last week my prescription glasses got run over.... paid $319 for them 2 years ago
today I went to get a quote to get them replaced... as the frames are fucked as well as the lenses, I'm looking at $375

go to insurance compay... (INSERT THREE LETTER COMPANY NAME HERE... begins with A and ends with I)
"if you pay $100 excess, we will give you $200, due to depreciation"

now, my understanding of depreciation is that it's due to changes in the market and resale values etc...

My FUCKING Glasses have NO RESALE VALUE as they were CUSTOM-MADE for me!!!!
how the fuck can they depreciate??????
what do I do now??? I'm on my last set of contact lenses (monthly ones that are 6 weeks old) and I need to drive!!!!its my fuckin job!!!

can anyone recommend a REAL insurance company????

(even tho it's too late for this claim, I'm gunna change incase anything happens to my belongings... bike is insured elsewhere as A*I dont like Ducs)

Try ACC.

But yes, AMI are the biggest rip off merchants in the country.

If you look at their policies, they charge you a premium based on a fixed value, but will only pay out at market value sometime later.

So at the end of the day you are paying for a service that you wont receive.

I chased them up on it some time back, but they cant and wont do fixed sum insurance. Thats where you insure an item for a value (eg 5k) and if it gets nicked or damaged they pay you 5k for it.

what about replacement insurance? this cant reall take into account depreciation can it? as then it wouldn't be replacement!
Just got a watch worth a bit and want to be sure of its cover.

Got replacement insurance through Tower. It works (2 prs of glasses in 6 weeks!), but it costs more.

well it looks like I'm going to cancel the claim, fork out, and then look for another insurance company!

Just looked at that... no excess either!!! will ring tower tomorrow...
its just contents as I'm renting, but as I have shite loads of electricals in the lounge alone, I'm gunna tell A*I to shove it and find someone who will actually pay/replace stuff

Hmmm...I guess I will be the stickler, I am with A*I and I find them fantastic. They were super duper quick to deal with my insurance claim. In a matter of days they had an answer, they offered to wreck the bike and give me replacement - excess value where they would cut a chq that day, or repair the bike - the exhaust and not charge me the $900 excess. My premiums do not go up either because I am already on the highest amount.

Go A*I :headbang:

hope no-one has to put up with this crap, specially if it was a bike!

Yeah, I don't know what they are like for other insurance items as I have my contents and liability with Westpac.

And life with 3 other companies. Gees, I pay too much for insurance.

If you need a deal on replacement eyewear, send me a PM and I'll give you details for my brother Andrew. He will take extraordinary good care of you. Offices in the city and Lower Hutt (sorry, Kupe City...).

Having been on the customer end with Andrew, I can definitely recommend him.

Great personality, worked out a prescription that works really well for me (absolutely no headaches at all while getting used to the glasses, unlike a lot of other glasses) and he also gave my wife a free consultation at the time as well.

As an aside, we are with Vero, who have been absolutely fantastic with claims. They said get what you want and pay the excess to the optometrist and we will pay them directly. They paid $550 and my excess was $100.

Dude...this is the definition of depreciation:

A decrease or loss in value, as because of age, wear, or market conditions.
It's easier if you think of it in terms of selling something second hand...you'll almost never get what you originally paid for the item.

Consider a Ducati 600ss...buy one brand new and it'll run you around $15k (that's a guess)...but if you buy one second hand that'll a couple of year old, even if it's in factory condition, you'll pay less for it.

Now, with your insurance policy...if insurance paid out on the new replacement value, the premiums would be far greater. Hence, you pay for the cover that you get.

Disclaimer...I'm not an insurance expert...so the above could be pure fiction.

I'm with AMI for bikes, they took a bit of convincing (a visit to the manager with a well-reasoned case) but htey have insured me for very reasonable premiums and from first-hand stories i hear, they pay out reasonably promptly and with little hassle.

Have you been in and explained this to the manager? When you get a no from the lady at the desk, ask politely to speak to the manager. Then tell him what your case is, and you ought to get paid out....

wasnt actually me... was movin the boss on that weekend and use my glasses at night as my contacts get sore... they were in the dash of the van and after he had the van they had fallen to the floor... (he drives like a dick, eh Gman?? ) he came around to visit, opened door, glasses hit the ground and he drove over them when he left.... (Gman is not the boss, just knows him well) so the next day I'm looking for my eyes and there they were, squashed in the driveway!

How the hell did you manage to run over your glasses? :Playnice: :
I ran over my Bolle sunglasses once. Put them in my lap while I put my helmet on, then rode out of the gargre at work. Go to the entrance, though: "Bloody hell! It's so bright! Uh... where's me sunnies?!?" Looked down, didn't see them, so I rode back to where the bike ahd been parked. Somehwere along the way, they fell down and went under the wheel. Straightened them out, and apart froma few deep scratches, they've been in use for 3 years or so since then, no problems. However, when I bought another pair (so I had some non-muntered ones for 'good'), I was forbidden to ever wear them on my bike.

By the way, Blakamin - we made a claim for glasses for my son, who smashed his when/after he broke the Subaru. State didn't depreciate them, but we did lose our No Claims rebate; worked out costing us a total of $189 for two years. Cheaper than the $500 to replace the specs.

loss in value, not loss in resale value.
Then the loss in value should be relate to the rate of change in the owners eyesight. Say, 30% over 10 to 15 years.
