Hey there.

The 19th Annual Greymouth Street race is all go again for October 26th (labour weekend).

Accomodation

Just a bit of a "Heads up" for those who intend to come and watch. There are a few other major events on in Greymouth over labour weekend this year (reunions, Rugby league club Jubilee). So if you are after accommodation then its probably a good idea to book something asap. Kingsgate hotel are doing a Street race package or contact the Greymouth Isite for accomodation info.

Free Entry

Entry on the day is still Free!! There are a few business within the town area who will Oppose our road closure and shut down the event if we restrict their right to trade by charging a gate fee. All our income from the event is given back to the local clubs and organizations who help set up and run the event and in recent years we have run at a loss. For those keen to help us out financially, you can either buy a program for $5, or throw a gold coin or two in our donation buckets at the enty points. Each year we struggle to pay for the non volunteer labour such as emergency services and permits etc so every little bit helps.

New Stuff

This year The Westland Kart Club in association with Kartsport NZ will be running 2 Demonstration races. if successful it may be included as a permanent fixture open to all national kart racers on our race day program in years to come.
Either way it should be entertaining!!

We are looking at extending the dirt section for the Supermotard, this was a great success last year and makes for great entertainment.

Due to dwindling numbers in Formula 2 we intend (depending on entries) to replace this class with a "Formula Greymouth" format. This is a Class which will be available to all F1,F2 and some of the faster F3 machines. We have done this to give more Track time to the Superbike/Supersport bikes and like the Karts will be Experimental this year.

thats about it, Lets pray for fine weather and a great days racing!!

Oh and dont be fooled by weather reports, last year Jim Hickey and his mates predicted thunder storms, the track was wet for the first race and fine for the rest of the day!! Remember the acuracy rate of weather forecasts for the coast are about 35%

For any other info, contact our race organizer - Debbie, at:

or ask me on this forum.

cheers, steve

Not as entertaining as if we'd been able to run Sidecars like we asked about a few years ago, we even had teams from the north who would have come down and made up decent numbers on the grid

Yeah, that was a bit of a shame. We pushed for sidecars 2 years ago and MNZ even sent an official down to look at our track and decided that because of the way the sidecars react when the passenger falls off that it could fire the bike into the crowd. No different to a two wheeler i guess but in our game MNZ makes the call. The Karts will run under their own stewards and permit as MNZ is not their governing body. - There was a lot more too it but thats another debate for another time and thread.

cheers, steve

What is tonyb on about? I am one of the karters lucky enough to be involved in this event. Since karts must have a motorcycle engine or one derived from a motorcycle engine what is the difference between us and a bike? We can't run glycol in radiators either, the only oil to spread is gearbox, just like the bikes but only 2 inches off the ground as well, and considering my engine is right in front of my back wheel I think I'll feel it first.
Anyway, looking forward to a great day out, thanks for the invitation.
