Your correct in that, the poor guy. Its such a waste of a young life. What were they thinking when they done that? I mean, who rides with no lights on, on a moonless night?

I mean, who rides with no lights on, on a moonless night?
Trail bike riders in Alexandra do apparently.
It was also trendy for Harley riders not long ago in NZ.

Back in the day it was pretty much standard practice . You can see further at night, once your eyes adapt, without headlights.
Major downer is if you encounter someone with lights you lose your night vision for half an hour. But back then the back roads were pretty much deserted at night.

Years ago was riding the Port Hills road above Christchurch one dark night...half way round a long tight corner with a vertical face on the right and a ten million foot sheer drop on the left and the friggin headlight went out......bulb blown......now THAT was scary for a second or two.....but did manage to stop safely...obviously, or I wouldn't be talkin' about it....

BusaJim and I discovered that his headlight bulb had blown when we reached the Homer tunnel, going to Milford.
That is a very dark place..downhill and rough.

stupid.....only people who are hurt are the family and unfortunately for them, it will haunt them for the rest of their lives.....gives young people and bikers a bad name

He paid the ultimate price for what we can all sit here and say is poor judgement. but who can honestly sit here, put your hand on your heart and say you havn't done somthing stupid and got away with it? I cant! just means we got away with it......that time at least.
Dont be too critical, next time you do somthing stupid it could be you were all talking about!
RIP rider, thoughts to families.

Have light should use. No light no see, no see.........crash for sure.
Theres a similar case within the surfing fraternity. Surfing by moonlight..... sounds great but in reality a different kettle of fish. I have done this twice in my 25 years of surfing and each time (although we had fun) some one got toasted. The second time in Indonesia we had the local cop row out to the reef in a dugout to stop us, saying...."Big shark like din-dins at nitetime", and "very bad if something happen" "you come in now". We all had tasted the coral by this time and cag'd a ride back to the beach with him.
Funny at the time.
But F__k that riding with no lights!

My partners family own a large farm and quite often at night if you have something to do that involves a bit of travel the farmbikes were used without headlights as you can see quite a way ahead of you once your eyes adjusted. I would assert that its reasonably common in rural areas. However, it only takes a decent street light to rob you of it.
Thing is... stupid or not, we have all done things that could have killed us - why arent we being dissed or commented on? Because we got away with it, nothing happened, no news to tell... and it becomes an anecdote, a story we tell at parties and social functions to impress others.
Funny that, if it ends your life or someone elses, causes serious injury or harm - everyone has an opinion on it and it was bad or stupid. But if it doesnt, it becomes a fable, an adventure and is regarded as an event to be loooked upon with merit.
Us humans are a funny breed.

Yep,done plenty of night time riding without lights, some at good speeds on the open road.Riding down from the Bay of Islands one evening one of the bikes lost it's headlight....we put him between 2 bikes and carried on,cops didn't even bother.
Like everything else that gets the Safety Nazi's here all riled up....like no helmets or protective gear - it's only a problem if something goes wrong. They are all happy to speed - coz speed doesn't kill eh? It's all perfectly safe so long as something doesn't go wrong....duh.
I would hazard a guess that these young lads weren't trying carefully to get from A to B with the knowledge they had no lights and so taking due care....they might have been hooning around on the road at night racing each other....just a guess you understand....

This is actually alot more common than people think. A mate used to show up to parties in the dark often on a CR125, and to stop his eyes from watering the crazy SOB would be wearing sunglasses. (steady, you know who your are)
We would often get caught out on rides and return in the dark, or pop around to mates place. A couple times I ran my RG250 and RGV250 race bike on state highway 1 to test it before race day in the dark as there was no way to trying it out on the farm effectively. Incredibly stupid.

Stupid is as stupid does.
Sums it up pretty well IMHO... worst part about this, apart from the senseless waste of life is that it becomes just another 'dangerous motorcycles' statistic which will bite us all in the arse eventually :(

Multiply all available light by up 50.000x......imagine aiming at a car/bike headlight with that......

Bleh that only happens in movies, I'm sure night vision devices have protection against bright light exposure
