fucked up - indeed - however note that they have been laughed out already and told that they don't have a snowballs hope in hell of getting it.
And BEFORE our more literal readers complain - I'm not suggesting getting a snowball and taking it to hell just to see if it survives.

Yeah, exactly. I want it to go ahead, in full public glare, and ideally with them winning some settlement in the $1-5M range i.e. just enough so people shit their pants but without actually making any difference to the tax payer. It's exactly what the treaty industry needs - a problem.

But it's ok they won't likely get any money anyway because remember that not all treaty claims are about the money and the land  Sometimes apparently they are just about drawing attention to the injustices that have been perpetrated against them in the past....Isn't it nice to see these lovely boys chewing up tax payer dollars by drawing our attention to how gangs apparently only exist because of colonisation through the utilisation of this system. TOSSERS!
FTR - I am not against all treaty claims or settlements but these guys are just cocks and not the kind I like either!

Surely if we are going to shoulder the blame for Maori issues then that would apply to all Maori?
Personally I think they should consider the fact their lives are much better due to colonisation but that's not the way the grievance system is set up. Instead they will eat shit, sleep all day, then blame an "inadequate" health system catering to the white man, as if that "imagining" is some how responsible for their lifestyle choices which gives em a higher rate of diabetes.

Warning - excess PC read follows.

The claims aren't for money. More likely for apologies. So I suppose gang victims including members can ask for a share of the apology for having the odds stacked through anti Maori policy harrassment and land stripping that they'd grow up rootless psychopath type abusers or to be their victims by birthright.
But reading the following article I wonder how this works for gang women. What if some are Maori and some not.
Does the apology only go to the brown wives and girlfriends or kids who got abused or landed on the streets at risk from one and all... or only to the wives and girlfriends of the brown abusers (not white abusers within gangs) but only if the wives and girlfriends be just brown. It's confusing to me because some gangs are mixed bags and as such form "family groups".
And why... in the event that it is finally established by legal argument that colonisation screwed up a population (or segment)... contributing to gang lifestyles being uptaken... should an apology which would seem to be sought on grounds of the treaty principles "right to equal opportunity" being breached, not also go out to random victims of gangs who aren't members (whether brown or any other rainbow shade). After all non Maori did co-sign the Treaty, and the random victims are surely a larger sized class of people than the 60,000 odd gang members and associates.
Yes Patrick I think all those ill affected by gang antics should also get a cut of the acknowledgement in this claim. Anything else might be racist.
Gang women lodge Treaty claim
4:00AM Friday Sep 19, 2008 By Yvonne Tahana
No legal basis for gang's Treaty claim - Cullen
A Treaty of Waitangi claim on behalf of all gang women has been lodged by Aroha Trust, a group who were caught up in the gang scene in the 1970s. It follows on from a Black Power claim lodged with the Waitangi Tribunal before the September 1 deadline for historical claims which blames colonisation for the existence of gangs.
Trust member Pip Desmond, who is writing a book about its members, said the women's claim was similar and would look at Crown failures that had led to "cultural alienation, economic despair, impoverishment and abuse of Maori women and their whanau in gang environments".
Like the Black Power claim, it is not seeking any compensation. Instead, it views the process as a "truth and reconciliation" forum. The Wellington-based trust was set up under Sir Robert Muldoon for women between the ages of 15 and 22. Over three years in the late 1970s, 30 took part in government-supported work schemes.
Most of the women had been in welfare homes or were street kids, had been abused, were children of parents who had moved to the city and so were dislocated from their roots, Ms Desmond said.
"The point of it is everyone needs to have a voice so that they can heal."
Commentators such as Black Power life member Denis O'Reilly credit the group with challenging attitudes towards gang rape - a gutsy and courageous stand in the 1970s. He said what these claims pointed to was probably the beginning of the end for gangs - or at least for Black Power.
Many members were getting older and saw how "pointless" being in a gang for criminal reasons was. Many owned their past mistakes but wanted "Crown recognition" that gangs didn't spring out of nowhere, they were a result of social policies and colonisation, Mr O'Reilly said.
"People are already identifying their own failures. You start saying, 'Well, I f***** up here, I committed that crime or whatever but if I'm planning a future for my kids sorting out the systemic issues is one of the problems'."
But gang claims have drawn derision from MPs such as Labour Cabinet minister Shane Jones. "Treaty claims belong with the iwi, and gang involvement in the claims will find no public sympathy. "The only claim they should be making is that they have found more tinnie houses, more production houses for this dreadful drug P. "Only when I see and hear of them closing those down in their own networks will they enjoy a sliver of sympathy from me."
Hmm. If O'Reilly is for real the "truth and reconciliation" should be open to all affected by gangs through this process. The women say they are owning their past mistakes. Well if they victimised any non gang people then shouldn't truth and reconciliation include inviting them to be a party to this claim? Or would the link back to ill effects of colonisation be too tenuos for third parties, legally speaking.
