Living in a foreign place for a while - it kind of sneaks up on you how much you adjust to the culture.

I'm kind of half metric - but speed I still do in mph - although this morning I forgot how quick an Mph actually is.

I've been rebuilding my old race bike (its an old cibby f2). Finally got it to the stage where I could take it up the street for a quick test run to see if i'd bolted all the bits on correctly (i've tested each bit by itself before).

So I went up the road in 2nd gear a few times and it all seemed to be hanging together. Then dropped down into 1st (it idles at 5k) and gave some pressure to the throttle.

Was off down the street in a flash but glancing down at the speedo (i still have attached) I noticed that it was stuck on 90km/h when the bike started to shudder from the rev limiter (its using a stock black box at the moment).

Bugger thinks I - something wrong here. Perhaps I have the gearing wrong because it should be more than that according to my setup calculations.

Got back to the garage and put the bike away - while checking stuff to see if anything had gone wrong - discovered that I had my old UK speedo on (I thought I'd aquired a new one at some stage). The 90 was in Mph.

So happy that 1st gear is as I set it up to be. I'd just forgotten what Miles per Hour feels like to ride - had found my self used to those high numbered kilopoofters :)

Yer wrong, if you had a Kilopoofter speedo you would have been going faster, like 144kph and not a slow 90mph. :Pokey:

I know that one mate. Unfortunately the cop that pulled me over during my first week here didn't buy it. Neither did the senior sergeant who assessed my plea of ignorance/stupidity. "We don't do those kind of speeds here fella", he said. Yeah righteo ociffer I thought . "..and I’m a stunt double for Ron Jeremy don’t ya know, and may I say how fetching your 70's retro disco moustache is." Oh how the mind boggles with witty remarks at the time, but you're too straight to say it to their face.

I talked to someone recently who was pulled up for doing 60-summat in a 50km/h zone on his '83 Norton. The cop said, "Any reason why you were travelling at this speed?"
He thought for a minute, and said (just as a futile, last-hope attempt), "Ummm... I forgot my speedo was in MPH!"
Cop leaned over, looked at the speedo, and said, "Yeah, righto. Fair enough. Just don't do it again!" :shit:

I've got a MPH speedo on the VifFerraRi, which has MPH around the outside, and piddly little km/h markings on the inside. Which aren't illuminated at nightime.:eek5:

Makes it a bit hard to concentrate on travelling at the right speed. <_<
So what I do is sit at less than 65 mph on the open road, and don't worry too much about my speed around town, as I'm too busy watching out for eedjits, and my "seat-of-the-pants" estimation is usually about right anyway.

I'm not about to try the "I forgot it was MPH" defence, as I don't reckon it would be a particularly reliable one, unless it happened to throw a policeman a little off guard. Which I doubt it would.
