Always wanted to do this so I'd like to organise a group to do this ride probably in about 12 months time.
I think ideally about 12 riders with an intermediate to advanced skill set.
From looking on the web the prices are generally about $4,500 to $5,000 AUD and then there are airfares to Aussie (and back if uncle Helen is not around)and spending money.
My questions are.
- What companies are best for our requirements(genuine off road).
- What time of year is the best time to go.
- What group size is best
- Is there lots of road riding (does everyone need to have a motorbike license)
And general feed back. If you would be keen to do this then make it known and I'll put something together.
Cave Weta, have you got any contacts over there with good pricing?
There is also Black Duck Valley motorbike park in Brisbane that I want to check out. Has a bit of a rep as they have had 3 deaths and 285 ambulances called out in 3 yrs!!! Fark!

There are a few operations offering off road tours to the tip of Cape York but from what i've heard Cape York Motorcycle Adventures are at the top of the list.

I'd love to do this ride but F it's expensive. Five grand is a sht load of money for 8 days. Granted it would be an experience I wouldn't forget but there must be cheaper ways to do it.
I guess I could buy a bike off ebay & sell it again after? Any other ideas or experiences?

Yes it is expensive. It includes:
Bike Hire
Food
Support Vehicle
etc.
I suspect that they have to pay land owners a fee for every bike etc etc.
I don't know if I'd like to do it "Bareback"(for want of a better word).

They bought bikes in Sydney and sold them 6 ? weeks later to the same place.
He lives in Pirongia so you could likely come and talk to someone with recent experience. If you want to get in touch send me a PM

My grandfather did a ride along these lines a good decade ago. He enjoyed it but found the terrain wasn't really tough enough. I'd say there are loads of different treks you could do though.

Well its been a whole year of talking the talk. Now its time to put a plan together. I'm waiting for details (trying to swing a deal) to come back from Cape Yorke tours.
www.capeyorkmotorcycles.com.au
Please pm me if you are interested in going mid next year, probably August.
there are two tours a 5 day and an 8 day so please state your preference.
I'll then come back with a breakdown on pricing.

I did this ride a few years ago with Cape York tours-we did the full Monty up to CY and back. I would highly recommend it. The riding is not all that hard but they will tailor the ride to the group.....I'll post some photos somewhere for people to have a look......alas I didn't have a very good camera in those days....

i looked at doing a ride with Cape York Motorcycles this year - (thanks to getting made redundant it got put on hold!) But looking round they seem to be the best and cheapest. If you need numbers let me know as a couple of us would be keen around aug-oct next year.. either that or the goldfield ride.

cape york motorcycles seem to be the best organised, with good modern bikes. between march and november would be the best time, (likely only time) because of flooding on the cape during the wet season, and you need your license

if you're expecting hard out bush bashing, you will be disapointed. mostly its gravel/dirt roads and a few 4x4 tracks, river crossings are prob the most challenging, and dont worry, they teach you how to escape from a crocs jaws before you leave;)
