Possible race bike for the Quasi

Its a CBR400 R 1989 model with 53km on the clock, any one else one, is it reliable fast enough etc etc etc, should be good for F3 class ?
Or would a ZXR400 be better ?
I have the bug so keen on your thoughts

Last time I was racing at Taupo there were 2 or 3 CBR400s getting into the top 20 no problems - I think they would be fine. ZXRs seem to be more popular though - but any of those 400s are competitive enough for F3 in the right hands....that Bolwell fulla kicks arse on them (well used too between him and Fitzgerald's SV) and Jason Hulme is wicked quick on his NC30. If it's '89 you could run it in pre-89 class too i think (or does it have to be '88 and earlier?)

With 53k it might be due for a top end overhaul - at least check out the compression and valves/chains/belts etc - you'll be revving the tits off it racing!

I choose a 2 stroke for my first F3 race bike 'cause I didn't want to have to bother with 16 midget sized valves etc.....but then two strokes have their own challenges too....either way a 15 year old machine being raced means you'll be getting your hands dirty but that's part of the fun. Less weight with the 2 strokes make 'em easy to handle but also they have less torque by a significant margin than a 400...Hoon would have a good opinion on 2 vs 4 having raced both......anyway as long as you're out there with something as your riding will be 98% of the equation for the first season or so, not the bike!

Well, its cheap, and thats the best thing!!! If you pay fuck all for it and throw it away then who cares???

CBR400's have a shocking rear shock, but have a ride of it and see what you think, ofcourse get it checked as Guy said....

Looks like a good bike though... Then, take the electrics off, put some sticky tyres on, and some SBS brake pads, and have a blast!!! Then look at braided lines, setting up suspension minutely, race fairings etc....

Go have a ride see iff you like...

Being a Honda it is probably super reliable and bullet proof. Also it will be eligible for the pre-89 jnr class as well so you'll be able to get 2 lots of races each meet. Glen Williams told me he use to race a CBR400 many years ago so they are competitive. Most F3 bikes are near stock anyway so as long as it is putting out around 60bhp and does 220kph top speed it will be capable of top 5 finishes in the right hands.

Even if you test ride it and it doesn't (which is highly likely), all it may need is a freshen up i.e. rings or just a valve grind if you are lucky.

The only reason I moved on from my RGV250 was because mine was lacking top end (only did 180-190kph) and this was holding me back. Two-strokes have better cornering/brakes and having that extra margin of error is great for learning but the 4-strokes have better mid-range & accel.

I agree with the previous posts. Spend as little as possible and get ya ass out on the track. I promise ya even if its a bit down on power etc It will still be better than you are for the first couple of meetings.
I dissagree with the other guys here only because I made the mistake of pouring truck loads of money at my bike when in reality It was the loose nut on top that needed sorting out.
My suggestion to ya would be -get a bike, bung tyres on it and finish this season. Sit back and decide where you're going afterwards.
Ya might think F2 is you.
Ohhh and theres a really quick ZXR400 gonna be up for sale end of season.
