View Full Version : The Nod

Ok so do bikers do this? when we used to drive the pick up trucks we used to nod or flash lights, when I was in the Old school VDub gang we used to nod, flash or even stop in the middle of the road to look at each others Dubs.
but.... do bikers nod or is this my imagination and something to do with bumps in the road. I thought I saw two people do it but then when I did it to two people they just blankly looked at me....
I don't mind the nod but I don't want to look like a nob, if this isn't done back :(

You can tell that someone has a blank look on their face while they have a helmet on and are moving?
Ride faster. The movement of air above 140 makes your helmet move more making the 'nod' more pronounced at speed.

yes, bikers wave to each other, nodding is also common practice. just don't waste your time waving to a postie

Most bikers either nod or wave. I do either.... depends where I am, traffic, coditions ect....
its just a sign to say hi to fellow riders.
If they dont nod or wave back. Who gives a rat ass. it shows that they are a prat or mabe they are worried about letting go of the handle.
If I get a wave back or a nod I allways feel much better.
BUT if you see them waving with both arms and nodding at the same time while riding.... Its a good sign they have a bee in their helmet:buggerd:

I have one of those little toy dogs with a spring-loaded head.
There is a car accessory shop in the bottom of town that sells them.
Just mount that on the front of your bike and all the nodding that you ever need is proveded without any effort!

short answer:
nod/wave - sign of respect.
You may not get 100% response tho in heavy traffic or motorway.
Scooters dont know about the wave/nod.

In my experience
Sportbike riders - wave to other sportbikes
Harley riders - never wave to a sportbike rider ( I have never owned or ridden a Harley so dont know if they wave to each other
Small bike riders - nod, they dont have to worry about a nod ripping their helmet off
Scooter riders - Low on the totem pole, I think they lift their heads up from the "hanging head in shame" position which can be mistaken for a nod

You know - I was coming into work this morning and thought to myself - My post probably came across a lot ruder that it was intended (There should have been a smiley face there).
Then when I got in a re-read the post - I thought a smiley face wouldn't have made much difference - it comes across as a wanker.
So - James (if that's is your real name <_<) you make a fair point and its noted.

To the orginator of this thread...don't mind the crowds here, they are all pretty nice usually.
Thing is, everytime someone new comes up on KB, it seems the first thing they are wondering about is whether anyone else waves in the warm fuzzy spirit of Bikehood...so after a while, the oldies take the piss! :D

Under 5 seconds? And you think that's good? My nana can get herself up to 100 in less time than that, and she's been dead a decade. Hell, it's so slow that even Porsches and Ferarri's would be able to keep up.

Like she said, don't take the gentle ribbing as being too serious. The trolls are well outweighed by the really great people on here who form the voice of reason. Some, (like 007XX, MOM, Number One) also add a serious amount of good looks and brains - while others make you realise that the countries average IQ is so low because they're here (Carter... err, Carter. And, umm, Carter).
Peace to the world.

Harley riders - never wave to a sportbike rider
Bah! Why bother. If a Harley rider ever waved at a sprotbike a thread would be started on KB about how amazing that some Harley rider actually waved ......:zzzz:
As for Harley riders and their look-a-like counterparts the reason they wont wave back is if they remove a hand from the bars they will inevitably lose control and crash in a low speed wobble come tankslapper.
So this is way Sprotbike riders wave is it ......so they can cwash

So close - a small uninsulting wave is fine in most circumstances, but not if he's on a honda. Thats the KB equlivant of tapping your foot while in a public loo*

Ok between yesterday and today I think I figured it out.
it's like a respect thing, like moving down the hall and the weakess male gives way first.
if you see a nice bike but you think yours is better you look at them and wait for them to nod or wave, now if you respect there bike you may nod back
if you think your bike is worse you nod and if they thinkyou are acceptable they will nod back!
funny though all the hondas were waving like mad :)
now if you both do not nod then well.... you probably just didn't see each other.
