Best freight company for mufflers?

Had a rush of blood last Friday and ended up buying some Ducati mufflers on Trademe - by accident. No problem, paid for them, and just need to get them from Albany to Invercargill.

How??!! I've tried to get quotes from DHL, NZ Post, and Mainfreight and they range from $55 to $130. That's more than the pipes cost. May just have to leave it to the seller to arrange and I'll pay whatever it costs but I'd like to get a lower price if possible. Plus I don't want to muck the seller around.

Any suggestions of the best low-cost freight company?

As for buying them by accident, they are off an 888, were selling for about $100, 1 hour to go on auction, so I put a bid in, thinking the existing bidder would probably top it......and the rest is history.

I plan to take the packing out and open them up (just like yours McJim :msn-wink:). Should be good fun http://www.ducatisuite.com/superbikemufflers.html

However there will be a bit more expense because they need extension pipes to the headers made so it seems silly to pay a lot for freight.

Have you thought of Daily Freight? I sent a Bandit muffler from Auckland to, I think it was Gore, and it cost $25.00 or something close to that. Took two days.

Better still remove the stock internals all together and weld in a length of perf tube and pack with the stringy packing. Sounds lots better than gutted stock internals, which in my opinion make the bike too loud.

Get the seller to wrap them individually and just take them into NZpost.

NZ Post will charge on weight and size. You'll be better off talking to some long-haul companies and saying that there is no hurry for them to arrive (cheaper, hopefully...).

Give McDowall Freight a call, the director is a guy called Kent.

Their head office is in Browns (just out of invercargill) he should see you right.

Otherwise, Toll, StraitFreight, Streamline Freight or Now Couriers should see you right.

as guy above said try Now couriers, they`re usually the cheapest, the box wont be that big just being mufflers mainfright and such are really for pallet sized stuff

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone. Firstly I'll try McDowells because I know them and in fact coincidentally am dealing with a guy from their office at the moment.

I'll post back and let you know what happened. The mufflers are just above the maximum size couriers/post handle so they calculate on volume = $$. No sweat, we'll get it sorted, much appreciated for all the suggestions. :2thumbsup:

Thanks for the advice. I intend to make haste slowly and remove part of the internals in stages. Of course in practise it might not be as simple as that. Essentially the mufflers are quiet because the internal pipes do a U-turn and take the gases back to the mid-point where they finally enter the exhaust tube itself.
