Small / Light / cheap / cheap running performance bike to throw around...

What should I look at? some sort of 250cc's? 2 stroke / 4 stroke?

something like this? Trademe (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Sports-tourer/auction-21036654.htm)

Also... a question for people who races... what sort of small 150cc / 250cc bikes / class is there? and what sort of $$$ on going / per session, do you have to / need to spend to stay with the pack?

Hard to relax on on a longish trip. Most don't like steady throttle settings. Would be ok if pistons/rings are replaced when they should be. but for a track bike it would be great. I just like a bike which is a little more user friendly on the road. Just my opinion feel free to disagree.

Hey Zapf,

What are you wanting? A race bike, or a road bike? I say race bike!!! Go for a 400 four stroke or a 250 Two Stroke,

To race, you need a club membership (AMCC for you) and a MNZ licence.... Race days are usually $80. Ofcourse add, tyres (which last a few race days on a small bike) fuel, oil, brake pads etc, etc...

That NSR would be a good race bike, and dont bother with a small road bike, your SV is mint for that...

Although.... you could race the SV :shifty:

I used to own a 2 stroke 1981 RD250LC. Now when totally snotting it at full speed I could go from New Plymouth to Stratford (not sure how many KMs but not that many) on $20 petrol. Now remember that I'm talking 15 years ago and $20 petrol was alot cheaper back then :argh:

that's 42kms, on $20. lets say gas was $0.90 a litre (it was about that from memory) that's 22 litres, or 1.9km/litre, or 19km per 10 litres, or in old school, about 7 1/2 miles per gallon. And you thought that was good???????????????

if you want an awesome round town screamer, I reckon a motarded (is that a word?) vor/ktm/yamaha/honda 250 would be the way to go

Hahah.. yes I can race my SV. But I would HATE to crash it...

I am just not sure about running cost for 2 Stroke. E.g rebuilds... (how often?) other maintanance?

Someone suggested I look at a GSXR400, says they were the sort of bikes they use to race in F3..

How do I tell if its a good NSR250 or not? :P

Huh? Why? I had an RZ350 and the rev counter was my best friend, no point over revving the thing ? Also on my NS400R, the last thing I would want was no rev counter.....

It really depends where your head is with a bike. Given ya wanna track day bike and a road bike -I'd stick with ya current bike.
the money you would spend on a cheap bike Id spend on a set of decent shocks and a bit of a power boost. -then trhow on som crash bungs and race glass
You have pprobably the perfect bike to learn to go fast on in your hands right now.
-either that or swap bikes with me --Ill have the sv you can have the zxr400

thanks.... :) I might just do that.. since I bought a full system for it last month... is there restrictions on mods for the track? and what is difference between race glass and normal fairing? tkns

Ummmm race glass is made up of fibreglass so is lighter... but more brittle than your standard plastic fairing. Because the fibre glass can be molded into just about anything you can have customised fairings to improve drag/wind resistance etc etc etc.

Or that's what i think anyway but they are heaps lighter
