Keep a look out for this van

Awoke this morning to see my fence and my car both smashed. It would appear a vehicle had mounted the footpath and taken out the corner of my fence and then carried on into the front of my commodore then as they floored it to escape they drove straight over my Power and Telecoms boxes.

I didnt hear a thing and called the cops right away. theyve taken photos etc but i managed to find a piece of the offending vehicle and it had parts number on it so have been to see the Toyota people and they confirmed it to be from a 1990 - 1999 Toyota Previa.

So anyone in the Welly region id be interested to know the rego if you happen to see a vehicle similar this one. Its the same color but the real one will have damage to the front and down the left side where it scraped my fence. I also found the toyota emblem from the front and bits of smashed lights so itll have broken lights too.

Can I just clarify...Previas (or as I refer to them - rabbit pooh cars) are NOT vans...they are people movers. Vans are far more useful than people movers..I know I have both a people mover (Ewwdessy) and a van.

Looks and reads as if its a teen whose parents have made them write it out. Love the PS sorry part.

So they are local as expected and I have passed these details onto the police for now, ran the rego through CARFAX site and it comes up as the right model and also unregistered and unwarranted.

And heres the pics: note that the letter box sits on the broken piece of fence in pic 2 and it was found on the far side of the car along with the toyota symbol.

Having made a similar fuckup while young (and dealing with the consequences) i'd contact the person and see what they want to do about it. Wont take long to figure out if they're genuinely sorry and to go down a line of remedy. Contact the cops and let them know the details.

sounds harsh I know, but I don't think you will do the young fella any good by going easy on him. Ah yeah he's going to go sky high, but if he manages to get the tables turned on YOU (unlikely) I think you might find he will make sure he wins.

While back I had a young fulla ride his DR250 into the back of our wagon. A few hundy in damage to get the bumper fixed up. Anyway he was very interested when I offered to keep it under the insurance radar so long as he paid for the damage. In the end he had to get a loan from his dad but he did pay. Nice guy. Sorry from the outset. Came across genuine so I went easy on him. Worked out well for all in the end.

So trust your gut. If the munter really is sorry then consider helping him out. However, if he tries it on let the Police and Insurance co sort it out.

I feel for you, looks like a bit of damage.

My 2c worth, the guy did a runner and has only come and left a note on your door step rather than waiting for you to come home to try to sort it out. I would get everthing repaired properly through your insurance and then the insurance can chase the kid up for repayment.

Guess my question was worded strange - my point being that as soon as i involved the police at the beggining as there was no car around am i now obliged to give the police the details rather than visiting the person and swapping details.

Do i need to wait for police case number or can i contact insurance before i get that? considering i dont have the drivers details at all?
