1998 ZXR400 L8 - Racing it (poor bike)

I get bored easy...

Actually racing dirt bikes is a good way to f**k 'em, and the technology was changing so fast back then that you had to change evey 5 minutes to keep up.

Crikey. Another thread on what we've owned.

'80 Kawasaki CSR250LTD: restored it, rode it, sold it.
'87 Suzuki RG250F: thrashed it, crashed it twice, fixed it twice, traded it.
'87 RG400: thrashed it, alternator went dickey, traded it.
'90 GSXR250: bought it new, rode it, thrashed it, traded it
'89 VFR400R: F3 kit, rode it, raced it to within an inch of it's life, traded it
'88 RC30: toured, thrashed, and tentatively raced. killed it.
'87 CBR600: wobbled around, toured, parked it, fixed it up then sold it
'97 TRX850: sorted suspension, touered it, thrashed it. killed it.
'99 GSX600F: gently wafting about.

Owned all of them except the RC, which was nearly paid off when I killed it.

Most fun was the TRX.

Most pride of ownership the RC.

I was quickest on the VFR400 though. First peg scrape and knee down. Also first fried fork oil and boiled brake fluid in one day long track session.

And nearly a Ducati, and very nearly a Yamaha.
Well if we're allowed to put what we've nearly owned then:-

Actually owned:
1967 Suzuki B120
1963 Suzuki T150
1997 Honda Rebel 250
New bike coming soon - watch this space!

And then I dreamed I owned these so I reckon they count
2005 Ducati Monster S4R
2004 MV Agusta Brutale
2004 Triumph Bonneville
2005 Yamaha R6
And finally: A really sexy black one, that was the fastest bike in the world, sounded sooooooooo sweet, and I was the hottest chick in the world for riding it, setting new speed records on a motorbike, and I wore sexy black leathers and had long, gorgeous hair that cascaded down my back when I took my helmet off and ....

Actually owned...
1967 Yamaha YL1 100cc *
1970 Suzuki TC250-II *
1970 Kawasaki H1 500
1972 Kawasaki S2 350 *
1970 Kawasaki H1 500
1973 Ducati GT750 *
1974 Ducati 750SS *
198? Suzuki AX100
198? Honda CB250RS
1987 Yamaha FZR750
1971 Suzuki TS90
1993 Yamaha YZF750SP
* bought new

But ridden, begged, borrowed, used, but not actually stolen , whatever I could get my mitts on over 38 yrs!
Never ridden a cruiser though and tend to stay away from dirt bikes - they hurt - from the TS250 Savage I cartwheeled down the hill on Mt Eden one drunken night in 1971 to the TTR250 I savaged some ribs on in a paddock in Clevedon in 2000!

Hey Honda, you wouldnt know Graham and Matt D out at Waitara would you? Theyre into old Hondas with a vengeance, as well.

hmmm ... mines not a long list at all, but I did travel nearly 200,000 miles on the suzuki !

1953 Jawa 125 - top speed of 55 mph

196?? Arial Arrow 250 (had apparently been used for sand-racing without an air filter, and couldn't go up hills

195? Jawa 250 (borrowed)

195? Jawa 350 (given to me, on condition I went up to Awanui and fetch it off the side of the road - top speed of 60 mph.

1972 ?? Suzuki TR500 (rebuilt at about 120,000 miles, and put into a Yamaha 250 frame)

197? Suzuki 250 (with 350 barrels and never properly sorted carburetors - was lethal).

1980 MotoGuzzi 850 Le Mans (buried under the back of a bus - choice was that or the herd of cows crossing the road - raining, no farmer down the road, and Jersey cows the same colour as the freshly graded clay bank -- aargh!)

1988 Yamaha FZR750 ( stolen, and burnt when he crashed. Police said he couldnt ride for nuts, and he still owes me a lot of money, when the police can find him again - which they dont seem to be trying much to achieve as far as I can see, despite the court orders).

1984 VF1000 Honda (53,000 km since January 2002, and almost a full rebuild).

Wannabe ? ... 1500cc 220bhp VMax that handles!

I think I've done this before but there's something satisfyingly nostalgic about documenting past and present iron.....anyway

1984 RM80 (still remember my first race ever on this)
1982 RM125 (light swith power band, hopeless drum brakes)
1988 CR125 (had some Woodville GP glory on this)
1991 KX125 (did well at Auckland club champs on this)
1990 NSR250 (first road bike - siezed on me while flat out, didn't crash though)
1992 KX250 (getting tired of mx by now)
1992 RGV250 (more 2 stroke road bike maddness. Siezed on me again while flat out - my fault though)
1998 CBR600 (great step up form RGV - finally learnt how to wheelie)
1999 VTR1000 (Wheelie madness...nice sound)
2001 748S (Favourite road bike - great handling, rev the hell out of it wihtout doing stoopid speeds - very satisfying machine)
1999 YZ250 (Back to MX - needed more fitness)
2001 YZ250F (Getting fitter - best MX bike ever - awesome machine; easily embarrassed plenty of 450s/250 2 strokes)
2003 VTR1000 (back to the road...some touring....not happy with heavy slow handling..still a nice engine though)
1991 RGV250 Racebike (great road race learner machine, light, cheap to run so far......)
2005 GSXR600 (to be a race bike one day.....second favourite road bike; actually a race bike masquerading as a road bike...nutter's machine)

Ahh because we owned them' rode them, drooled over them, loved them and when asleep we even dreamed about them....

