I reckon that could be cleaned up - screw a spark plug in, hold the plug body in the chuck of a lathe and smooth it off. Don't take off too much and it shouldn't drop the compression. Or you could also take a corresponding amount off the sealing face and get the compression back.

Well, you couldn't make it a whole lot worse.

assuming it doesnt come in contact with a good piston in normal stroke, is there any reason why you need to do anything with it other than stick it back together?

sharp points will (might) glow red hot under normal running and cause detonation.

OH thats fucken helpful!! Jeeeeppers:mad:

Na mate seen them worse than that! You can get that machined you just need to make sure the squish is set correctly and the bowl size is the same so the compression is same.
Do you want me to email one of my good Karting mates and see if he will machine it for you. No guarantee's he's pretty busy and it will mean sending it to Wellington.

Well why the hell didn't you say what you meant instead of the Krapman comments your always spouting!
You do have a reputation around KB to uphold I suppose???

Tell you what why don't you "fuck off" back to the rest of KB till you actually have an MX bike, as there's been nothing constructive in your contributions to this thread so far! That's for sure!!!

BTW: the offer still stands Tommorth!!

Seen worse. Much worse. Question is how much meat do you have before you hit the water jacket?

You can get it machined to take out all the damage (as someone said). Only problem is that it may leave the metal too thin so that it breaks through to the water passage.

Or you can just use sandpaper, file and Dremel to clean it up, remove high bits, smooth over low bits.

It's a two smoker, so the head doesn't do much , just needs to be strong enough and smoothish. And have a sane amount of squish.

Good points Xion but my mate would make those decisions for him as std pratice as part of the job.

If you don't want to go down that road tommorth you can do what Xion suggests.

$40ish doesn't seem like much money to spend to gain the peace of mind that the head won't cause a problem down the line. But I guess it all adds up to become expensive with all the parts needed.

Why not have a go cleaning it up, re-evauate and post up more pics.

Do the KTM's have different sized base gaskets to adjust the cmpression? Maybe you could use the thinnest gasket to gain any lost compression by the work to clean the head???? Anyone know more on this???

Reckless
3rd September 2008, 22:19
Changing the base gasket height will alter the port timing as well and therefore engine characteristics. Eg by lifting and/or lowering the barrell your not just changing the compression pressure your changing when the piston passes the ports and therefore when they open and close and thats a whole different ball of wax!

Lets back the bus up a bit.

You waded in getting all pissy over a completely innocuous comment made by me simply because you're a avid member of the I Hate Katman Club.

If you don't like getting it, don't throw it around.

And your little recruitment campaign is truly fucking pathetic.

Firstly I wasn't any member of any hate Krapman club (till now). Secondly telling someone "he couldn't have made it any worse" on a bike he's just spent a lot of money buying, riden for 2 hours and its totally lunched itself "top and bottom end" was bloody Crappy.
Then when I simply commented that it "wasn't fucken helpful" you get all personal by telling me to "get my head out of my arse". Even then in response I didn't attack you personally and just told you to "Fuck off" back to the rest of KB if you didn't have anything constructive to input. Then you red rep me and tell me "to go fuck myself".
Which the wife walks in and see's and wonders why I'm hangin out in the place with guys like that. Now she thinks all KBer's are a bunch of wankers and I can't have my user CP up on my other monitor incase one of my kids comes in and spot it as well.

So I suppose your proud of yourself now! Made your pitiful day has it! You are a hypocrite mate! Maybe you should conduct yourself socially the way your always preaching to others on how they should ride.
And with reference to calling "one comment" a campaign against you! Get a life mate! Your not that important! If people feel like supporting a guy who has been generally helpful, given lots of technical and safety advice and organised all the "Dirt Division T Shirts" by red rep-ping you they should feel free to do so. Maybe they could help me by green rep-ping me (which we do very little of in the Off road forum) so your disgusting comment goes further down the list and gets hidden from view.

So don't tell me to back up my fucken bus! I can give it and take it with the best of them mate! We'll let the others be the judge! This has waisted enough of my time!

You reap what you sow!

Now maybe we should get back to helping Tommorth as Krapman has turned this thread into a sham!!

/edit: Just read your last post... take your pills loser... 'You couldn't make it any worse' perfectly describes the situation. Well, unless it flies outta the lathe and cracks in half on the bosses Merc :o

Back On Topic.........My head in my cr125 was not that flash either and all i did was "sand" the high spots down and banged her back in and have had ZERO problems so far........I think if the piston wont hit or a bit wont fal off and your not overly anal you should be ok and as far as any performance drop goes well if you can feel it you need to start finding sponsers etc and start riding pro :niceone::niceone:

Side note why the heck are non-offroaders even bothering to post rubbish in here i sure as hell dont even look at the on-road forums let alone post maybe i should hehehehe

im confused about that one too; im not sure what it is exactly that draws them in here with their bullshit, and im still waiting for the day when someone from the on road side of things comes into the offroad area and says something productive.

maybe a look at the video in the following link could help

....

I don't stay in 'my own area'...rather I read threads with titles that seem interesting. I thought this one was about taxidermy. I can't add anything to the helpful suggestions on repair of the OP's slightly battered head, but I can suggest that if it is repairable, then the smoother the job is, the less a drop in performance. Can the dents be filled? And then the whole thing get gently ground back to smooth, maybe with a dremel.

i would be carefull of the bit stuck in the head vibration over time and heat may dislodge it and trash the bore again. As for the cases should be able to clean them up ok as the surfaces are not as important apart form where bearing sit and any other smooth polished surface.
Happy to have a look at them if you want can bring them in to my workshop in newmarket after work one night (or during the day boss can stop when he likes) if you want. Im normally here till 6:30ish in fact im still here now.
