View Full Version : Cops that break the law

I am guessing someone has moaned about this before, but has anyone else noticed that cops seem to break the traffic law as much as anyone else?
I have always noticed cops speeding, running orange lights, not indicating, pulling sudden turns (without their lights on) etc.
This has always pissed me off cause there is basically fxck all you can do about it. I guess moaning about it here won't do much good, but I just think that cops should set a better example. And if they have to drive dangerously for their job, I reckon they should have their lights on. Maybe it is just Hamilton cops, not long ago I was cruising back to Hamilton from Cambridge and there was a cop in front of me. I was doing about 109km/h, but this guys was pulling away from me really quickly, he must have been doing at least 120km/h. Another time I was on the same road and a cop went hauling past me in the other lane, I was doing about 100 then so I accelerated up to about 115 to keep up with him, hoping he would pull me up so I could have words with him but he speed up more and I was too scared to go any faster haha.
But anyway, has anyone else noticed cops behaving badly on the road or had bad experiences with cops and their driving? It makes it soo much harder to pay a ticket when you know the same guys that give you the ticket do the same thing you do.

The more people complain the better off you'll be... Nothing may happen at first glance... but if everyone complains at every little thing that cops do wrong on the road... you may find that they become a little more leaneant when they pull you over for not indicating...
The thing is people don't like to complain... because the believe nothing happens... when one person complains probably nothing but when every road user complains and cloggs there telephone boards something may happen...
But there is no point complaining on here about it as most of us will say... at the end of the day they are only human and most cops do a great job...

Be careful speeding up as s/he will still give you a ticket for speeding :Police:. (I was quietly listening to a cop explain how he managed to do this to someone else once). Apart from that I treat them like any other motorist, a careful eye and a wide berth :dodge:. But I think they are the same all around the country. Still they do a good job and I have had my faith restored by only getting a warning ( I was not being too bad:no:) instead of a ticket.

Love the humour mstriumph. Regardless of what the cops do on our roads and whether they set an example or not the bottom line is they do it and get away with it and who is going to do something about it, is what i would like to know?. . We can complain about them all we like but I would hate to live in this world without them and wouldnt like to be doing their job at all with some of the situations they have to attend to in their duty as police officers. I know some of you will be saying well thats what they get paid for and thats the proffession they have choosen to persue but without them this world we live in would be 1 hell of a rat race.

maybe he needed to be speeding but didn't want to scare/intimidate/distract others on the open road coming in the other direction- I think you'll find there's a reason for it, yes they don't indicate sometimes, yes the odd headlight is out etc, but these things probably happened during the course of the day/night, on their shift, it's not their personal vehicle, it's a government vehicle, so if it doen't have a rego- well, it is a fact that it will be paid and the government will get it's money.....and i'm sure the blown lights etc will be sorted as soon as practical.....yes it's not really all that fair that they can get away with it, BUT there's a reason for it.

I'm of two minds about this. How do you know that the cop doing 120 'for no reason' isn't one of those that will just give you the shake of a finger when seeing you do that? They do exist.
A while back, north of Tirau (or Tokoroa), there is endless k/s of double yellows. Here is me in my Commode 4 or 5 back in the queue doing fecking 80k :angry2: stuck for ages. Aha!! Finally. A passing lane. Yep..lead vehicle speeds up...others pass at fuckall ks faster...the lane is getting wasted...I get a clear road so down goes the foot...115...120...130...140...past...pull in and slow down about 100m from merge point. Purple Commode goes past me with a cheery wave. Yep...he was a mufti. No lights. No hassles. *Phew*:sweatdrop
Similar circumstances...quite a few years ago...YT got done - 120. Different part of the country - different cop.
It's the inconsistency that irritates me.

Faults are detected daily and get repaired usually that next morning. These cars are driven 24/7. Things break down. Blown headlights can be OK one moment and gone the next... shit happens. All of the ones I know of who get ticketed for blown headlights knew about the problem days, weeks and even months ago.
No excuses for the failure to indicate though, that is just pure lazy shite driving...
As for no lights or siren, could be the burglars doing a break just around the corner they are on their way to and they don't want to scare em off with the noise of their pending arrival perhaps? Remember the fault suddenly appearing... the light bars crap out occasionally without warning too....
There is a whole lot going on in a patrol car when a job comes in. What are you going to do, how to get there, the best way to approach, where to park, who will do what, who will say what, what are we heading in to, what is going on, who are we looking for, what are we looking for, where are the backup units heading to, just to name a few.... Should we be leading by example? Sure... sometimes fuckups are made. Shit happens. We get speeding tickets / speed camera tickets / driving complaints too you know.....
Don't sweat the minor stuff.... they are trying to make it safe for you and yours....
Complain if you want about the little stuff - that shows the typical support we get out there.....

