I have one. I've put on 25,000km in 13 months. Once I fitted a Power Commander to sort out the fuelling from 3000 - 4000 rpm its just about the perfect bike for my needs. Wonderful motor with lots of grunt, yet very smooth. Comfortable enough to ride Wellington to Auckland and okay in gravel. But it is heavy (beween an XT660 and F650), so it's not a trail bike. Brilliant headlights. Good screen. 45mm Marzochi forks (non-adjustable), Sachs rear shock (preload is a bitch to change, rebounding damping is adjustable).

My previous bike was a Funduro and I chose the Pegaso over the F650GS and XT660R. I'm very happy.

Note that the latest models have a lambda probe (measures oxygen in the exhaust gases). I understand that they are a bit smoother, but Dynojet has not yet developed a PowerCommander fuel map for them.

Cheers

That looks very ssssexy - kind of like the new Tenere in an angular way. Whats the scoop with them. Can you buy in NZ from a dealer, parts etc. Yamaha engine? More BM than KTM?
Frodo you coming to the DB so I can have a ride?

Thanks Frodo, what sort of mileage do you get?
How many liters/how many kms out of a tank..?
You compare it with your Funduro, which is basicly my older Pegaso....
What differences/improvements stand out noticably?

Mileage: pretty consistent 21 km/l on my standard 40km commute into town. Mix of open road, twisties and gravel last weekend gave me 20km/l. At first I thought this was less than the Funduro, but the odometer is 100% accurate, so my gas mileage is accurate, while the Funduro wasn't. I think it is about the same, but the Peg motor encourages more aggresive riding. However, the Funduro tank holds an extra litre or so.

Big differences: on-road handling is vastly superior. I know that the Funduro was older (and so more worn), but the Peg's suspension front and rear (described in the earlier post) is much better. The Funduro would get unruly in Wellington cross-winds, whereas the Peg is solid - perhaps the frame is stiffer.

Motor is much better especially up to 5000rpm, but only after fitting the PowerCommander. The bottom end grunt is magic, yet the motor loves to rev (although there is no reward going beyond 6000rpm).

Easier to adjust valves (SOHC with lock-nuts, compared to DOHC with shims), but taking the tank off is a mission.

Overall the Peg is better in almost all respects (except range). Should add the changing the rear preload is a bitch.

Two downsides:

- I found www.f650.com to be a hugely valuable resource when fixing the Funduro - nothing equivalent exists for the Peg. The Pegaso forum is dominated by Poms who buy a bike, spend a third as much again on pipes and other accessories, then complain how much they lose when selling it after six months. www.XT660.com is better for advice on the motor.

- The Peg is rare in NZ. I have yet to see another Trail and I rode around the North Island during summer. The dealer and importers have been good (e.g. replacing taillight and throttle position sensor), but there isn't the depth that BMW provides.

One unknown: how long will the motor last? Doesn't have any obvious glitches (like the Funduro and F650 waterpump problem), but otherwise the Rotax motors last forever. The Yam motor should be good. Doesn't burn any oil, but then again it shouldn't.

The PowerCommander allows you to adjust the fuelling on a laptop. But carbs can be stripped on the side of the road (I know, I had to!).

Cheers

FWIW Mac from Maidstone Yamaha said the new Tenere is *supposed* to be available in NZ in 6 months or so.

Here's a picture of my bike taken last weekend in the Wairarapa. It has the low front guard from a 2004 Pegaso, Givi bars for an XT660, hand guards from an F650 and Givi panniers and topbox.

Haven't made plans yet, but if you're up this way, send me a PM.

Hopefully the new super ten will be public knowledge by then as well. Rumors of a 1200 parallel twin but seems likely that will be more v strom than the new XT660Z - alloy wheels and all damn it!!!!

Here's a picture (probably "an artist's impression").

And here is the other two "pictures". This first is supposedly a photo shop by MCN who I get the impression are famous for creating crap picutres to sell mags

<a href="http://shutter10.pictures.aol.com/data/pictures/21/008/7F/CF/9E/11/GfVk2byiMy3hg3a0VnpO9+t9y1dqkO0l0300.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://shutter10.pictures.aol.com/data/pictures/21/008/7F/CF/9E/11/GfVk2byiMy3hg3a0VnpO9+t9y1dqkO0l0300.jpg" border="0"></a>

The second is from Jenna who from reading the XTZ750 forum seems to be into Super tens in a big way and have some sort of association with Yammy UK.

<a href="http://www.1000ps.net/images/f_G926458.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.1000ps.net/images/f_G926458.jpg" border="0"></a>

From everthing I've read and seen it seems like Frodo's pic is the most likely look of the new bike - hence the alloy wheels etc etc. I think the MNZ photochop (yellow bike above) would be a reasonable compromise (put better sus on it though please Yamaha) and I get the impression that the blue bike is a pipe dream.

Sorry for the off topic. As you were.

Cheers R

I wouldn't mind going to a twin for the passengerability and get a smaller bike 350-400cc for more adventurous stuff.

But to start with I'm looking at ways of achieving this with the DR and on the cheap.

certainly a bit more fun factor on the DR350-400,
maybe the KTM adventura for the 2 up trips

AFAIK the XTZ660 engine is pretty damn good. Wasn't it the shizz in supermono racing a few years ago? 90% of the field ran an XTZ660 engine in a 250-2T chassis.

Supermotard sure killed off that class.
