Hi there

I tour with Cordura jacket and leather pants.

Add overtrou when it starts to get wet. Cordura jacket is great as it's warm and water resistant until it really pisses down (for over an hour) then its time to add another water proof layer.

As you know, leather soaks up water real quick and stays wet for ages so your top half should (IMHO) be Cordura if you cant be arsed stopping and putting on your wets if it starts to rain. Warmer as well.

I just have a full wet weather suit for really bad conditions along with some gortex lightweight overpants that i have on the bike all the time.

It rains more in the North Island I reckon.

Have a great trip... its the best place in the world.:niceone:

Ive said it before... and I'll say it again: Alpinestars Goretex jacket and pants. Keeps you warm and dry - no way I'd even look at any other gear for wet weather riding :niceone:

Wear your leathers with wet weather gear when needed.Fuck the other cordura shit. As i have said before "the day they let you race wearing cordura is the day i will wear it". You got your leather for protection :niceone:so wear it:headbang:

Leathers all the time and when it rains a bright orange set of thick plastic rain gear. Looks like shit but works well.
Orange so the fuckers in the cages MIGHT see me through the fogged up rear window

The weather is rapidly getting better down here.
I have a set full set of tecknic brand cordura hell winter suit but can only use it for the coldest of trips, say going to the brass monkey.
I would say leathers and a fold up water proof over suit is perfect for next month. My oversuit is a dryrider single layer one. Its about 5 years old and so far its been fine.
If you go via the west coast expect rain, and the passes might still freeze at night. Be a bit flexable and plan your trip around the weather.

As long as you have wet gear easily accessible, leather gear is/should be ok. Watch the weather forecasts on the tv/papers. But expect rain anyway. If you hit it... you wont be supprised... I would suggest an extra few pairs of gloves though...

The Warehouse has very cheap water shielding pants (and jackets), that fold up into a little pocket - I keep the pants under my seat always...

Yep that's all I use over top of my leathers when it rains. I have full set of cordura, but I just feel safer with my leathers and cheap rain jacket and pants from Te Warewhare. They haven't leaked jet, they don't however breathe either!

I find my Teknic Chicane, or Sprint jackets are good in the rain, and cool enough in the heat. I think my cheap old trousers are Orina, which keep me dry.

I wear my Quasi Moto leather jacket if I know it's going to be fine, but otherwise I'm happy enough in my synthetic gear. It held up surprising well in my last road/body interface.

i tend to tour in a leather jacket, so i have a bright yellow rain coat. for around town/short trips, i have rjays jacket and pants. the pants were worn through a hail storm last year at 100k and didnt let a single drop through. i wear them when touring as well.

my gloves however are shite, and my hands are often warmer if im wearing fingerless gloves if its raining. my full gloves stay cold, and my fingers end up going numb and stiff.

I have leathers and a one piece Revit oversuit.

Used it on my last SI trip down for the brass monkey. Kept me bone dry, and also did a great job of keeping me warm. Even wore it when it wasn't raining for cutting the wind chill out.

Cordura Jacket with old yachting overtrou... (Musto). Bottoms are perfect as they are designed to be pulled over sailing boots..<_<

I recently got a pair of rain-off over gloves: http://www.rain-off.com/prdt_dsptn.htm
They really do work as advertised - keeps the rain off my gloves, and the wind (keeping my hands warmer), and the grip is really good too.

My leathers are my wet weather gear. For light rain, nothing else is needed, and my leathers are good for up to three hours in a west coast downpour.

If I expect to be more than three hours in heavy rain, then the cheap Warehouse rainproofs over the top are good.

Leathers with "Rainbird" jacket and trou to go over the top in the rain. Very light and completely waterproof. Got them from Para, but they might not be available any more.....

I've found that the south Island can throw up some real surprises. Have done the Burt Munro twice now and have found to be riding in torrential downpoor in areas like the Catlins and the West Coast on the way back.

I use Tecknic gear and this is very good gear. But if you are travelling for a few days you want to be able to stay dry as much as possible betwen stops. I know the gear dries almost overnite if staying in a motel.

I used the onepiece Spool suit and it keeps you very dry. Its a bit of a struggle to get it on but hey who cares:doh:

It stows nicely and dries fast. Paid about $120 here in Wellington for it.

Good luck with your decision.

Eric

Work replaced all our wet weather gear as it wasn't flame retarded so kept the old kit - bloody great - doesn't get any cheaper either.