I have never ahd a bike i didn't love for one reason or another. Also haven't had a bike that didn't cost me a lot of hard work a sweat to get....

Some people get given things and don't really appreciate what they've got.

Knew it,forgot the HONDA CB250G5,real heap of shit, used to run on one cylinder in the wet until it came to a corner when you`d have the throttle wide open to keep the bastard moving and the second one would kick in to try and kill you.Soon as the road straightened it`d go onto one again.Handling was diabolical and unusually for Honda the paint faded completely in the sun,yes even English sun, after a year.Odd because the previous CB was a great little bike.

Owned:
Yamaha RX125 - crashed it three times, last time bent the forks and wheel rim
Suzuki TS125 - mates and I tried to kill it but couldn't, probably still running somewhere
Yamaha RD350 - terrifying bike (frame kinked), wish I had another one in better order
Honda CB360 - great bike, should never have sold it
1966 Puch SR150
Suzuki GT50
Suzuki GT125
1954 Zündapp Bella 154 - Stripped it, got it repainted/chromed/galvanised, reassembled it, then rode it 2-up from Hamilton to Whangarei and back
Honda CB550
Suzuki LS400 - current bike, not running
Suzuki GSX250 - given to me with stuffed engine, replaced engine, now it won't go for more than 2 minutes

Borrowed:
Suzuki GT550 (brother-in-law's) - seriously looked at buying one years later when I bought the LS400
Kawasaki 250cc "Custom" model (friend's)
Suzuki 100cc (friend's)

Ridden:
Lots - various test rides and "cool, gizza go on it mate" situations. The ones that stick out in my memory were:
BMW R100CS
Suzuki "Intruder" 1400

Late starter so:

1990: First bike a 1980 Suzuki GSX250.
Got it while backpacking in America. Full drivers licience, but no bike licience. Looked like a GN250 but with twin pipes. Crash it a few months later in Toronto on the 401. Got in trouble for not have insurance.

1998: 1991 Suzuki GSXR250.
Got for wife to commute into AK. Took over use of bike in 1999 as my student bike. Chashed it, repaired it. Bike bug bit. Serparated from wife, keeped the bike:2thumbsup Traded for next bike.

2002: 1990 Honda VFR750.
Got it using Bank's new grad loan (still paying for it). Dropped it off the back of my ute (see "Veronnica" (http://http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=164958&postcount=21)) Feb last year. I wonder if Frosty has flogged her off yet:spudwhat:

2004: 1990 Honda CBR1000FL ("Roxanne").
Have done well over 15000miles on this baby and many more to come.

Apart from the 1980 GSX250, they have all been excellant bikes and if I had the money I would have kept them all.

Wish List:
Blackbird or Busa
Then after I've shat myself shitless and have got sick of repairing fairrings, I'll got naked (the bike of course:o ).

1986 Honda CBX250 - Great learner machine; 40Kkm in 18 months.

1983? Honda CM250C - Yuk! ex-wife's bike. Crap c.f. the CBX.

1984 Kawasaki GT550 - Hmmm. Boring roadie. Seemed nice enough for a Jap 4.

1992 Yamaha TDM850 - New - 'ken awesome beast but cold. 30Kkm in 13 months, too much of that freezing my nuts off.

1994 Triumph Trophy 900 - New - Magic bike in rolling country, a lot more comfortable than the TDM. 75Kkm in 16 months (can you see a pattern developing here?). Written off due to what can only be described as, "complete cosmetic damage" after a sorta mild crash.

1995 Triumph Trophy 900 - New, current - Almost 1000km per week average for first year, currently 163Kkm and climbing. Too many mods to list.

1994 Triumph Tiger 900 - 20Kkm in 2 years. Shoulda bought one of these instead of the first Trophy but the TDM scared me off. Fantastic "real world" motorcycle. Just as comfy as a Trophy, better around town, better in the rough. Doesn't have the same top-end drive, but gets there much quicker due to torquier tune.

1995 Honda NX650 Dominator - too big and too road-oriented for a novice adventure rider.

2001 Suzuki DR200SE - New - Much better for a novice road/trail machine. OK for adventure rides but not for enduro.

2001 Suzuki DR-Z250 - Current - Much better for enduro. Not a modern performance enduro race bike, but has won its class in the Aussie Safari. Acceptable on-road performance. Second set of wheels for street use.

