I popped this on my blog (link in sig), and thought I'd post it here as well because at least people read KB.
Bike Depreciation:
When looking for a bike someone told me – remember to look at the total cost of the bike.
Buying it is the cheap bit – depreciation is the killer. Using this logic – he told me to buy a ‘premium’ brand like BMW or Harley Davidson.
Given the restrictions I had on me (licence exemptions) – And being new to biking I decided to go the ‘cheap’ bike route assuming (as it turns out incorrectly) that I was going to drop it.
So – I ended up with the Suzuki Boulevard M50. I purchased it as part of Suzuki Fiest and got it for $10,500 Including on-roads.
When I came to trade this in 8000km and 7 months later – I was surprised the differing values people would trade it for.
The bike was stock with the exception of the sissybar and luggage rack – also the rego had run out 2 months prior (oops).
I was looking for a DL1000 or DL650 V-Strom. The worst price - $8000 – or $0.31 per km (ignoring the accessories) – Best price $10,000 (yes just $500 less than what I paid for it) - $0.06 per km. Now I know you are thinking – I was probably ripped off on the new bike – not so.
I had done my research on the V-Strom, any problems and gotcha's. I ended up with a K6 (2006) Model with 14000km on the clock, custom seat ($600), Givi Screen ($350), Ventura rack and luggage ($400?) – 1 owner and had never been dropped – absolutely perfect condition.
Cost to move bikes - $1200. Result! Now Im a ADV rider (well - Im working on it). EDIT - Was going to be cheaper - but they spotted the out of date REGO.
The moral of the post – remember to shop around when trading and buying – it can save you $$$$.
