View Full Version : Really sore throat anyone?

Suffering from the usual assortment of nasty symptoms of colds/flu etc at the moment? My mum reminded me of a really good reliever for sore throats just this morning. (Daughter's throat so sore she could hardly swallow - rang good old mum for advice and this is it):
Warm the juice from one lemon, gradually stir in as much sugar as you can till it gets so thick you can hardly stir any more. Take as needed. I warmed the lemon juice in a small dish over the top of a small pot of water on the stove.

Within a short space of time her throat, while still having a slight niggle in the back, was considerably better. She had gone from not being able to hardly swallow at all to being relatively comfortable. I used two lemons and it did take quite a bit of sugar, then only gave her a few teaspoons of the thick syrup. Left the rest in the container over the pot on the stove for later. As it cools it becomes really thick and granulated but I assume you can heat it again (like honey) to liquify it for further doses.

My old Scottish neighbour also used to swear by this remedy:
Cut the top off an onion and scoop the centre out. Pack firmly with brown sugar and then drink the syrup which is formed from the sugar and onion juice. Haven't tried that one for years but seem to recall it working well for the kids when they were little. (Think that might have been for persistent cough).

Personally I find the assortment of sore throat remedies on the market so foul tasting (strepsils included) that i'd almost rather suffer from the sore throat than the taste of what soothes it, but the lemon syrup goop mentioned above is really nice (all that sugar......mmmmmmmmm).

Hope it might be of help to others out there.

Sore throat.
Fill the screw cap from a vinegar bottle with vinegar (I use the clear Malt vinegar).
Scull the capfull.

Done.

(This kills all the bacteria living in the throat).

I wish you had posted this a week or so ago!! Being a teacher means I get all the bugs the children bring to school!

I hate onions, so wont try that, but the lemon thing sounds like a good one. I will keep that in mind for the next time I am sick (shouldn't be too far away)

We have a similar recipe.

Use the juice of a lemon, a couple of teaspoons of honey or sugar (I use Splenda as I'm type I diabetic), and a teaspoon of grated ginger.

Magic.

Are you serious? Does this really work? Sounds pretty vile.

Most amazing overnight cure for a cold I have ever taken is not suitable for children sadly.

I had done the day of sneezes, watery eyes, sore throat. Next day was a bit better in as much as not so many sneezes, but snot for Africa (sorry) Blow you nose once, blow it 3,000 times kind of snot.

Had made a commitment to go away that weekend with my Mommy for a Mom/daughter weekend just before I got married. Met this older man, who obviously fancied my Mother  He made me drink 3 fingers of neat whiskey, followed by another, followed by another, told me it was the cold cure to end all colds. Tasted foul! (apologies to the whiskey lovers on here).'

Guess he wanted to get me pissed, so he could spend time with my Mom. He lucked out both ways, I got really dopey (I was sick remember) and decided to hit the sack, Mom came with me (she recognised a creep) and we went to bed.

Woke up in the morning clear as a bell! But nothing left of my cold misery at all!

Yes.
It only works on the throat (not the nose or other places). The original "tale" says to mix it with honey to aid the taste.

HTFU and just knock back a capful. Just don't over do it!

I usually do the gargle warm salt water one, only it doesn't last very long. Does the vinegar thing last a while?

Yup. A few hours or until the bacteria get brave enough to come out of hiding!:woohoo:

Ah all these old remedies bring back memories for me!

The cider vinegar and honey thing is an old tonic for all kinds of ailments. My grandmother used to swig it every day. Sadly she died at Christmas at the too-young age of 103 so it can't have helped her much after all. :(

Garlic is also good. For best results combine it with manuka honey.

A similar one to the lemon remedy is to make lemon barley drink and have it in warm water. Both soothing and delicious!

I'm suffering from tonsillitis at the moment so these are all good reminders for me.
