Part way to another "help me choose a 250" forum record

Kia ora all,

My name is John and I was born and bred on the North Shore. I don't have a lot of experience on bikes but have some fond memories of cruising around on quads on my uncles' rural blocks.

I got my learners a few weeks ago and am pretty amped to get onto two wheels but the choice is so huge! Everyone has their two cents but I've narrowed it down to a couple: Honda vtr or hyo comet. The main thing is the $$ and the time to check the bikes out. I've had a couple of KB guys offer to check out bikes with me which I really appreciate.

I'm working full-time at Uni of Auckland and studying there part-time towards a BA(Hons) in Psychology.

In my spare time I like to play a bit of xbox go for runs around the shore listen to music and generally chill-axe. I'm keen for playing almost any sport or watching it on the box if I'm feeling a bit lazy.

I got married almost two year ago now and am loving the married life. Next year I'll be studying full time so the missus will be my sugar mumma to pay the bills.

Sounds great John! I did a degree in psych there as well... err... 6 years ago now... Lived on the North Shore too, and yeah a bike would be great in Akl's traffic.

I'd go with the VTR anytime... test rode the hyobag when i got my first bike and found it didn't have enough go. Unless you're over 6ft, in which case the hyo would come into play for its physical size.

Welcome to KB. I'm in the same boat as you and decided to buy a VTR. I am 5'11" / 78Kgs and it fits me fine. About the only complaint about riding position I have is I find the rear brake pedal a little high making my foot point up a little too much causing strain. This of course could be newbie error on my behalf.

The VTR was generally recommended to me, also by a colleague of mine who was an instructor and also owned one for his wife to learn on.

I've only been on a few rides, but the VTR (and I have nothing to compare to so take with a grain of salt) is very easy to ride and boosts your confidence no end. Very easy to throw from bend to opposing bend.

The vtwin power is great for reving out of a situation, such as wrong gear. It has good power and no troubles climbing one of our steeper Johnsonville streets in low revs.

Best advice is to test ride them both. Hopefully you can find a dealer with both so you can quickly compare seating position and riding style. That's what I did (I was comparing a Yamaha Zeal with the VTR).

Why are there so many bikes for sale in Wellington that I like, but none in Auckland? Do way more people ride in the capital or is this a sign that I need to move down there?

See this is just the million dollar question. Hyo or Honda? Now I know lots of people bag on Hyos but to be honest every Honda out there seems to be ridiculously over priced. Are there any other v-twin 250s (apart from the ninjas)?

I keep leaning towards the Hyo because I found it more comfortable to ride, it seemed bigger (I'm 6'0"), and you get a whole lot more bike for the same price (and to be honest I think it looks better). I've talked to a few mates who have been riding a while and they recommended the gt250. Then again everyone has their opinion on the matter.

Ohh I think getting married is an awesome thing to do! my next one should be a good one! hahahaha, ball and chain is only a state of mind! ... Welly .. seems to be a hell of alot of bikers down here .. I don't really know Im from Hawera and just recently left town .. go hard dude & safe riding :rockon:
