i dont follow who the guitarists are...its the band as a whole that I am interested in...

Currently my fave has to be Greenday, but will have to wait till Friday to see if that is gonna change....cos on Friday I will pick up a copy of Death Magnetic...A new Metallica album has to be the highlight of the week!

For rock with a capital "R" it has to be the guys from Airbourne.

for speed, would have to go to petrucci from dream theatre

for class, would have to be jimmy hendrix

for style (coming a very close first, just beating Jimmy) would have to be Slash

for creativity, would have to be Kurt Cobain

Can I jump in and say ..... no one plays a guitar better than David Gilmour. That guy sends shivers up and down my spine.
Then a very close second woulld have to be Jimmy Page!
Everyone else would rate 3rd place.

For me, Brian May from Queen rates really highly. As the original poster mentioned, Buckethead is pretty cool. I only came across him after he did a few gigs with GnR.

Glenn Tipton and KK Downing from Judas Priest are pretty special, but seem to work better as a team than on their own.

Like someone else said, often it is the band as a whole that is more important than the individuals in it.

Not strictly rock, but fusion is close enough and Led Boots is a cool tune.

With people mentioning Knofler and Clapton looks like not strictly metal and rock - but mine are (in no particular order):

Eddie Van Halen
Vai
Sach
Iommi
Hammett

and of course Hendrix is no 1

Not really a fan of the speed stuff. I remember someone saying words to the effect "why play 100 notes fast when 1 with feeling will do". I think they were talking about Jeff Beck - nuff said!

Just watching a DVD of 3G Live in Tokyo which I picked up in the Warehouse. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and John Petrucci - stunning stuff, particularly Petrucci whom I hadn't seen before. The DVD is worth picking up if you see it.

The one guitarist who hasn't been mentioned here is Rory Gallgher, an Irish phenomen from the 70s-80s. Saw him in Dunedin once and he was mesmerising. The equal of Page and Clapton.

Here he is with Jack Bruce-

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8mqZqhTl4A8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8mqZqhTl4A8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
