What sad fucks we are in this pussy day & age where we have to get 2 stroke kicks on Youtube.

My mate is building one (for the last 10 years) with the braced frame modern front & rear end & wheels, Nikons & a million kilos lost (pretty easy, everything on them was made heavy to calm the bike down. I'm just waiting till he is almost finished & then needs some money.

Sure, the RG on the whole was a better bike but for looks and sound, IMO the RZ has it.

Erm, my RG500 had a real clatter to the sound (similar to the racebikes) caused mainly by the disc valves, which gave me the horn back in the '80's . As for looks the RG with its seat cowling was simply gorgeous. Still, I'd have loved an RZ500 sitting next to it though!

I agree with you Dave but the real sad thing will be the day 2 strokes are gone from GP's,when they go the two stroke will be dead.Yamaha and Suzuki were built on two strokes and now they seem hell bent on turning there backs on there own tradition and history. They would rather sell overweight and overtechnologolised 4 strokes to a gullible public that have never experienced a true power band. The real sad fucks are the ones who will never get to ride them.In this day and age of engine management systems & fuel and oil injection technology they could make two strokes as clean burning as diesels...if they wanted to.I grew up on a diet of RD's & RG's and now totally miss watching true close racing as witnessed in 250 proddies in the 80/90,s.Pity the poor saps who are shelling out obsene amounts of money to be competitive in todays so called racing classes. There, rant over.Im going out to the garage to work on my 350 LC,I need something to calm me down.

Not for me it wasn't. My RZ had been worked over quite heavily and was around 50% up over standard hp. Good old Robert Taylor, technical manager of Yamaha NZ at the time had supplied my mechanic factory plans for doubling their hp. Had the porting and headwork done, just hadn't got as far as fitting TZ carbs and making the expansion chambers.

Only problem with the RZ500 was the RG500The only people I know that had both, and rode them together regularly, reckoned they were both as fun as each other.

Did the cranks stand up to that much more hp?
And how would you have got on with the carbs as they would not have been easy to fit?

I had chambers on mine at one stage, gave it a bit more power but made it rev higher (ie 11500rpm).
But the main thing was IT SOUNDED BLOODY FANTASTIC !!!

It was all detailed in the plans how to do it.

Funny you should mention that Dave....they ran out of gas on the warm down lap, the race also started slightly late but due to TV committments finished on the hour. The 2nd place Honda crew appeared on the rostrum with a fairly full jug of gas that they'd drained from there tank at the finish, something about being sore losers apparently. Really though it was Wayne Gardener's radical tactic of hitting the kill switch just as he passed Richard Scott to take the lead with a couple of mins to go that probably backfired on them. Fair to say that this hasn't been a race strategy commonly embraced since Honda Aus pioneered it :nono:.

F5 Dave
22nd September 2008, 12:33
Ahh that's why I didn't remember it, you meant in Aus. Never really watched many 6hrs here, they are painfully boring, although the only one I attended in person we were all taking bets if Slights Yam would drop a valve, after all there were 20 of the buggers. Surely it couldn't last.

That's the RZV Jap-domestic model - alloy frame and better front suspension but restricted power, from memory about 86hp down to 69hp (IIRC).
Still beautiful though and I'm sure she can be made to go decently.

Now if I had the money and/or a wife that would let me I would buy it !!!!

Naw, it's a steel framed RZ500. (note the lack of detail around the swingarm pivot point, plus the RZ500 stickers, RZV ones are generally on the side fairings, not the belly pan iirc.

Well as it just so happens, Aprilla are going to be selling there TWO stroke RS125 road bike in the US of A with a Euro3 spec emission and it gets better , there is a hop up kit by Aprilla to get the best from it.
Why not do that to a modern designed 500 or 750, Maybe the manufacturer's remember the problematic V Due - which IMO was really cool, as was riding RZ's and RG's.

problematic V Due
was fixed.....but company went upside down before could release the fix.
Now they are re-invented with new owner who isn't so risky - Tesi2D while a nice bike is not a smoker, and the chance of another VDue outside the ones that are being sold ex-storage is slim.

I'm hoping i win lotto so i can buy an ex-stock vdue

They fitted carbs in the end and flicked them on did they not????

F5 Dave
26th September 2008, 09:42
2 in chch 'parently. The first ones were plagued with badly made engine parts (it is italy after all), the barrels weren't made to spec by erm Moto Minarelli perhaps & the cranks had issues, but it was the fuel injection that was rubbish. They fitted them with carbs & new engine bits & made a limited release track only version in anticipation of a one make race series. None of that really happened, couldn't sell them & meet road emissions. In the end it was all flogged to some chap who bought all the spares & bikes left over. They were still not 'fixed' as in totally reliable it would seem.
