Well, since getting my full i'm on a mission to get a new bike.

I was taking it pretty lax before but now i've hit somewhat of a desperate situation..

My main bike is in the garage for the next 3 weeks while parts come in.

And my 2 spare bikes have both been sold.

So with no transport.. it's nigh impossible to get to work. So I need a bike.

Just so happens that i've found the exact bike I want (Yamaha FZX 750) and in fairly good knick to for a decent price. What an amazing situation, one catch.. it's in Nelson. There's always a catch.

I've started scheming a plan, fly down to Nelson, grab the bike and ride it back up. The flights cheaper then the bloody ferry from Picton which I find bloody ridiculous but you gotta pay what you gotta pay..

I haven't bought the bike yet.. and don't know if I will. But I reckon it'll be one hell of an adventure for a good cause (My first over 250cc bike!).

I have the experiance to do the ride back, sounds cocky I know but i've done alot of long distance riding.

I shall see how it all pans out in the next couple of days..

Dude, check out how much it would cost to get transported.

Maybe $400 bucks from Nelson.

Not going to be much if any dearer than airfare, ferry fare, cost of petrol, motel . Even before you figure in the "what if it breaks down" type costs. Or your time.

Adventure component aside - In monetary terms how does it compare with having one of the professional bike movers get it?

Edit - or what Ix said.

Yeah see, the whole thing is sorta based around time frame..

I have no clue how long it'd take to get the owner to ride it to the transporters, and then how long it'd take to get here.

Preferbly I need it before Friday next week..

Any ideas on that?

What Ixion and Big Dave said. You'll always save money when moving a bike between islands if you use a transport firm (http://www.biketranz.co.nz/).

Friday next week? Shouldn't be a problem. Call Biketranz and ask.

it would most likely be cheaper and faster to have it shipped....crack open the yellow pages or get onto google and have a look at bike shipping.....might have it by the end of the week if you're onto it

I asked..

Bastards.

But yeah, looking at the whole Bike Transport option now (surprised I didn't just think of that myself really...)

Will give a few places a call.

+1

Yep what they all said, get on the phone, will save you money for sure.

If your hell bent on the adventure then get on the plane and play the rest by ear, give youself a couple of days, plenty of cash and make the most of it :scooter:

If you ring around the bike transport companies (can recommend biketranz too we've used them twice), they do runs and if you can tie in with that you'll be smiling.

Goodluck with getting your new purchase. If you do end up riding her home it will be a cool memory to have.

Or - Takaka hill, Motueka Valley, Buller Gorge, Arthur's Pass, Picton is one of the greatest rides on the planet.

Right.. got a quote from Biketranz. $460..

Flight from Auckland to Nelson is $110.

Ferry is $90.

And gas.. surely won't be more then $260.

I think riding it may be the go.. i'd definately have a bit of fun on the way back. No SH1 for me..

Hmm..

We stayed upright, but it was close, and very unfunny at the time. Suggest his time you just take her home and put her to bed. There will be many many many more days to get clever on it.

You won't (safely) get from Auckland to Nelson, back over on the ferry and back to Auckland in a day. On an unknown bike. Factor in a nights accomodation.

and hookers - real bikers always budget for some hookers. I suggest south of the Waikato. A bit rough but you get plenty of kg's to the $.

$20 in a backpackers. Or take a sleeping bag and sleep by your bike?

C'mon Ix, you're losing your sense of adventure

Oh, I wouldn't do it in a day.

And some good news..

I just put my 250 rebel in the mechanics today (was why I thought it'd take 3 weeks, getting the parts in) but they gave me call just 4 hours afterwards and it's sorted..

Apparently they don't sell the parts they use in the workshop. Bit miffed about that but i'm glad it's all sorted then and so quickly too.

So not so much of a rush on geting the bike anymore.. thanks for all the advice regardless!

And if I do go down and get it, i'll definately ride it back and make an adventure of it.

On the plane as hand luggage, have you seen the size of some of those carry on bags;)
