Well I went on a trail ride in the Marlborough Sounds (Queen Charlotte Sounds)
Started off from Whatamango Bay Past Picton and Waikawa
It was really foggy and quite cold, geared up an warmed bikes up.
Started on our ride on forestry roads winding up and down hills along the Tory channel.
Stopped 4 morning tea at a power pilon thingy, (see first pic of the Ferry coming Through Tory Channel on its way to Picton)
second pic is of my klx and the beautiful view
3rd pic is some of the riders an bikes
and more beautiful views over Tory Channel
We rode on Towards the end of the Tory channel to the start of Cook Strait, some preemo riding, a gnarly down hill shingle firebreak with a huge ditch at the end made for some interesting riding Considering i stalled going down...(wtf) and couldn't bump start it an ended up skidding all over the place on the way down.:(
hit a big slip across the track and had 2 find a different way around.
Found a cool up hill fire break an managed to get up before some other riders so I could get some pics.
Stopped and had lunch at the Tory Channel head.
You could see the North Island really clear.
After lunch went up a really slippery track, a few offs including me, i got cross rutted and ended up close and personal with a gorse bush.... YYOOOWWIIEEE still picking the prickles out of my skin, must of looked bloody funny for the other guys behind me!! LOL
turned round an headed over Port underwood side of the sounds, some of the guys had a go at a big long steep firebreak (see pic with red line) One guy managed to get up there...lots of carnage for the rest.
It was getting later in the day so headed back to the start site.
Preemo day all up!! can't be happier getting out on the bike!:2thumbsup

great pics chick.

Who organised this ride ? Just a few mates or club?

I take it this is the forestry ridge line between Port Underwood & Tory channel? If so is it easy to get in ie are there gates? I thought it was locked from the bottom of Hakana bay? Can you get in from the top Picton end of the tongue?

Sorry for all the questions it's just we have a bach in Trevalli Bay Port underwood & I've been meaning to take Gonzo (my KLR650) along there. I have ridden down that firebreak on my mountain bike (if we are talking about the same repeater station)- fark it was insane

We may have to have a nelson rideout to catch up with the Marlboroughites

Wicked pics!
I've been meaning to get a camera for taking pics during trails etc. After one that I wouldn't mind destroying incase it cushioned my fall so to speak.

These pics have inspired me to get one sooner rather than later :)

What camera did you take these with? How many Mega Pixel's etc?

nice down that way.......
I spent the day riding from cold kiwi to paparoa, was great, dry roads just about all the way and found myself getting back in the zone after a winter of very little riding, feel back in love with my bike.

This ride was organised through the Marlborough Boys college motor bike club.
They seem to be able to get permission to alot of the places that ya normally never would. it only costs $10 per rider to tag along and ya get the best riding places (although ya have to wait for the less experienced riders every half hour so they catch up)
I'm not sure how you go about getting permission, and its not like they don't patrol it either, we ran in to the forestry manager up there he was checking we weren't riding where we shouldn't
but there was no locked gate on the Tory channel side where we went in, but there was a locked gate on the Port Underwood side.
Will look in to this a bit more for ya tho, Deanohit might have more info about this???

I used an old Sony Cyber-Shot 5Mega Pixel in a hardshell case as didn't want to take my good camera for that very reason (knew i would break it)
It does the trick, but I would recommend a Canon or Lumix Brand of camera as these are the best. :msn-wink:

Yea, we used to have a key from the Port Underwood side, and that was the only one I remember, we would camp down in Oyster Bay in Tory Channel at a mates place.
We managed to get a hold of that because we were culling the pigs, at the time there was TB in the area.
His Yammie Grizzly quad was an awesome machine for those fire trails. :2thumbsup

Fantastic photos and report! :D I can’t wait until I get myself a bike so I can join the boys in my family for a trail ride. You’ve just demonstrated to me the stunning sights that I am yet to see on my travels. (< nearest smiley I could find for rubbing hands together!)

Sunday I spent running our club’s mini motocross racing with my husband. Whilst cheering on our two sons in their racing. We managed to fit in 6 rounds in total and was delighted with a mixture of 1st’s and 2nd’s for my eldest and 3rd’s and 4th’s for my youngest. :D

R6chick = yeah, let us know when the club organises another ride. Do they have a calendar, or is it just whenever? Would be keen to get across for a day.

if we'd been using our superman vision we could have been keeping an eye on you all from 'up norf'. You should be somewhere just to the right of the pine trees...

Hopefully you didn't fill your helmet with water (with your head still in it) and need to go to the physio on Monday like I did :)

Went to Ardmore for the Wildman MX... Had my first MX race since 1992...

Remember that pathetically slow guy at the back of the field, you know the one, you watch him tootle round and think to your self "if I ever get that slow, just shoot me" well I've become that guy......:oi-grr:

It was bloody fun though..... :woohoo:

Only took a few pix. The vets race being before your race, I was still a sweaty, heaving mass of decaying old MX'er and unable to focus my eyes, let alone the camera...... Got some of the Jr races and the Wildmen at the end..... Don't often see someone with a big "L" on their bike easily winning the feature. Methinks it didn't mean "Last" or "Learner" That was the best track I've had the pleasure to ride on at Ardmore, I loved the new drop off and all the tight esses...Cool.....:2thumbsup:2thumbsup

My husband doesn’t even get time to be that pathetically slow guy at the back of the field at the moment what with organising the mini’s.

Well done in racing again! Glad you enjoyed yourself! Good photos! :D

Thanks Nicola, it was heaps of fun and while I was at the back, it seemed fast to me. Never occurred to me when I was younger that one day I'd be at a race meet riding with my daughter.. It's just too cool..... Hope we can all go for a trail ride one day, maybe a KB get together at a Mr Motorcycles ride, ride as a group and help the littlies (and newbies) round the loop.....