Wish list:

The Trophy will stay, but have rego suspended after a few more years.
Performance enduro race bike, maybe 200-250 2T.
Proddie racer or bucket more likely than sports 600 roadie.
Husaberg FS450e or Husqvarna SM450 likely for next "nice" road bike.

As unexciting as it may be, the DR-Z250 with a second set of wheels fulfills three roles: commuter, enduro and adventure. A tough combination to beat, at least financially, and may mean I can afford more of the above "wish list" for dedicated rides.

Ay, I've had probably at least 40 bikes , maybe more, but never a 4 cylinder (or a 6). Just seems to much mechanicals for a bike. Single cylinder to 350cc, twin to 650 triple over that. I reckon 250cc is just about the perfect cylinder size.

My favourite bike I've owned has to be the RZ-500.
And I know exactly why, those bikes just have amazing charisma, I was lucky enough to own one of only 20 of the original short pipe models that came into the country. I knew I was buying it by the time I had changed into third gear on my test ride, and I had test ridden a few bikes that day!

wow, my list is going to seem so small compared to some of yours...

Hope fully the next one on the list will look something like this: '98 Yamaha R6 :) (Dreams are free)

My anaemic list:
1980 Yamaha XS 650 (1st bike)
1986 Suzuki GSXR 750
1989 Yamaha FZR 1000
2000 Kawasaki ZX12R (only owned 2 weeks)

I love all four bikes but have very fond memories of the old GSXR.

Do you have a pic of the short pipes ?
Interesting, as I never knew these existed. I thought the lower pipes met at about the same as the high pipes.

But yes, what a beast,...drank fuel like it was going out of fashion, tank-slapped wickedly, and occasionaly fouled plugs around town, but when you got it on the pipe that V4 sounded like nothing else !!!

I have a good pic somewhere, but could not find it sorry.
I did find this crappy one, so it is a photo of a photo sorry...
If you look at the top pipes you will notice they barely stuck out from the tail piece, where as the ones imported later, the top pipes stuck out a fair few inches. Hence my short pipe comment.
A vic uni student bought it of me, we did the deal at the top of the tukas lol, it was'nt you was it????

There was also a very rare RZV aluminium frame one made, but I do not think they bought any into NZ

I hear you on the tank slappers, I fitted a steering dampener within 1 week of buying it!

And oh yes, that beautiful V4 sound, not to mention the associated vibration, it was the total package eh!

Nah, I had mine back in Christchurch in 1993. Mine was a steel frame RZ model. The RZV were apparently quite a bit detuned, despite the trick frame.

Mine had the top pipes sticking out, so I understand how you described it.

They're the sort of machine that has a cult status (like a MACH 111) and will only increase in value, so if you want one, buy it and KEEP IT !!

I'm a bit more sedate in my riding nowdays, so my 'thou keeps me happy.

Yep, RZ500 here too. The RZV alloy framed jobby was restricted... frame from that, and the motor from the RZ would've been bliss.

From your description, mine was the 'short pipe' model also. Although, I did change it to race pipes... that sounds faanntastic!!

Never had any tuning or fouling problems though, but I never skimped on TTS (thankfully could get direct from castrol) or B8HVXs (real cheap from Automotive Supplier NZ, about $9 each iirc instead of B8HVs from Darbis at $26~ each).

You mean the tank slappers weren't a bonus feature??

Posted a list in another thread a while back, but had over 20 odd bikes though a couple of multiple purchases of same model over time.

But it started 26yrs ago with a YZ80 ( raced zone 3, #129 ) then progressed thru the ranks to big jap multis' and italian jobs. Then got nailed on a FJ11, had a break away due to the injury did a mechanics course, worked on bikes.

Got conned into doing organised trail rides (XR500) & regained the itch for the road, got a CBX750 found it a bit bland so ended up with current mount.

Most fun bike ?? the SR500 easy to run, fun to ride around the city, cheap on gas and I still rode her up and down the North Island. At my age though, I need a four to get north now in comfort.

Having a close look at that pic, it is actually one of the original 20 short pipe model RZ500's. It is RARE! My understanding is they bought a few hundred of the long pipe ones in...
How did you get on kick starting it in the snow?

I reckon... there is a KBer just up the road from me with two of these puppies, I have been dropping the hint for a ride... BUT HE'S NOT LISTENING

Would he part with one?
There is a old vic club head banger stalwart by the name of Mike Vash, when he saw mine all those years ago he used to hug the tank, I kid you not!
He finally saved enough to buy one and after a few years it got pinched, I felt so sorry for that guy and I told him I would always keep an eye out for one if it came up for sale?

errr,...I remember that clearly,...I counted them,...about 30 !!!!
"cause it's a short high-mounted kickstart I was getting knackered by the time she started !!
My friend's RG500 took the same though !!
Now,..all of those Gixxers and such were buggered before the buttons were pressed. They all needed battery jumped from the truck there. My mate and I took great delight in that one !!

I do regret selling her. Never mind, in this day and age if I still had the RZ my licence would be a distant memory.....