+1 i got assaulted by a bouncer a couple months back about 10m away from the entrance to the bar while i had my back turned. hadnt been in the bar or anything. cops showed up, didnt want to do anything. went to the station morning after to file an assault charge, cop tried to talk me out of it saying that they probably wouldn't do anything......cops doing their job?? the only cop that did their job that day was my mate's sister who told us to file the charge anyway, gave us a heap of info etc......
id rather take my taxes and give em to a homeless person to spend on alcohol or drugs coz giving it to the govt is even more pointless

I respect the cops for the hard and thankless job that they do, dealing with the scum of NZ (which there is a lot of).
But it doesn't take much for them to drive properly. There is a difference to a cop speeding and a member of the public. Cops are the people who are there to enforce the law, not break it, even if it is a little thing like speeding.
I am not really that worried about it, I just think it's a bit shit considering the millions of dollars the police force pours into anti-speeding ads and then the officers are out there doing the thing the boys upstairs are campaigning against. By the way, to whoever said the cops speedo might be out, their speedos are checked regularly and are certified, otherwise their radar detectors would be inaccurate (because the radar detector factors the patrol car's speed into the equation) so the "speedo is out" excuse won't work.
If I ever get a speeding ticket, I don't complain about it, because I accept that it was my own risk and I was the one breaking the law, so I am not hypocritical to criticise the cops for speeding. Even if I *do* speed, I still pay my tax, therefore I have the right to complain.
Anyone who does not agree that it's bullshit for the cops to break the law carelessly like I see them, is a bloody idiot.
So I suggest anyone who sees a cop car speeding or breaking the law, go to the Police Roadwatch (http://www.police.govt.nz/service/road/roadwatch.html) site and report them. I actually did this for the cop who was speeding and I ended up having a meeting with the commander of the Waikato Highway Patrol haha
Can I clarify I have NO problem with the police, they are a good bunch in general I think who do a risky and hard job (10-12 hours a day for my flatmates), but I want to see professional cops out there that don't drive like a sloppy idiots

Cops who are just driving around don't need to speed in my opinion. If there's something they need to sort out, I am happy for them to speed. Although cops DO get ticketed if they get snapped by a speed camera or whatever. The microwave doesnt rely on any input from the vehicle speedometer - patrol speed is calculated by ground pulse. However, if the speedometer is 'out' and the vehicle is not fitted with microwave there is the issue of the vehicle not being up to WoF standard (green sticker for you!), but only the cop driving would know that.

As far as I'm concerned if cops are in control of the vehicle and don't cause an accident, they can do whatever they damn well like on the road, preferably they can be objective and fair when they see others:niceone: In most other countries cops won't bust another cop for anything that's not serious, then they come down like a ton of bricks. Just the other day I was waiting for my daughter in Lakes Primecare waiting room, watching the traffic going by. I saw a cop in a marked stationwagon with a passenger next to him, go up the road, down the road, into the street I was parked on, then he went straight through a stop sign without stopping. Next thing he walks into Lakes Primecare with a young girl in an Intermediate school uniform. So he was on personal business in a work car, breaking the law. What he did wasn't so much dangerous as there was nothing coming but what sort of example is he setting for the young girl that was with him? When I left I went past his car and he didnt even feed the meter. Anyone else would have a $40 parking fine but cops seem to be exempt even when on personal business.
Another time I was stopped for allegedly doing 90 in a 70 zone but the cop was parked on the opposite side of the road, jumped in his car and did the big hero U turn and nearly took out my mate who was following behind me. He didnt even look to see if anything was coming! When I asked to see his radar thingymebob, I saw mud and grass wedged into his front bumper. What a hero! He sure showed me!
I feel better now I got that off my chest.

Yeah that's the kind of shite that I'm talking about. I must say I think that the police are letting too much riff raff into the force now that they are getting desperate.
But anyway, I once saw a mufti car with a mum and about 4 kids in it, driving around haha I was like what the crap? Who pays for the petrol and maintenance on these things? Hopefully not me!
And to the people who say stop moaning: If nobody ever questioned anything that the government did, we wouldn't be living in a very nice country in my opinion

Takes me back when i was living perth australia, there was a serious crash at kings park involving 2 cops in their car, no other cars involved, turns out they were seeing how far they could jump their car over the speed humps.

Oh and just yesterday I saw a cop do a U turn around a roundabout, talking on a cel phone then fail to indicate a left turn. It's this sort of thing that pisses me off cos I would get done for doing the same thing. These cops should be holier than thou on the roads but they dont give a shit.

We (Pip and I) got pulled up in the Mackenzie coming home last Sunday via Tekapo.
I stopped but still stayed on the road and asked, why he had stopped us?
He told me to pull off the road because he had clocked me on his radar speeding at 116kph!
I pulled off the road and we got off the bike and I told him that I did not believe that I was exceeding 100kph.
The "serious" discussion that followed was quite humorous from both sides at times and he mellowed as it proceeded.
Long story short, the radar did say 116 but following our polite discussion, he took down my particulars in his note book and told me to drive on wishing us a safe journey home.
That guy has gone a hell of a long way towards reminding me that our Police are still just people like us doing a difficult, lonely and dangerous job.
(Dangerous! He was outnumbered two to one by a couple of rampant geriatrics, how dangerous is that!)
Respect restored, "NOT" because he let us off but by the way he conducted himself in his duties.
We continued to enjoy our ride home and felt really grateful that an otherwise happy Fathers day didn't get just a bit spoiled.
Nice to see that Police can still exercise discretion on their own authority.
I thought that was long gone these days, nice to be proven wrong by a country cop at least. :sweatdrop Cheers, John.

How many of you are going to care whether or not they had there lights flashing or what ever as long as they turn up real fast when someone is putting the boot in. They have a prick of a job without us slagging them off.:Playnice:

....i noticed he had a blown break light buld so at a stop street i rolled the window down caught his attention and told him about it in a letting him know voice. All i can say is he didn't like me telling him that and was quiet cheesed off. And i laughed all the way back bout it. ( he was most probally trailing me to pull me up ) :crybaby:
Lay off the "P" - you're paranoid... Wasn't following ya, was going to the donut shop. Pissed off? Pfffttt... wouldn't have known about it, but thanks for letting him know....
