Possibly the newbiest question ever?
I am at a complete loss as to how to attach my L plate to my RG. I've been riding it a bit, and yes I can get my restricted in a few months, but I honestly don't want to pay $400 over a missing piece of plastic (well, one not engine related anyway). I just wanna know how all the other beginners did it. So - ideas?

try velcro and gaffer tape, so you don't drill holes any where

MOST cops will be nice enough to let you off if you do get asked where your 'L'oser plate is and you tell em that it must have flown off :whistle:

i just used the velcro buttons that the l-plate came with and stuck it BEHIND and at the bottom of my rego plate.....something about the wind not forcing it off....:rockon:

Usually they bolt to the number plate. At worst, drill a hole in the bottom right/left corner of the plate.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone, I'll be giving it all a try tonight. Cept maybe the drilling haha, more harm than good to be done there in my case. Til it's on I guess I'll keep the 2 stroke-ness to a minimum... not that that's going to be easy mind you :calm:

ive seen ppl use yellow tape and they had made the letter L on the side of the plate

CABLE TIES!!!!!! They seem to hold everything on on drift cars :doh:

But yeah, on the ugly rear fender on my Ninja, iv just got it cable tied underneath the number plate, a few holes drilled in the L plate and viola

I bolted mine onto the reflector thingy on the back of my Spade, just below the number plate cos it's looking like a swiss cheese with the number of holes already in it for WOF/Rego. When I got back from a long ride I noticed a nice styley curve in the L-plate - looks like the plate must have been rubbing on the tyre! Looks, erm, different?!:doh:

How is your number plate attached?

I bolted the L plate through the numberplate bolts on my wife's RG150. No further drilling was necessary.

My registration card is hanging on a bolt underneath the numberplate.. just cut a little hole in the top of the L plate and put it under the bolt.. sits in there nice and tight, no worries.. and I can slide it around and under the number plate when I go on the open road =)

Id say try the cable tie idea. My bike had 2 holes in rear mudguard that fit 2 bolts into nicely.

My L plate keeps breaking. Probably because it's budget quality... I'l going to give the static L plate a go (the fabric one)... I have been told that it "conveniently" sucks up out of view at high speeds due to the tyre sucking it up... wicked stuff there.

That's an L flap then...rather than an L plate. The ones we used were made of a heavy duty polythene rather than brittle plastic. Hard wearing stuff. I've attached the RG with L plate. It was attached via a hole in the number plate not the mud flap. If your number plate should accidentally fall off you can get a shiny new one for not a lot of money.

What do you mean no L plate officer?
It's right here on the plate..oh heck...looks like it must've just broken off!
Look you can still see a small piece of yellow plastic behind this screw.
I'll get that sorted right away sir. Thanks for informing me of my transgression.

Mine was paper, sticky taped.

I put my L plate on just before I took the R exam and wanted a quick easy way so this is how I did it:

Get a 2 L ice cream container or large plastic milk bottle and cut a rectangle larger than your (2 dollar shop) L plate. Poke a hole through the plastic rectangle for a rego plate bolt to fit through. Use double sided sticky tape or clear packing tape (2 dollar shop) to stick on the L plate. Done.

Just put mine on with the numberplat bolts, it obsucres a small part of the top of the rectangle but the L is visable. Better than nothing I supose.

If you need it to hang a little try wire?

On a side note, I have not yet seen any other bike with an L plate on it yet!

As Radar said (I actually just made mine tonight before reading his post).

The dimensions are (minimum) 150mm tall by 110 wide, with the L being minimum 100mm tall by 60mm wide using 20mm thick lettering.

Thanks to my family's icecream habbit, a Kiwi Icecream container lid (which is exactly 150mm square and white) was used.

I used a random orbital sander to scuff up the smooth surface on the underside of the lid (once I trimmed off the excess to make the plate as small as possible), then luckily I had some cheap bright yellow spray paint. A couple of coats, then some cheap black plastic tape stuff and I was done. The bike is second hand and already had mounting holes drilled in the number plate so re-used them. I'd post a picture of my tacky cheapness, but I think we've all seen enough L-plates in our lives.

Well thanks everyone. Due to lack of tools and effort, I've got it going with double sided tape at the moment, and it's survived pretty well so far. Unfortunately, in a way, I managed this several hours before showing it off to my biker mates, to much ridicule. But oh well, I can't really afford the risk at the moment, so I might as well be proud of my newbness. Hah!

after going to many shops & only finding the static fabric ones, went to the AA & got a proper plastic set! a hole was stabbed in the top & then the L plate was bolted to the number plate through an existing hole (opp side to rego). sorted!! :done:

I got an L plate from by BHS course. Bolted it to the bottom of the rego. Legal requirement or not, I'm still at the stage where I feel I should warn everyone I'm a newbie so they are not surprised when I do something stupid... :doh:

LOL, thats exactly why I display mine, in the hope that some impatient arse has a bit of sympathy for me...Tui! :laugh:
