So now we've got a motard forum.

One thing I'm curious about is - what motard do you ride? I'm sure there's going to be a lot of DRZ400sm's, but there's bound to be a lot of different kinds out there.

Myself, I ride a 2006 Husky 610sm. Loving it so far - although the gearing might need a bit of attention and I'd like to get a bit more out of the top end.

Huzzah for the motard forum. Great work to see, despite what the whinging naysayers will have us believe, that a motivated individual put up a thread, asked nicely, and lo and behold the Mental One has made it so :D:D:D:D:2thumbsup:

Edit- Damn, now I'm number two :second:to post in it and will always have to put up with Mikkel doing the Austin Powers impression and demanding to know "who does number 2 work for"!!!!

I suppose I can claim my reason for being here is that I ride a DR350 engined bike, so I'm sortof(not really) a motard guy

Woohoo....

Go to work and return to find this.

AWESOME....

Thanks to Spank and M.T. and everyone else who supprted the request.

Judging by the amount of post in here already, there was a fair amount of motard related stuff, so I'm sure the section will be used...

Now, I've got a 06 DRZ400SM. Bought it second hand, has over 24000k's on it... Seems to go well enough....

Haven't really done any mods to it, bar putting glue in the throttle twist grip, to simulate a quick turn throttle. Works a treat....

Anyhow... I'm off to check out a few threads...

Thanks again guys....

The WR was rego'd and the 525 will be as soon as I can sort a speedo out

Sweet... How do the service intervals compare between them?

Would a Veypour work? Not sure how they get speed pickup but they are adjustable, so doesn't matter what whees you run...

The KTM is a little more service hungry but well worth it. Having a 6th gear makes a HUGE difference and that extra bit of ooph is great too!

As far as motard use goes the KTM is the clear winner in my mind:)

I'm going to get a Vapor for it, just haven't found any for sale at a decent price yet.:sunny:

Reg is on hold and I've got the DR to run around on.
It needs a new cambelt and steering bearings and it'd be back on the road.

I use a TrailTech Panoram on the Nordie - predecessor to the Vaypor but has no temp/rev/permanent backlight. Pickup same as pushie speedos.

I run a CatEye Mity on the XR.

How many fingers do you use for the brake? Two? Three?

I find I have better feel and control with three on the DRZ... Still a newb with them though and quite inconsistent...

Ive always used 2 fingers exept on my CRF50, but thats cause it had drum brakes you HAD to use 4 fingers and a big bounce to get that thing to stoppie at 50kph hahaha

mag wheels supplyed by motoworks on mates 04, it has better felling in the tyres being tubeless, compared to the wires my 05. mine has better brakes/suspenion (with race tech springs) and goes a little better for some reasion :bash:, great fun over the gibbies pass together, thery are all over each other. :wari:

What to buy next - that's obvious - a decent muffler instead of the rough gutted out standard.

no way.

no point, this can is light, sounds great, and doesnt restrict the HP in any way.

and its not too noisy.

DRZ's with aftermarket pipes are too loud

Another point to condser...

With DRZ400's, the SM has a 38mm header... The enduro model has a 41mm header. The SM suffers from restricted flow right from the start... Smaller carb, different cams and choked pipe, it all adds up.

So the SM should have good torque but less top end.

I've had many a drag race between my KLX400R and the supposedly lesser DRZ's. With identical gearing there's bugger all in it, if anything the KLX was a touch more savage through say 3-4000, and there's plenty of occasions where that's less than ideal.

Used to ride with a friend and his slightly less powerful, porkier DRZS. The only places I had a clear advantage was in the very tight stuff with reasonable traction, and on the gravel.

So yeah, where it mattered.

I Motard a DR650. Raced it for about a year and a half now. Yes its the lowest maintainace bike on the track but not the slowest despite its weight. 15,000k and 25 speed events so far and all its had is a spark plug and an oil change, brake pads and a few sets of tyres.
I usually run between the 400's and the bigger bikes.
I also ride it to work every day.

ok in theory but not in practice the sm has less torque and heaps less top end revability

Yeah it adds up big time, different compression ratio too. i dunno if you guys have ever ridden a 400E but they are a great bike, heaps of useable, torquey power. Don't get me wrong, i love my SM and you can have heaps of fun with it but as standard they've chocked it up big time, which is good in a way because it means there's plenty more unlockable power in there, you just gotta spend a bit to unlock it. I reserved mine before it arrived cos i didn't wanna miss out and i knew it was a good steed (from owning an E) but was a bit miffed when i tried to make the cunt stand up for the first time!

Yup, same production line. But the KLX is the same spec' as the DRZ400E, except for the instruments and light, it's road legal out of the box.

That's why I bought it, I'd ridden both the S and the E and the KLX was basically the best of both worlds. Fookin' chewed through the rear S12s though...
