Just working on a bunch of NZ images at the mo for some posters and came across this gem.
It looks to me to be a stretch of road I've ridden many times down South, But I could be wrong. I'm picking it for north of Makarora, south of Haast Pass... fairly sure there is a lovely bit of road like that cos I remember riding it and thinking how pretty it was...

So? any thoughts?

The glade just north of Rotorua?
Looks similar but of course it's rather short stretch that is like this...
Fitzgerald Glade

hmmm... think I know where you mean ...

The road surface looks like the gritty South island stuff tho...

I honestly have know idea where it is. I'm just guessing. :)

It could be in the Rotomas between Rotorua and Kawerau.

I thought the same, are there beech trees on that run?

Looks a bit like it but i think that stretch is a bit more open at the top of the trees, so you see the disappearing mountain. Or it was last time I rode it a couple of years ago

Fitzgerald Glade was my first guesse too but road makings look too new plus the trees a little scrawny

Murray

Pretty sure its the Glade as they put the yellow lines in as there is a cafe hidden to the right up ahead and traffic pulled out from there straight into overtaking traffic

I was also going to say "road to Turoa"...

Ohakune Mountain Road is my guess but it has been a while since i was up there.

I'd say Milford Road near the 45th parallel North of Te Anau. Makarora to Haast doesn't have such closed in glades like that from what I remember.

Hitcher

The trees in the photo are South Island Beech. The road is the Milford Road between Te Anau and Milford Sound.

Looks like most of us are saying Milford. Now I'm home from work here's the only pic I could find, its a scan of a photo when we went in there in the car 10 years ago - haven't been back since nor on the bike. Obviously at a slightly different spot than the first photo with a kink in the road.

Crikey look at my little angel there in her sunnies - she's 22 now and about to get married in Zurich in January.

Hitcher you probably have ridden the bike in there - any pics?

I've ridden through there twice in the past four years but have no photos that demonstrate a road lined with South Island Beech.

It can only be the Milford Road, as apart from Peel Forest, there is no Beech on any part of the South Island other than the West Coast, and on the Buller Gorge Road all of the trees are cut further back from the road edge (where there aren't any cliffs or bluffs).

That's the nice thing about the South Island... there's so many nice deserted biker roads that it could be damn near anywhere :D

There are many species of Beech. Those pictured (are RED Beech) , found to the north of Makarora but before Haast Pass.(near the Blue Pools.) The Milford road has SILVER beech.

Certainly not Fitzgerald Glade it has proper trees in it. Down south as the picture shows all they have are Beech trees.:argue:

You can't ride a bike to Milford Sound without vehicle support any more - they took the fuel away. It's a 400km round trip Te Anau to Milford...your bike's range is about 300......

Here's my pic of the milford

Hitcher
5th September 2008, 21:46
It's a 240km round trip from Te Anau to Milford. 100km to the tunnel and 20 down to where the gas used to be.

Ok whatever....... I made it there and back on a tank. Vehicle support  If you needed to do 400kms and your bike doesn't have the range strap on a gas can :bleh:

I rode several times from TeAnau to Milford and back on one tank of Gass on the xsessive, can be done without hitting reserve. 27 liter long range tank gives it a 430k range on a full tank
Didnt bother to refill at Milford due to the fuel being so exspensive, bad enough tanking up at TeAnau.

McJim
5th September 2008, 22:02
If you can make it from Te Anau to Milford and back on one tank then you're just not giving it enough throttle :Pokey:

Ditto, my first picks too but it could be almost anywhere in NZ. John.

There is a bit of a glade on the Rahu Saddle between Springs and Reefton that looks somewhat like that (the lewis is more open). There is also a section down near Franz/Fox somewhere where the trees are tight against the road. Somewhere on the SI west coast :2thumbsup

First attempt at adding to a "thread"! I would say it is either the road from Makaroa to Gates of Haast near the blue pools rest area or as suggested small stretch of road just out of the Franz Joes township.( or was it Fox? )

YUP!!!! You know the exact stretch of road I am referring to don't ya????

Most of the road between Makarora and the Pass is open but there IS a closed in glade... and I reckon thats it (BTW I may be currently residing in Auckland but I have ridden the South island many many times...).

I didn't recognise the tree species, I just thought the road looked familiar and I was curious ... what a beautiful country we live in

That is my a once a month sunday ride to Pleasant Flat picnic area (about 5 km's north of the Gates of The Haast).I need to refuel at Makarora on the way back though. I go all the way to Haast itself, if time allows.

Tons of places like that down here - Makarora, Milford road, Springs Junction/Maruia Springs area etc etc...even the Beaumont-Clydevale road past the Blueys down nearer to Chez Scumdog...

Dead boring it is.

It's Milford.

Can't be. Take a look at the size / diameter of the tree trunks, and tree spacings. buellbabe's photo was taken about a year ago... did they shrink / disappear ???. The marker posts on the Makarora road are few and far between... Still are. Milford road is new seal...Makarora road... still got the moss growing on the road.
Both pictures together...see for yourself...
Download both photo's and flick between the two.

Yeah - but - Mine was taken 8 years ago. The speed blur hides the moss on the road and the colour of the seal is just a trick of the white balance and the scan of the (film) exposure. I've got much thinner trees two exposures prior too.
