think a typical motard bike has better acceleration off the corners than they do...but that's bollicks. An SV 650 or similar has much better drive than a 450 dirt bike.

So you've got to try and exploit your bikes strong points. For me...racing a dirt bike for years meant that I'd do a live or die braking move...try to maintain as much corner speed as poss and sweep through the corner to minimize the road bikes advantage of acceleration!

Yeah cool, count me in, i like the strength of the dogrooter team, maybe we should just have a drz motard section! Now, who's got a DRZ dirt bike carb they wanna sell me! Mine don't do wheelies like the mud spitting ones do

Ya doing something wrong then.

Mine comes up effortlessly in first and second...

Yip, all those add up to quite a bit of extra power but, from my understanding, more instant response...

Once I've paid mine off, I'll see about go-faster bits...
